Purple Minion

Mexico Box Office | Frozen Empire spooks with $2.7M OW; Kung Fu P4nd4 reaches $22.8M, Dune 2 crosses $10M.

These are the news I enjoy to read after returning from vacation 😎

Even my most optimistic scenario for TS4 before release was $950M lc. This is just wild! Doesn't matter where it lands it is already historical and is ending closer from #1 than #3. I'll add up more later with the report.

JUNE 28TH-30TH. WODDY AND BUZZ FLY INTO NO. 4 ALL-TIME AND RECORD THE BEST SECOND WEEKEND EVER. ANABELLE COMES HOME ON PAR WITH CREATION.

Toy Story 4

- Beats Coco’s second frame as the best second weekend ever by 18.6%. To put into perspective: this second weekend is bigger than the opening weekend of any animated title –although is on par with Minions opening- and would be the 8th highest opening ever.

- Already beat Toy Story 3 and Incredibles 2, all Top 4 animated is Pixar. Next weekend should pass Coco as the highest grossing animated title of all-time and Infinity War as 2nd highest grosser overall only below recent hit Avengers: Endgame.

- Summer holidays are around the corner and they’ll leave a perfect two-weeks window for this one and Far From Home before facing The Lion King. If co-exist with Spidey a la Inside-Out/Jurassic World or Incredibles 2/Fallen Kingdom and takes advantage of holidays then Endgame recent record would be in jeopardy and even if doesn’t beat it's going to be close. Far From Home, Lion King and Endgame’s re-expansion are making the difference.

Anabelle Comes Home

- 5% below Anabelle: Creation and 38.62% above Curse of Llorona. Should clear over the first Conjuring and first Anabelle but $300M aren’t safe at all.

Avengers: Endgame

- Good PSA considering it only had a show per day in most of its 446 theatres and screens; should add a similar amount Monday-Thursday when its run ends.

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 Toy Story 4 $244.5 -46,34% $948.3 $49.40 4.1 16.6

Wow, I wonder if any market has ever had the all-time highest gross record broken not once but twice in one year? Even if TS4 doesn't make it, #1 and #2 both in one year is extremely impressive.

Mexico back in 2010 :P

Ice Age 3 broke it in summer 2009 but then Avatar broke it on January 2010 and then finally Toy Story 3 beat both in July 2010.

Considering FFH will close Phase 3 of the MCU and is directly connected to what happened on A:EG will this break the 300M mark? Considering It’s opening it a Thursday I think it can happen

And the TLK will have another 200M opening weekend? I think there’s only so much money Mexicans can spend in a 5 week stretch… so I imagine TLK will suffer a little bit.

Looking at PS I think could be the other way around.

Three days for FFH and PS looks somewhat muted. Not bad but muted and unless has a massive pick up the next couple of days is going to rely on walk-ups. Expecting $190M+ from 3-Day and $240M+ from 4-Day.

On the other hand Lion King tickets went on sale just 3 days ago and sales bode well. At my local theatre is already outselling FFH which is really crazy. Aiming to beat BATB opening.

2016-17

Dangal becomes biggest in December 2016 and Baahubali 2 beat that in April 2017.

2018-2023: nothing becomes biggest because BHB2 was ridiculous

Spider-Man 3 remains as the highest grossing opening for a Spidey title when adjusted. It adjust to $205M -massive for a pre-expansion time- and sold more tickets during its 3-Day opening than Homecoming during its 4-Day opening (again, crazy for a time when we only had a couple of IMAX and PLF, no 4D, only a dozen of VIP and less than half of screens).

Hoping for Far From Home to finally beat it with $200M-$220M 3-Day OW and a 4-Day OW close to $300M. It needs strong walk-up business but can make it.

57.1M lc OD for SM:FFH (almost $3M), 28% higher than Homecoming.

Toy Story 4 is now part of the billion club, 1.054B lc / $55M, should pass Coco by Sunday.

Annabelle 3 had strong weekdays, now up to 189.7M lc / $9.8M.

Endgame managed another 3.1M lc ($160K), total is 1.472B lc / $77M and 24.8M tickets.

And just like that we have the first year ever that two movies cross the 1 Billion Club. Can a third one be on the horizon with TLK? I don't see that happening but at least it should Cross 600-700M.

By the way, does anyone know when The Secret Life of Pets 2 will open? It's already gone from USA theaters so... what gives? Piracy will surely make a dent in this one and I don't think no one was crying for TSLOP2 to begin with¡

What else we have for the summer? Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw will surely be a big hit, it looks SUPER ridiculous but fun

Scary Tales to tell in the Dark will pull Del Toro's fans and be one of the big horror movies?

Andgry Birds 2 can surely make 200M, right?

Can Como si Fuera la Primera Vez make it to the 200M club also?

  • $270M+ 4-Day total. On par with Ragnarok although Thor faced Miguel and had holiday boost. More schools starting holidays today so it could create a bigger boost. By wednesday pretty much all the country is done.

Endgame is safe. Finish line for this one is quite open tho. $1.3B look good but $1.4B can't be called out just yet. A success anyway; ending closer to EG than IW which is massive.

Slightly ahead of Creation at the same point. Unfortunately too much competition is hurting legs.

Final update; ended its run yesterday.

Me neither. But I didn't saw Aladdin and Cap Marvel over $600M and Toy Story 4 over $1B either so who knows.

August 9th. No concerns on piracy; pretty good decision by Universal. Competition would've killed it on June/July and there's nothing for families during august.

No for both.

Spidey has a minimum drop on Fri. Don't know how to read that. Range is wide open to anywhere between $260M-$280M for the 4-Day.

TS4 experiencing a harsh drop; it lost a very considerable amount of screens. It's still on track to beat both Coco and IW by tomorrow tho.
