BO Germany/Austria: Dune 2 fine 2nd weekend

Recommended Posts

The Christmas markets are the only thing that comes to my mind what else people could do. Weather is not to blame: At least were I live the sunshine duration during the week was maybe 15 minutes.

Some Thursday actuals (source Blickpunkt: Film):

The new releases:

Mortal Engines (released in 500 theaters): 15k
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (515) 7k - let's see, WOM will decide and so far it's (very) good; in mathäser e.g. Spider-Man gets only the smallest cinema halls in the evening, as it happens often here they treat it as if it would only be a film for small kids (e.g. The Jungle Book finally was shown in the biggest auditorium instead the smallest as first planned)
Gegen den Strom (67): 1.5k

The holdovers (not too bad overall):

The Grinch: 17k (actuals last Thursday 26k)
100 Dinge: 17k (23k)
Fantastic Beasts 2: 16.5k (27k)
BR: 8.5k

2018 keeps on sucking.

On the other hand, that only means 2019 will look so much better compared to this year :)

Hopefully, but it's hard to be optimistic right now. There's no Football tournament next year, but we might get another really hot summer. But if that becomes more normal it might not affect cinemas as much anymore.

Horrible for the openers and not too good for holdovers either … animated Spider-Man is an instant flop, gasp at that PTA … Mortal Engines not much bettter but at least that's not a well-known franchise so an uphill battle. Looking for good news, Fantastic Beasts 2 is keeping ahead of part 1.

Next weekend: Aquaman should go higher than this weeks openers but more than 200k seem unlikely (Justice League wasn't big here), Bumblebee should cash in on the well-known franchise but looks lackluster, so same range, and Mary Poppins Returns is one more Disney remake nobody's been asking for, should see a run similar to Nutcracker's. Overall, I see The Grinch rather safely in #1 …

What kind of opening for Aquaman would result in typical MCU numbers? And does Germany normally have Christmas legs?

"typical" MCU numbers don't exist - take an unknown property like Ant-Man, none of the two movies reached a million admissions. An opening in the 250-300k range would be excellent for Aquaman.

And yes, there are christmas "legs", at least December is usually one of the strongest months (if not the strongest) but thanks to the many releases, those holiday legs are not for every movie.

Those are the OWs of the other DCEU movies in admissions:

admissions theatres

257.043 563 MOS
554.890 657 BvS
500.016 618 Suicide Squad
214.491 525 JL
222.252 563 WW

AQ should land between MOS and Suicide Squad. InsideKino predicts 375k and a total of 1,5M. I wouldn't be surprised if it'll be lower than both numbers.

Maybe around 300k for $3,75M on OW.

375k would be great or even 300k would be fine 😜

Some Thursday actuals (source Blickpunkt: Film):

The new releases:

Aquaman (released in 500 theaters) 60k/766k US$ - above expectations too
Mary Poppins Returns (released in 607 theaters, the original film had 4M admissions here): 26k
Bumblebee (460): 20k
Personally I expected worse numbers for MPR and Bumblebee...

The holdovers (not many numbers are reported as you can see but all look nice, will be the same for the rest of the movies):

The Grinch: 40k (actuals last Thursday 17k) - great!
100 Dinge: 21.5k (17k)
FB2: 20k (17k)

WTF, that's really good for Aquaman..

Really good for Grinch.

Meh for MPR

I expected less for Bumblebee, so it's good, but on the other hand 150k isn't much.

FB2 with a fucking 140k 6th weekend, that is crazy.

Can FB2 do 3.75M adm. in total (or at least get close?) that would be $42.5M (I of course hope for 4M, but I doubt it will get that far.)

100 Dinge with a great hold.

I honestly am surprised by ME (I expected at lest a 50% drop) though I am going to watch it tomorrow evening with two friends.

BR hopefully profits from Christmas season.
