BO Germany/Austria: Dune 2 fine 2nd weekend

Recommended Posts

Interesting side-effect of the  Corona crisis: Since distributors don't distribute any new distributions, the cinemas that are open (mostly drive-in) are playing reliable older releases or even classics ... meaning that some of the 2019 and early 2020 movies are showing fantastic legs (among them Parasite which missed 1mil admissions in Germany despite the Oscars push but should cross the mark in May)

Well, even if it's not much, it's good to see some chart again !

And domestic releases lead the pack, wonderful!

seems like the drive-in craze is slowly ebbing ... of course, with gastronomy open again, there are more alternatives from day to day.

In a surprise easing of regulations, cinemas in Austria may re-open as of today (distancing rules apply) - but the step came so sudden that the chains were  caught on the wrong foot - employees are still on leave, concession not yet stocked plus, of course, there's no new releases ... so, only a few arthouses and drive-ins are really opening today, most bigger venues opt for a mid-June opening.

Three domestic releases on top as some more "real" cinemas opened besides the drive-ins. With no new Hollywood fare until Tenet, expect this trend to continue.

as MarkG from insidekino.de points out, Bohemian Rhapsody is now the #1 2018 release in the German market. Thanks Corona!

By the end of 2018, BR wasn't even hitting 2.5m admission, can't believe it added at least 1.4m since 2019. meaning it had at least one-third of its box office gained after its 8th weekend of release

It was a favourite at the open air events. And the original run was extremely leggy, it was in the Top3 mid-January 2019, by mid-February it was already at 3,1mil total, mid-March 3,4mil, Mid-April 3,5mil ...

Same Top3 as last week but positions changed ... domestic fare is still the most popular choice even if PTA is dropping a bit! And the number of venues is slowly going up ...

Still mostly domestic releases with overall weaker numbers despite more cinemas re-opening. The Drive-In craze seems to have ebbed.

Despite more theaters returning to business, only two releases >5k admissions - obviously, audiences are still not too sure (plus, there's no new releases …). Now that the open air season ist starting, we might see some more older releases back in the charts.

Well, there were two starts this weekend, but the numbers keep dropping despite more and more cinemas returning to business.

Next weekend: With some more openers - among them a domestic twin comedy, Takeover - voll vertauscht - which might take the top spot - numbers should go up a bit. I'm also curious about the appeal of musical doc Krautrock; there were some really successful rock biographies in the last years so this might be just the thing to bring some audiences back. And - also a domestic production - arthouse romance/drama Undine would be a fringe release in other times but might very well end up in the top 3 with the Covid situation.

Sounds like theaters are allowed to show some hit movies from the past to get them going again.

E.g. Disney allows them to show Empire strikes Back (in English), as well as TFA, TLJ and Rogue One. I've also seen the third Hobbit and fourth Harry Potter scheduled at Cinemaxx.
