Mexico Box Office | Kongzilla repeats on top, Civil War and Abigail underperform

MARCH 16-18 WEEKEND. TOMB RAIDER EASILY DOES NO. 1. PETER RABBIT OPENS PRETTY MEH AND BLACK PANTHER REFUSES TO DROP OVER 50%

Tomb Raider

- 4% over Ghost in the Shell but nearly 40% behind Asassin's Creed and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Considering it isn't part of a popular franchise like RE, doesn't have a fanbase as big as AC or doesn't have a big name starring it like GitS, is a decent number.

- $90M-$100M as final number, competition is making harder its run.

Peter Rabbit

- 'Meh' result, half of Smurfs 2 and 40% behind The Emoji Movie. Could leg into $70M+ but is really a mistery, in two weeks is facing direct competition from Sherlock Gnomes and A Wrinkle in Time.

Black Panther

Keeps amazing it with incredible holds despite competition. Already topped JL and SM:HC (i've would never imagined it!) as 7th biggest SH title and now is 5th biggest MCU movie.

- Should go a bit over $500M, 21st movie to do so and the 9th for a Disney property.

MARCH 23-25 WEEKEND. PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING HAS A SLOW START, TOMB RAIDER PLUNGES AND BLACK PANTHER STILL SOARS.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

- 14% over first Pacific Rim, 26% and 13% behind Skull Island and Godzilla respectively.

- Gets a significant cut of screens this weekend due to RPO, AWiT and Gnomes. Holly week is helping it to hold well.

Peter Rabbit

- Holidays are giving it a great boost. Kids return 'til April 9th and its only direct competition are Sherlock Gnomes and Wrinkle in Time.

- $80M+ are a safe bet, $100M are a long shot.

Tomb Raider

- Huge drop, PR and RPO are stealing it audiences, so is not making much more money.

Black Panther

- As @Purple Minion said, should come close to $520M and move Suicide Squad as 20th highest grosser all-time and 6th among SH titles, only behind two Avengers, Civil War, Batman v Superman and Iron Man 3.

- Fourth MCU movie on surpassing a 3x multi after Iron Man, Thor and Avengers. Fifht on passing 10M admissions and 7th for SH films behind the ones up there along with Spider-Man 3.

In other news...

- Apparently, Disney dropped the ball on Wrinkle in Time, is getting a very low number of screens and shows and marketing never appeared. Probably won't even open as #2.

- Ready Player One held 3D previews yesterday (Tuesday), i've seen very positive reactions, let's see how it handles its run.

- People are calling over chains for lack of Infinity War tickets, although they should be going on sale very soon. My only comparisons are Civil War and Age of Ultron, any 2017 title would be useless and beaten winthin days. Coco and The Force Awakens crashed system, Age of Ultron held shows as early as 6:00 and 7:00 AM at several locations on opening weekend. What Infinity War could cause?

- Deadpool 2 has been officialy moved to May 18th, Overboard moved a week from May 4th to May 10th. Isle of Dogs is opening on May 4th, but still unknown if is going wide or limited (like any Wes Anderson movie).

Is there a reason BP is doing so well for a first time solo? Just good wom in Mexico? Marvel brand or attachment to IW?

Wouldn't say is an event like in the US, but definitely good wom has made its fantastic run. Marvel brand obviously helps at first but it was well recommended. Infinity War has only helped for late legs due to the last trailer.

I remember seeing some people on reddit that lived in Mexico(at least thats what they said) saying no one was interested in seeing it and it wouldn't do well there lol

:sarah: I didn't see those legs coming...

The bigger 7th weekends i can only remember are Coco, Avatar and maybe Titanic. Panther is finishing a few thousand pesos over Avengers' 7th frame.

This is just jaw-dropping considering the screens and shows is been losing to competition.

IW easily goes for Top 3. Opening is 3-Day so something similar to CW, at least in ER.

I2 is a bigger mystery. $150M+ but ER could mess it up in USD as it is two weeks ahead of elections. Early marketing is powerful for this one, way better than Dory or MU.

MARCH 30-APRIL 01 WEEKEND. READY PLAYER ONE WINS WEEKEND. HOLDOVERS EXCEPT BP PLUNGE. WRINKLE AND GNOMES FLOP.

Ready Player One

+7% from G.I. Joe: Retaliation and 20%+ from Hunger Games. Both legged to $170M+ and won't be hard for this one. It has a shot to $200M+ depending on how much Rampage affects.

- WoM seems to be working good, with most of schools still off next week we'll see clearly how far can go.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

- Good Friday prevent from a bigger drop. Rampage is definitely a bigger danger for this one.

- Should clear $220M and add a few millions more getting close of $230M.

Hasta que la Boda nos Separe

Fourth highest OW for a local title in 2018. Fourth 2018 local title to cross $100M+

- Great hit considering it had discret marketing and no star-power.

A Wrinke in Time

-58% from Tomorrowland and -62% from John Carter.

- Uncertain fate, $50M+ is target.

I couldn't share this until today but still something. The "special guest" coming to Mexico with Joe Russo is...

pY5oKFB.jpg

And they're coming... TOMORROW! (Thursday). First half hour of the movie was showed to local press just an hour ago. They have same embargo date as in the US.

Meanwhile, yesterday (Tuesday) Cinépolis closed its app for the last update before Infinity War. That's really weird, they do updates and maintenance but never close the app or website unless they change the entire interface. Massive demand is expected.
