Is Black Phone releasing on streaming in 2 weeks already? If so, even with good WOM, RIP to its legs.

Only on PVOD. It's legs won't get cut. If it does, it's probably due to tough competition with Thor and Nope coming out.

From Universal. Movies that open below 50M get onto PVOD in 17 days. But I think CJohn has nothing to worry about, since PVOD doesn't really impact legs at all

It depends on the type of movie. If it is a more Internet friendly movie, people will just download it on torrents. If it is something like The Bad Guys, the impact is minimal/non-existent.

Different genre but Taken was available on torrent before its release and had no impact.

So is this service open to whoever that wish to rent or you need be attached to a certain platform ?

you can rent it from iTunes, Amazon Prime, and Vudu for that price. Some movies have more expensive rental prices during that window. Universal seemingly changed their minds on Candyman and Old on the 17-day window.

Actually what exactly is PVOD? Are they only available to Peacock subscribers?

Paid VOD - so renting at home to watch, but for like $20. Not free with a subscription

Studios don't give a shit about movie theaters. They want movies on their streamers asap. This is what is gonna kill theaters.

Tom Cruise is a legend and Paramount are pretty dumb.

I'm glad it's up to Tom Cruise instead of Paramount on when to send it to streaming. He doesn't look 59 at all. Glad he's a firm believer in the theatrical experience.

Making money in theaters that they have to share, so they want to use the “hot” title to bolster their own streaming service where it’s all theirs

A PVOD release is fine, maybe in August given the run, but not free until at least Sept/Oct

wait wtf it's going on pvod that early?

Universal agreed to 17 day PVOD window for movies opening less than $50 million. However, Candyman and Old went much later than 17 days after their respective theatrical release dates last year (both opened sub-25m).

We don't know that.

Candyman and Old didn't get PVOD releases in 17 days. There's nothing confirmed for Black Phone as well, you're just arguing based on personal thoughts.

With the movie overperforming and probably getting some good drops for the next days, UNI can easily give it more time, since they don't announced anything and their PVOD releases are more of a case to case than a rule.

I’d be shocked if Black Phone only gets low $20m’s from $3m previews.

It’s not fan driven or “spoiler avoidance” like Scream, which had a multiplier of 8.6x previews during the height of omicron.

I’d expect high 20’s-30m now. Great preview number.

Solid for Elvis, at least it’s on track for over $30m, but I thought with the buzz and level of marketing it would breakout a bit more, it’s early though so we’ll see!

Shyamalan and Peele asked for those extended windows. We will see if Scott Derrickson has that kind of clout.

I generally open to a shorter window to PVOD as long as they are not free to acquire. In fact, for a smaller movies, the buzz generated from PVOD can even somehow rejuvenate the buzz and benefit back to their late theatrical run. But I agree, 17 days is still kind of crazy short.
