BO Germany/Austria: Dune 2 fine 2nd weekend

Sunday must have been strong (sure was rainy here); Spidey up again and Pets2 with a massive increase ...

Yeah, damn:

Spidey: 435k (+56k Previews) (Homecoming opened with 300k)

Pets 2: 315k (+59% / 30.7% with Previews and Sneaks on Sunday and all that)

Annabelle 3: 130k (between the first and the second)

Aladdin: 67.5k (+34.7%)

FFA: 65k (+33.2%)

Pets 2 is way higher than I thought.

Didn't increase as much as I hoped but at least it increased:

Hope Aladdin can increase to something around 75k (I know that would be a 50% increase) but to at least get any close to 2m it would need that increase and then incredible legs afterwards, to be fair I highly doubt it will get past 1.8m but one can always hope (1.8m would be a 6.2x so quite good).

Nice weekend after all, good openings and terrific increases!

Next weekend: Danny Boyle's Yesterday will probably be the biggest opener but there's little doubt that Spidey and the Pets will stay on top, Yesterday will probably come in 3rd.

In other news, Austria's June numbers are official and it's been the worst ever (no surprise since it was also the hottest June ever) - 2nd quarter is still up from 2017 thanks to the strong April but 1st and 2nd quarter combined make for the worst half-year in recent history (but we're only 1% down from the horrible 2018 numbers so strangely there's still hope we won't see the worst year ever!)

Why is that btw? Seems to be the case in a lot of European countries.

Honestly, no idea.

Germans tend to all go swimming or to a beer garden when it's hot or not leave their home at all.

Why? I don't know, most cinemas are air-conditioned nowadays so it would be a good idea too.

If it is hot, I somehow love to watch the movie in the cinema +  enjoy the cool air there. Nowadays, it is also a good way to avoid the hot weather outside.

I wonder often too, but me too do not drive as much to a cinema during the hot weeks, beside being aware about that being a bit illogical.

Short ways to something where the complete family can enjoy or avoid the heat/sun.

No long got drives in a car if possible

Plus eat something typical beer-garden like, typical pick-nick, no cooking at home to increase the heat within the homes

Spending the day inside and doing ~ barbecue / grilling with grilled legumes and salads.... with a cool beer or so at the cooler evenings - again no cooking inside....

Maybe based on:

- The most private homes here have no air condition (its not green anyway) hence the no cooking inside.

- Tradition how to react to heat waves.

I think its possible in Europe people drove (past) in average smaller cars - I feel the smaller modern cars heat up faster than bigger cars, less nice to drive during the hot hours.

Some cinemas in the past were not good with fresh air and temps = I guess the habits didn't change to more cinema visits like in some other countries with hot weather too.

Maybe bcs here its not every year that hot or only for a rather short time, ppl want it, but if too hot hate and love it = love to enjoy the outside of bearable.

Only ideas.... there could be a lot more 😉

Obviously Germans are sunshine fanatics. Maybe because of the often grey winters or because of the long time some spend in the office. Ironically they seem to like to sit in their cars the half weekend to drive into the countryside ;). Still, in other countries the weather- and working-conditions are similar and the theaters are not almost deserted.

No surprise that the movies improved in the third trend last weekend. The Saturday was - where I live - cloudy after noon (with a mini-storm at the Starnberger See) and the Sunday was cold and grey. Till today it was pretty cold, at the moment with a bit more sunshine.
And the weekend is predicted to become not too hot either, partly muggy and partly changeable. Should work quite well for the movies, at least it won't become as bad as two weeks ago.

(T-6)

Don’t know what to make out of this…

The lack of traditional Previews makes this even harder to count.

It got 5941 additional seats on Wednesday for a total of 18160 seats on Wednesday that’s more seats than for example Five Feet Apart got over the whole weekend.

Also it’s incredibly, incredibly Wednesday-heavy.

Previews: X + 21 + X = 16 (+7)

Wed: 155 + 110 + 422 = 687 (+532 / + 5941 new Seats)

Th: 19 + 47 + 46 = 112 (+83)

Fri: 21 + 25 + 81 = 127 (+113)

Sat: 41 + 16 + 48 = 105 (+59)

Sun: 17 + 2 + 23 = 42 (+35)

TFSS: 98 + 90 + 198 = 386 (+290)

PWTFSS: 253 + 221 + 620 = 1094 / 68204 -> 1.6% (+827/ +5941)

OD now is roughly on par with Spider-Man’s OD one day out.

Even the weak weekend is over FFA, Godzilla, Pets 2, Rocketman, MIBI, Dark Phoenix and about 78% of Aladdin’s final presales on Preview night and about 40% of John Wick’s final presale numbers.

Don’t think it will be as big as it could be but it certainly should get the second best summer opening only behind Endgame and I really hope that it’s 4-day Wend will also get the 2ndbest opening overall this year.

First Trend for the Wend:

Spidey: 300k (-30.9% / -38.8% with Previews)

Pets 2: 275k (-13.5% but still 38.9% / 14.1% over OWend)

Yesterday: 140k (incl. Previews)

Annabelle 3: 85k (-31.5% / -35.6%)

FFA: 70k (+6.1%)

Aladdin: 70k (+1% so flat)

Totals after this Wend:

Spider: 960k (First one had barely above 1m)

Pets 2: 1090k (will end it's run above 2m so a 10x multi from true OWend)

Annabelle 3: 260k (First one finished with 471k, second with 602k, this will end somewhere around the first)

FFA: 420k (final around 600k)

Aladdin: 1725k (will hopefully end slightly above TJB 1877k, I guess TLK will hurt it too much so it won't be able to get to 2m, but 1880k would still be a 6.5x)

Thursday actuals:

Spider: 55k (€535k ≈ $600k

Pets 2: 50k (€385k ≈ $485k)

Yesterday: 18.5k (€160k ≈ $180k)

Annabelle 3: 15k (€135k ≈ $150k)

Alladin: 12k (€105k ≈ $120k)

But it's important to clarify that SM:HC just had 1M total, after 2nd WE it was at 555k - that might not be clear. Impressive that its 2nd WE might beat SM:HC OW.

Weather is so bad today, I hope there might be increases with the 2nd Trend.

Yeah, sorry, FFA will increase something between 50% and 70% compared to the first.

Really hope Aladdin sees an increase I am still hoping for those 2m but know that it's really unlikely unless it manages a good increase this weekend and doesn't drop much against TLK which is rather unlikely.

That hold for Pets 2, the fuck, I haven't watched it and don't plan on doing it because I didn't like the first one, but a lot of people seem to like it.

No, also every time I read FFA I think Filmförderungsanstalt🤣

Maybe because Fünf Füße voneinander entfernt would be an awful title, so it got a new name Drei Schritte zu Dir. Auch wenn fünf Fuß weniger als drei Schritte sind...

If just the weather could be this bad next Wend we might see a nice OWend for TLK but it looks like weather will get better.

And with the 3rd Trend there are some increases again!

Pets2 350k (+10%) This means it's 77% above its first WE (excluding Previews). It should be around 1,16M after Sunday and therefore already have a multipler of x5,85!!! (Pets1 had x5,45 after the whole run...) :ohmygod:

The third WE of the first Pets was 365k, so despite opening 72% lower it's now nearly the same...
