Austria's numbers for Nomadland are really ok, you wouldn't expect this release to do better numbers under normal market conditions. So, the demand is definitely there - what's missing are a few attractive releases. Upcoming next weekend are A Quiet Place 2 and Cruella; also WW84 and Mortal Kombat - and bavarian crime comedy Weissbier im Blut, such movies tend to do well here.

 

But now summer is in full swing, temperatures are hitting 30°C this week the first time this year, so most people will enjoy the outdoors next weekend. Accordingly, presales are about nil for any relase ...

Mark_G said that this trend should be taken with a grain of salt because the weather is very mixed, with so many released films theaters could get a capacity problem and it's the first weekend after a long time.

in Austria, Conjuring3 was in front with a good result (nearly twice as strong as in Germany), PeterRabbit2 behind and GodzillaKong on #3 (both a bit stronger than in Germany). Nice!

The first trend: #1 Black Widow 175k (in line with expectations, got only 270 copies so the theater average will be nice), #2 The Croods2 100k, #3 The Conjuring3 90k (a quite good hold), #4 Peter Rabbit 75k, #5 GvK 65k, #6 Catweazel.                                  Sorry for the format, the internet connection here is even worse than I thought.

Finally, something resemling a pre-Covid-chart! Yeah!

Black Widow did ok in only 266 venues, also good results from most other releases. Especially considering the Euro final! Healthy PTAs all around which is a very good sign for coming weeks.

In Austria, restrictions are a bit lower and cinemas have been open now for a few weeks, so the market is alrady a bit more back to "normal" than in Germany; Black Widow was #1 with stronger admissions but a much lower PTA.

What's also very "normal" is the fact that all of the Top5 are franchise movies or sequels ...

 

Next weekend: Fast and Furious 9 will compete for pretty much the same segment of the audience than Black Widow so let's see; some more screens should be available and maybe other releases can benefit from the rising general awareness (hey, we can go to the movies again!). An interesting arthouse release will be award-winning Danish production Druk ("Der Rausch"); trailer looks excellent but thanks to the seriousness, there's probably only a very limited market potential.

 

By the way, some of the Covid-spawned drive-in Cinemas are still in business! Fun fact …

Black Widow gets hit hard, as expected, other releases basically ok. Doesn't seem as if weather conditions have much impact. A bit surprised about SpaceJam, very little business for this one here, must have had better promotion in Germany.

It's still bad in some regions but not everywhere. I drove home yesterday from near Switzerland to Bavaria and the rivers had high water but it was still barely ok. It's very good that it's predicted to be sunny everywhere in the next days and at the moment the sunshine starts also where I live.

Overall it was pretty crowded where we had our breaks, despite or because of the bad weather (we had to search till we found a restaurant where we could eat although it was only late afternoon). Many people had to wait or go home. So I'm not surprised that the trend went up.
