BO Germany/Austria: Dune 2 fine 2nd weekend

Recommended Posts

The Monday update:

#1 F9 305k/1.08M total admissions (the first film since Tenet that crossed 1M admissions)
#2 BW 75k
#3 The Croods2 75k
#4 The Conjuring3 67.5k (already above the total result expectation of 500k admissions, my guess is that it had ca. 535k+ total admissions including Sunday)
#5 Der Rausch 67.5k (including previews so Space Jam and maybe other films of the top 10 will be listed above Der Rausch in the actuals tomorrow; still its result is above the expectations)
#6 Space Jam 62.5k
#7 The Ogglies 55k
#8 Spirit Untamed 47.5k
#9 PR2 45k
#10 Catweazle 45k

In Austria, F&F9 started even better with already >100k admissions total after Sunday; Black Widow also much stronger than in Germany. While the weekend was good in Germany, it was really excellent in Austria, very much like a good non-Covid weekend in fact.

Pretty steep drops all around; in Austria we had similar drops. Nearly a 30% decline from last weekend overall, not good.

Next weekend: Jungle Cruise and Old are the big openers, and on the domestic front the final Ostwind movie (girls&horses) should also generate some business. All three might (should) open with >100k admissions, and Cash Truck also has a small chance to do so, but F&F9 will probably stay on top of the chart. Overall business should increase a bit with this wide range of attractive new releases.

sorry, you're right of course - really bad but with Disney now relying strongly on home video, cinemas seem to come as an afterthought 😟 - at my theater, there's only 4 shows/day for it.

A LOT of new releases , but #1 remained FF9 with a good hold. But with the openers all coming in a bit below expectations, overall business didn't go up by a lot compared to last week.

In Austria, a similar weekend, though Jungle Cruise did a lot better here while Ostwind5 was worse, so #2  and #3 changed positions compared to Germany.

Next weekend: After this week's wave, only two big releases next weekend: Suicide Squad 2 and Kaiserschmarrndrama. The latter is already the 7th in the series of Rita Falk adaptions, every one managed a bigger opening than the ones before - if this trend continues, it will be #1 for the weekend, but with limited capacities, these might become hard to reach.

First estimates have, indeed, the local crime comedy in front with >200k - excellent result, capacities are still limited! (And the movie has little impact in northern Germany, so most of those 200k should be from Bavaria). Suicide Squad 2 with an ok start but below 200k and FF9 remains in the Top3 but has a steep drop.

Very good weekend (given the limited capacities); Bavarian crime comedy Kaiserschmarrndrama took the top spot with the best opening of the series so far; Suicide Squad 2 wasn't doing big numbers but a PTA >300 is at least ok. Here in Austria, the crime comedy was more than doubling Germany's numbers (per capita, of course) and is already well beyond 50k admissions after the OW, fantastic result. Most other releases had very similar numbers to Germany's, but like last weekend, Ostwind fell behind Germany while Jungle Cruise did better here.

Next weekend: Nothing blockbustery on the horizon; The Forever Purge could show a >100k OW and Free Guy is a bit of a black horse, very few presales at my cinema - if it's really good, it might become a bit of a sleeper I guess. Among all the franchise stuff, original productions have a difficult position but in the post-Covid-world, drops have been flatter than in past years and legs accordingly better. Tom & Jerry might also have some success but the market is saturated with family stuff, so I'm pretty confident that this week's Top Duo will stay in front!

As an aside, by now, it's really fun commenting the Boxoffice once more. The numbers show that there's still a lot of interest for the movies (and on the big screen, too!) and there's not only blockbusters, but quite a gamut of different material seeing some success. Yeah!

This weekend was so far and is also predicted to stay very sunny so don't wonder if the numbers are not too good. And because the next weekend could already be mixed again people will probably use this weekend for outdoor activities as much as they can. Therefor the first trend is ok:

#1 Kaiserschmarrndrama 100k
#2 TSS 80k
#3 Tom & Jerry 90k (with previews)

#4 Free Guy 70k (with previews)
#5/6 F9 and The Forever Purge with each 55k

The Monday update (the new releases are bold and the previews are included):

#1 Kaiserschmarrndrama 115k/450k (total admissions)
#2 TSS 80k
#3
Free Guy 80k
#4 Tom & Jerry 95k
#5 The Forever Purge 67.5k
#6 F9 57.5k

Ostwind5 33k
Wrath of Man 27.5k (that's the Sunday estimate
so probably the actual number is a bit better)
The Ogglies 19k
Catweazle 12k
Generation Beziehungsunfähig 10k
Fabian 7.5k

The weekdays are predicted to be mixed (including Thursday) but the next weekend could again be pretty sunny.

Business is back to pre-Covid-times and that means, yes, with hot weather, Germans stay outdoors and the BO suffers, horrible drops across the chart. As expected, last week's top 2 stayed in front, but it was a lot closer than I expected, Free Guy had a fine OW (considering the weather); so did Tom&Jerry (which hurt other family stuff, of course). Still, all 20 entries had >10k admissions, there were worse summer weekends in the past. Kaiserschmarrndrama opened higher than its predecessor Leberkäsjunkie but is now trailing it by a few k; let's see if it can catch up - but 1mil total should be safe. The Suicide Squad's drop was actually ok compared to some other releases, maybe some good WOM?

In Austria, the crime comedy was repeating its #1 place but with a much better result; The Forever Purge did also better than in Germany while the other two big openers were on the same level.

Next weekend: Weather is expected to stay a bit rainy throughout the week so expect good weekdays and a better weekend, hopefully even increases! Among openers, kiddie movie Paw Patrol 2 should be the strongest (had really strong previews this weekend which would have put it into the top3…); among other openers, Snake Eyes, Escape Room 2 and Promising Young Woman look good for the Top6 but not the Top spot which should stay in domestic hands.

Seems I underestimated that Paw Patrol movie - I had no idea how popular this seems to be ... also, it's not really a part 2 but the first one made for the big screen; last year's outing seems to have been a TV mashup. So we will actually see a new #1, even in Austria where Kaiserschmarrndrama is much bigger than in Germany! Presales for Paw Patrol are crazy at my cinema - here, kiddie movies don't get much presales as a rule; seems like parents usually don't care where the kids are seated. So - massive OW coming up! Other family stuff - tremble ...

MarkG from insidekino.de has his first estimates for Germany's weekend; Paw Patrol is in front with 325k admissions until Sunday (which means an about 240k weekend) - holdovers are showing excellent drops or even increases as was to be expected (even an increase for Tom&Jerry which I did not expect, seems the target demo is significantly older than PP ...)
