BO Germany/Austria: Dune 2 fine 2nd weekend

Recommended Posts

38.1m admissions last year, down from 118.6m in 2019 and a new all time low. The biggest movie was Bad Boys For Life. It's interesting that they changed the terminology, it used be "besucher" but now they have as "tickets". What prompted that I wonder?

Theaters in Austria are allowed to reopen on May 19th (source: insidekino.de).
It says they're allowed so Idk if all will immediatly start business or if it will be step by step.

In Germany MK (of course) lost its release date (was on May 6th). Some bigger releases are still listed in late May, June and July (e.g. Cruella, Godzilla vs Kong, Conjuring 3, Saw, Nobody AQP II, Black Widow, F&F 9, Snake Eye) but I wouldn't bet on it.
The good thing if these movies would be released later = in autumn is that the football-EM wouldn't hurt them. And summer numbers aren't strong here anyway as you know.

I consider that too (at least after Pentecost) and so I saw that at least Drive-in-theaters in Bavaria show Demon Slayer in German :)
So probably most or all Autokinos will show this film but it was very sad to learn that only 12 (!) Autokinos still exist in Germany. An unbelievable low number :(
Edit: But at least I saw that these 12 Drive-ins did not lose admissions/stayed popular over the last 15 years.

Yes its sad but i think they will be appreciated by a lot of people (like me) who woudnt have went to them in a non-covid-world, but now, theyre like a saving grace since normal cinemas will still probably need many weeks to reopen.

Yes, you're right! Probably it's too late for an increase (to have more than 300k admissions) over the whole year but they will have many new guests in the upcoming weeks (who knows, maybe all summer long). And probably several people will like this experience and repeat it regularly in the future.

As mentioned, here in Austria indoor cinemas are back in business since Wed; DS is doing best but nearly all other releases are selling fine, too (note that atm we still have reduced seating AND fewer shows overall - I guess to reduce crowds at the concession - so a sellout would be something like a 40% sold show under normal circumstances, and there's less than half the usual shows)

But there's definitely a desire to return to the big screen, most releases are movies that would usually end up straight-to-DVD but even those stinkers are selling, say, 50 seats / day.

do we have any idea , about germany reopening date ?

At the moment the schedule shows three movies (Cruella, Crisis, Weißbier im Blut) on May 27. E.g. AQP II is listed on June 24. But there's no guarantee. The next meeting of Minister-Presidents is in three days which could bring (some) new guidelines (not only for theaters).

The German Filmverband (=film association/union, Idk the exact translation) said that under these conditions the release of big films would be inefficient and that they won't start before autumn. But in an update it said that the support for a reopening on July 1 increases massively.
PS: These are just my a bit vague infos. Every other info is welcome ;).
