Purple Minion

Mexico Box Office | Kongzilla repeats on top, Civil War and Abigail underperform

Quote

The BAFTA nominations leader, Fox Searchlight’s The Shape Of Water, took a bow in filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s home country Mexico this weekend — a few days after he took the Golden Globe for Best Director. Early indications have it well outperforming comps at about 61.3M pesos ($3.2M) and as exhibitors ask for authorization to add more shows. It was by far the No. 1 movie this weekend and more than doubled the No. 2 picture in the market.

SOW's PSA is over Revenant (40k vs 45k) and is over Gravity's one too (40k vs 45k). For Sunday, is stealing the biggest auditoriums from  local opener and eventually is gonna take more screens from holdovers.

A month ago i wouldn't imagined that SOW would do 70%-80% entire gross of Kong, Logan or The Last Jedi but now is a nice breakout.

JANUARY 12-14 WEEKEND. SHAPE OF WATER OPENS BIG AS HOLDOVERS HOLD WELL.

Shape of Water

Is totally understandable expect numbers overperforming forecasts for movies like Revenant or Gravity which had more screens (2,000+ screens each one) and benefited from star power of their starrings (Leonardo DiCaprio for Revenant and Sandra Bullock and George Clonney for Gravity), also they were fueled by a strong marketing campaign that included visits from their crew and/or cast like a press conference and a Q&A session with Alejandro Iñarritu and Leo DiCaprio for Revenant and Alfonso Cuarón appearing everywhere, even with a comedian youtuber on a video blog to draw young audiences. Finally, both benefited from other formats like IMAX, 3D and 4D.

But now, see a indie movie with a sub-$20M budget, with no star power, a B-15 rating, a marketing campaign practically online based on the success of the movie among critics and on the Awards Season buzz and that on its US release hasn't even gone wide, grossing $62M on its opening weekend and with theatres re-scheduling showtimes to satisfy demand is simply astonishing. One of the best comparisons was Birdman, but now after three days has surpassed the entire gross of the Alejandro G. Iñarritu movie, a better one is Crimson Peak but that will be passed by friday, so we're talking about a massive breakout

Meanwhile, due to buzz upcoming for SAG awards and Oscar nominations, the movie is locked to pass $150M and could finish somewhere between $180M-$200M, anything over would require of a wom a la Coco.

Una Mujer sin Filtro

- Best debut for a local on January

- 7% behind last fall's hit: Cómo Cortar a tu Patán. May pass $100M

Insidious: The Last Key

- Very good hold, shows being less front-loaded than Insidious 3. $150M locked.

The Greatest Showman

Amazing holds, more surprising cause it's a musical. $220M+ are a safe shot.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

- Other impressive overperformer, should finish over GOTG 2 as 12th biggest hit of 2017.

Wonder

- Best hold of Top 10 for second weekend in a row. Is gonna add at least other $15M+ to the rest of its run.

Apparently the only record for The Last Jedi will be that it held IMAX screens for 6 entire weeks without sharing them with any other movie.

Darkest Hours (Universal) and Disaster Artist (Warner) are opening limited today and only available in Cineteca and Cinemex, so still no deal between Universal and Cinépolis, it may come until march as they have three strong releases

Shape of Water has grossed $103.5M ($5.46M USD) after 8 days of release and is heading towards a sub-50% drop and another weekend as No. 1.

The Commuter opens as No. 2 with a $30M+ weekend.

The other wide release of the weekend: local animation Leyenda del Charro Negro aims to a $25M weekend.

The Award Season in Mexico is beyond awful.

Only 4/9 movies nominated for Best Picture have been released: The Shape of Water, Dunkirk, Get Out and Darkest Hour.

The rest of them are released on Jan 26th (Three Billboards...), Feb 2nd (The Post and Call Me By Your Name) and Feb 16th (Lady Bird and Phantom Thread).

The point is that 6 out of 9 are distributed by Universal and 4 out of those 6 are playing right now or coming up the following weeks, so they'll lose a lot of steam by no releasing them in Cinépolis. And other thing is that Cinépolis is the only chain that does re-releases for nominated movies that already had their runs, so this time no other chance to see again Dunkirk or Get Out.

All said, the highest grosser of this season will be with no doubt: The Shape of Water, which is going for $180M+

Have Pre-Sales for Black Panther started in Mexico yet, and also how expected is it to do in Mexico in comparison to other MCU character first film?

Noup, but they should start this week. Hype is there buy marketing is very quiet, so right now everything over $270M is a good goal, second best result for a first solo only behind SM:HC.

My concern is that marketing has started very late and hype is anywhere close to Deadpool, but lack of competition and the 'B' rating are going to help, if the movie is really good then could go as high as $350M+ and even over $400M.

Disney should capitalize more the IW anticipation to build more buzz around this one.

FEBRUARY 02-04 WEEKEND. 'THE DEATH CURE' OPENS AS NO. 1 AND SHAPE OF WATER GOES FOR $250M+

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

- 9% over Scorch Trials and 67% over first MR.

- Could leg into $150M-$160M but competition is an obstacle (I'm talking to you T'Challa).

The Shape of Water
- Biggest Del Toro's hit in Mexico surpassing Pacific Rim ($201.24M). Soon will pass The Revenant ($236M) and Gravity ($243M) as biggest title from Los Tres Amigos. $250M are on table; will lose steam with BP but post-Oscar weekend can give it a boost if wins BD and/or BP.

La Leyenda del Charro Negro
Can finish over $100M but by a very small margin. Second local to cross the milestone in 2018.

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 Maze Runner: The Death Cure $59,40   $59,40 $3,20 1,1 1,1
