BO Germany/Austria: Dune 2 fine 2nd weekend

First estimates from insidekino.de for Germany's weekend have Jim Knopf with a possible increase and the new domestic comedy at about 75k on #2 - Tenet falling back to #3 (60k) which is a steeper drop than expected. With the absence of international releases in the post-Corona world, domestic productions are bound to have a much bigger market share than usual, even if absolute numbers might seem low. For some productions (mainly family releases), admissions even seem higher than would have been possible with competition.

Ok opening for the new domestic comedy Es ist zu deinem Besten, and good holds for family releases. Also good for La Daronne, a three-digit-PTA is ok under current circumstances. Domestic releases continue to dominate the charts in the absence of international hits.

Next weekend: Another domestic children's book adaption, Drachenreiter, should be the biggest opener and maybe #2. Among international releases, The Secret Garden will probably be the biggest opener.

 

In Austria, Es ist zu deinem Besten became #1 while A Nice Girl Like You continued its strong run on #2.

With governmental warnings, admissions took a bit of a dive over the weekend - what might have been a pretty good after-Corona-weekend turned into a mediocre one. Still a good opening for The Secret Garden! Domestic releases continue to "dominate" in the absence of Hollywood releases.

Next weekend: No big openers, but an interesting one in domestic thriller Cortex - an often neglected genre in Germany, but there have have been some nice productions over the years and there's no competition, so who knows? Might be enough for #2.

 

In Austria, Es ist zu deinem Besten was #1 and The Secret Garden opened on #2. A Nice Girl Like You continued to sell much better than in Germany.

O/u 1.7mn admits as compared to 1-1.2mn we were optimistically hoping for.

I think now 1.7mn is pretty certain. May be 1.75mn. If it continues all the way till New Year, may be 1.8mn.

Yes, Tenet is one of those movies that did really fine - I don't see it getting any higher even under on-Corona circumstances. In this case, restrictions were countered by the lack of competition and accordingly excellent legs as expected. Sadly, many other releases didn't find this nice spot (take for instance The New Mutants)

This factor work as catalyst. If you have merit of word of mouth, then it will help you in legs.

 

If you have trash WoM, people won't be risking for it.

Good opening for Greenland but everything else was pretty bad. Domestic thriller Cortex stayed far far behind my expectations, extremely poor PTA.

Next weekend: With Covid19 numbers on the rise, there's no silver lining on the horizon. French comic adaption Yakari hat good previews, maybe it can translate that to a strong overall opening week. The new adaption of The Witches might also attract some family business. But there's also some smaller family or youth releases, so holdovers will get hurt a lot I'd guess. The best we can hope for is a little overall plus from this (horrible) weekend.

Well, looks as if Germany's next weekend will be the last one for at least a few weeks, cinemas will be closed starting Monday. No decision yet in Austria but since our Covid19 cases are worse than Germany's it's probably just a matter of days ...

 

As I mentioned elsewhere, from the technical POV, a movie theater is probably one of the safer public places atm as long as people don't sing or shout, but since movies in general are still considered as something of a 2nd rate art form in Germany (and Austria), there's not much lobbying to keep them open.

Looks as if people in Germany want to use their last chance for a few weeks to see something on the big screen this weekend - Greenland with a possible increase and Yakari should be >100k after the weekend (including a lot of shows last weekend). Contrary to my opinion, other family relases seem to stay flat, too!

If those numbers hold, a pretty good weekend considering the circumstances. In Austria, Yakari os off to a good start,too.

Nice weekend with a lot of increases, a good opener in comic book adaption Yakari (already a TV series) and not a single release in the Top20 under 7k admissions! Remarkable numbers for the re-release of Dawn of the Dead!

Sadly, cinemas are closed from now on and will stay so at least through November, usually one of the strongest months.
