F4 at #1 with a soft 4-day total. Pitch Perfect 2 opens at #7, quite low unless it was only previews. Minions now #3 in all-time audience!

Awful market this, Mexico really dropped the ball, Minions highest animated film ever and now FF is having a decent OW. WTF

The exchange rates are worsening and the economy is not so good right now, the crazy growth couldn't go on forever. However it's not fair to judge it with F4 given it's not exactly an amazing movie..

Nostalgia is a huge element for Mexico moviegoers, material based on "oldies" (like video games or super hero cartoons) always go well. There's room in the market for every kind of film, both Inside Out and San Andreas managed US$30M and there could be 4 movies over US$45M.

Minions is a pan-Latin American phenomenon, it's the highest grossing animated film ever in Brazil and Argentina. Animated movie sequels will always do better than the previous one (with exceptions, of course). Just check the pattern of Toy Story, Monsters, Ice Age and now Despicable/Minions. Finding Dory should be huge.

Won't have a chance to publish the full weekly chart today. Highlights:

  • Minion's audience reached 15,852,950. 16 million, here we go!
  • F4 had a bad Mon-Thu, still #1 but total just US$6.96M.
  • #2 is MI:5 and #3 Pixels.

Guess comparisons these days are better measured in audience and gross in pesos. Toy Story 3 still is #1 on local currency and Minions may not surpass it.

Not much info about this weekend but it seems to be a weak one. BoxOffice.com reports:

  • F4 repeats at #1 US$1.7M for a US$9.0M total (rounded-up),
  • Ant-Man had a good hold, -28% from previous weekend.
  • Pixels total: US$11.4M.

I think admissions is a better way of measurement than gross given the downward spiral of many currencies at the moment.

If Minions had the same exchange rate as Pirates or TS3 or other films, it would have been way ahead of many films now. It's going to be even more difficult next year for films in Mexico, Russia and other countries to score big numbers as in 2011-2013.
