700 cases in Germany and will reach 1000 tomm. How come there is no impact at all?

There were some surveys saying that people in Germany don't really fear the virus that much, which is a bit surprising to me too... The only thing that changed seem to be some panic buyings.

Maybe it is because many people trust the government. Especially the health ministers image greatly improved since the beginning of the spreading virus.

I think there was very little "panic" or fear anyway ... even if the papers headline every day with pictures of people in ABC suits, the population seems much more relaxed 😀 - as long as cinemas stay open, there won't be much impact. The question is IF they stay open; here in Austria some public events (fairs, sports events) have been cancelled and some schools closed; when that happens to  cinemas THEN we'll have the impact.

Read more about this and holy shit, Germany is handling this very well. Zero deaths with almost 800 cases now is amazing. Guess having an incredibly well-funded healthcare system helps.

It also helps that Germany and Austria came pretty late in the chain so the health system was already prepared (different from Italy where the virus obviously had some weeks to spread before the danger became public)

Two new releases at the top but both a bit below expectations … the weekend overall went so-so. Last week's openers had excellent holds, at least!

Next weekend: Domestic literary adaption Narziss und Goldmund will probably tbe the biggest opener but the movie is too serious for a big success I think. Also opening: My Spy and Like a Boss; with the domestic comedies still strong they'll have a difficult task in getting their audience I think.

As to the virus impact: In Austria, public events are forbidden as of now when they are >500 participants (outdoor) or >100 (indoor); no word yet from cinemas but If taken at face value, that should mean they can't sell more than 100 tickets per show. Since most shows are well below that treshold, this would hurt only the best-selling releases or specials with lots of invited people.

As expected; reaction from chain Cineplexx:

Quote

Other chains and single theaters will probably do the same.

So, as mentioned, smaller releases will stay pretty un-affected.

With things getting more and more unclear, after last weeks Känguru there's another german "hope" opening, Narziss und Goldmund. What I read, the movie cost around €10M. The InsideKino prediction is 80k WE and 250k total - it'll be a huge flop...

If really all cinemas close (which in three cities already happened it seems) and stay closed for quite some time, I fear this year could be the first time ever to stay below 100M admissions...

There have been 6 deaths yet and we're probably close to 3000 infected. I fear the german reaction to all this isn't very strict. Hopefully the low death count indicates that it isn't that bad...

1st Trend:

With the uncertainity this might be pessimistic (or not):

Känguru 110k (-66%/-71%)

Onward 50k (-68%/-73%)

Everything else below 50k

I don't think that is pessimistic, considering the first cities are closing and cinemas and I guess most of western Germany will eventually follow, considering schools and universities are closed in most parts.
