Why Disney didn't release Mulan in the most-family-friendly market in the world when theatres are eager to re-open, I'll never know. Stupidest decision.

not only that but overseas inluding china are in very good shape , disney could release mulan theatrical os and in canada and in pvod for us later

Ok, so Canacine is now updating but there are two important asterics to it:

  • As reported before theatre chains and distribuitors are pushing for a permanent 4-Day opening weekend so from now on Canacine will be reporting grosses from Thursday to Friday instead of the usual FSS they used to do,
  • Given the past change they won't be publishing weekdays results anymore. They might change latter on but at the moment it will stay that way.

This weekend's chart coming.

SEPTEMBER 3RD-6TH WEEKEND. NEW MUTANTS OPENS AND HOLDOVERS MANTAIN.

New Mutants

- Highest opening since March nearly doubling Scoob's first frame just three weeks ago.

- True FSS is at $10.1M and 153K admissions which places below Fantastic 4's 1.3M and Dark Phoenix 1.5M
- Next weekend shall be important as it faces no competition and keeps adding theatres

Scoob!

- Like most holdovers since June it has had great holds and now adds three weekends over $5M lc so is hard to see where it'll stop but $35M+ aren't far fetched

Went to see The New Mutants in Imax, sunday at 2pm, we were 12 people in the whole theater... if that's not sad I don't know what is then.

Cinepolis was empty when we arrived not sure many other movies had that much people. When we left there was some more movement but it feels so strange going to an empty theater chain and specially one as big as Perisur and as @Carlangonz mentioned... the mall was full and restaurants were crowded... people still do not trust going to the movies.

But I must say I have already bought my tickets for Imax on Wednesday 16th for Tenet... Perisur and Universidad were crowded (well Covid crowded I mean)... almost all center seats have already been taken for the three showings of that day... so I think it will really open way much better than The New Mutants... considering it was only for Wednesday and not the full weekend.

As @carlsalf38 pointed tickets for Tenet are now on sale ahead of its 5-Day opening taking advantage of Independence Day. It'll be released day to date in drive-ins where it's selling very well.

Some things happened yesterday during a Canacine meeting:

  • Permanent 4-Day openings are now official. Openings on thursday now will happen for all titles all year and not just during summer holidays and winter holidays. It's understandable but still messes up all future comps.
  • Mulan definitely won't be releasing in Mexico. So I assume is the same with the rest of Latin America.

Same in Uruguay, I think the only two countries with open cinemas in Latin America. Tenet is opening here on Wednesday 16th and Mulan has been removed from schedule

SEPTEMBER 10TH-13TH WEEKEND. NEW MUTANTS SCORES A SUB-30% DROP AHEAD OF TENET'S OPENING. SCOOB SURPASSES A 5X MULTI.

New Mutants

- It seems an okay drop but not really near other recent openers on their second weekend. Comparing only FSS it held better with a 23%. We'll see how Tenet affects it and if reaches $45M+

Scoob!

- It became the first release post shutdown to gross over $1M USD during its run with great legs still going on. Trolls releases in two weeks so it's leaning closer to $1.5M than $2M

Reopening and growth

- Last weekend (only FSS) saw nearly double gross of its previous weekend but this weekend fell 7.2%. Still it's solid and now there are two consecutive weekends over $1M USD and the trend shall continue with Tenet opening on Wednesday.
- We're still somewhere somewhere in 70s% of locations reopened with some states still to go during the next couple of weeks.

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 New Mutants $8.80 -26.05% $25 $1.16 137.8K 400.4K

I was expecting $1mn atleast considering 5 days and National Day holiday. But then TENET opening in USA was around The New Mutants only, so guess that make sense too.

Unfourtunately I think that just like in the US it'll be hard and a slow process for cinema to recover here.

SEPTEMBER 16TH-20TH WEEKEND. INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND. TENET TOPS ON OPENING BUT FALLS BELOW DUNKIRK. NEW MUTANTS AND SCOOB KEEP HOLDING WELL.

Tenet

- Wednesday was obviously its biggest day but couldn't keep the pace for the weekend. Pure FSS frame was $10.7M which is not far off from New Mutant's $10.1M on its FSS first frame.

- 5-Day is about half of Dunkirk's 4-Day opening in lc but 60% below in admissions.

- Both Dunkirk and Inception had healthy runs in the market so hopefully this legs a bit better than New Mutants and won't be that far from Dunkirk's final gross.

Between () is shown the figure for pure FSS.

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 Tenet $12.60 ($10.7)   $17.40 $829K 173.9K 238.3K

3 Scoob! $3.70 ($3.3) -11.90% $33.70 $1.58 67.4K 609.8K
4 Fantasy Island $1.30 ($1.1) -31.57% $11.80 $548K 22.5K 197.9K

So more bad news for movies this year. After the terrible numbers Tenet has done in USA, China and now Mexico, almost everything has moved out of this year.

Disney just announced Black Widow moves to May 2021, Eternals to Nov. 2021. Death on the Nile moves from October to December and Wonder Woman was announced previously for Christmas... so October is also lost.

I think theaters should basically close again until people really want to come back to the movies. I don't really think they are even covering expenses with these terrible numbers.

The only saving grace would be No Time to Die and that is if the movie doesn't move from November¡ I don't think Disney will keep Soul for those dates either, seeing how they are running from cinemas.

Impact on reopening of mexican theatres

BTS >>> Christopher Nolan

Break the Silence, the special event from Korean act BTS is aiming at no.1 this frame with around $14M+ lc for the weekend ($19M+ lc for the 4-Day) which puts it as the highest grossing opening since Onward's back in march surpassing both New Mutants and Tenet. The latter is looking to finish the weekend nearing $30M lc.

I'm not afraid of theatres shutting down again but I'm fearful of more locations being permanently closed which seems to be inevitable after all these delays. Both chains are working the best they can on new concepts and businesses but GA just doesn't care to go back and not even 2021 will be all fine.

No Time to Die won't bank here. 007 is basically a GA thing and is not even particularly something big or buzzy here. Only WW84 can make a decent return but I even doubt it'll explode as the first one did.
