Brazil Box Office Thread

Recommended Posts

A Quiet Place 2 got moved from this week to 24/06, Nobody also got delayed to the same day. Eternals also moved to 04/11 and Wrath of Man to 26/08. Like I said, expect delays to be frequent the next few weeks. Cruella and Those Who Wish Me Dead remained to release on thursday. In other news, Filme B estimates that the box office right now is around 20% of the pre-pandemic numbers.

Also, I updated the numbers up on my previous post with the new estimates.

Box office May 28-30

filme renda (R$)
1 Cruella 1.663.000
2 Godzilla vs Kong 929.000
3 Mortal Kombat 819.000
4 The Unholy 535.000
5 Those Who Wish Me Dead 243.000
6 War With Grandpa 159.000
7 Demon Slayer 94.500
8 Chaos Walking 54,000
9 Tom & Jerry 35.800
10 Promissing Young Woman 27.600

Disapointing opening for Cruella. It released at 1st and it was better than MK last week, but as a Disney movie in Brazil this is very weak and I was totally expecting more. The weekend is down 6% from last weekend and GvK reached R$10M total gross. It still have ways to go before beating WW84's R$17.7M to get the top position for the year, but if it keeps these legs going there is still hope.

This thursday launches The Conjuring 3 and Come Away.

Cruella never looked like the kind of movie that'd move crowds in Brazil from what I remember, it looks a bit different from your typical Disney.

Box office June 3-6

filme renda (R$)
1 The Conjuring 3 8.632.000
2 Cruella 2,026.000
3 Godzilla vs Kong 752.000
4 Mortal Kombat 516.000
5 The Unholy 304.500
6 Come Away 272.300
7 Those Who Wished Me Dead 120.300
8 War With Grandpa 64,000
9 Demon Slayer 50.600
10 Tom & Jerry 36.000

-Increase of over 179% over last weekend, best weekend since the pandemic

-Thursday was the best single day from the pandemic

-The Conjuring 3 had the best opening of 2021, above the first movie and bellow the second one, first movie to reach blockbuster status since the reopening

-Cruella improved 21%. Word of mouth is strong.

-We are on the second weekend and Cruella still haven't charted on the top 10 of D+, pretty much the entire income of the movie in Brazil are coming from theaters.

-The Conjuring 3 immediately jumped to no.3 spot from the top 20 of the year so far. Should pass GvK before the next weekend. Cruella and MK also entered the top 10.

To summarize, a very needed win for brazilian theaters and this added a lot of hope. Next week probably will not be as exciting, but it will release Spirit Untamed and Quem Vai Ficar Com Mario?, with the expectation to be the first hit of a local movie in a really long time.

Outstanding hold for Conjuring 3. It is now the first movie to reach 1M tickets sales since the pandemic. It is also only R$700k behind WW84 to become the biggest box office of the pandemic. Spiral started its previews this weekend and got the third place. Spirit and Quem Vai Ficar com Mario bombed. This weekend fell 16% over last weekend but it remained above the other weekends this year.

Next friday releases In the Heights, Nowhere Special and the full release of Spiral, and some local movies on limited release.

9 Quem vai Ficar com Mario? 38.000

27.000

An less optimistic weekend this time. Box office fell 35% despite a good number of new cities reopening their cinemas. We had bad openings all around: Spiral fell on its opening from it's pre-release (This is really bad for any movie, but it is worse considering how popular the Saw movies usually are in the country), while In the Heights had a simply dredful opening. On a positive note, Cruella remains pretty much flat and it is now the 4th biggest movie of the year, approaching GvK. Also Demon Slayer ressurrected out of nowhere.

Next weekend is the F9 release. Expect big.

Box office July 2-4

filme renda (R$)
1 Fast 9 10.978.923
2 Croods 2 2.583.309
3 The Conjuring 3 1.308.007
4 Cruella 474.562

8 4x100 23.429
9 The Best Years of a Life 21.929
10 In the Heighs

8.600

Fast 9 is at R$31M+ so far, 1,5M tickets sold, and it is now the 1st movie at the year. Croods 2 sort of failed to make a splash at the opening, but expected for a movie pirated from half the country, legs could be good though. Right now 74% of the circuit is now open. Let's see how big Black Widow can get this weekend.

Black Widow is releasing at 1.4k screenings, I hope Disney is kind enough to share a some numbers tomorrow. Meanwhile Fast 9 reached 2 million tickets sold, becoming the first from the pandemic. The Conjuring could still get there if Black Widow doesn't kill the rest of its legs.
