Mexico Box Office | With booming ER, Kongzilla reaches $27.7M and Kung Fu P4nd4 $33.1M.

Dolittle somehow made 66M and with the help of the holiday will most surely get to 150M-170M

Bad Boys continues holding well and will cross the 200M by the end of the week.

Cindy drops more than 50% and 100M is not entirely sure although I do think will cross the mark but will not get much further.

Jojo holds incredibly well (I saw it on Friday and the theater was full... loved the movie and the kid actors are great).

Salma gets the finger with Like a Boss opening to just 5.8M (as in pesos¡¡¡). Will not even get to 1M (USD) when all is said and done.

Parasite is out of the top 10, does anybody knows what is the total... unless it wins Best Picture on Sunday the 100M mark is out of reach.

Dolittle took full advantage of the Monday Bank Holiday and grossed 41.3M lc in the weekdays, becoming the 2nd movie of the year to pass the 100M lc threshold, $5.75M total. Bad Boys for Life passed the 210M lc ($11.25M) and Cindy is now up to 89M lc.

Birds of Prey opened at #1 with $4.6M, slightly below 90M lc; biggest international opening. Not a disaster but was expecting more. Bad Boys for Life still raking them pesos, $11.8M total. And Little Women dropped just 6%.

Dolittle #2 with $1.7M, decent $7.4M total. Jojo Rabbit reached $3M.

Thank God for the Oscars... without Jojo, 1917, Little Women and Parasite the first month would have been really pathetic.

Last year we already had 2 movies that opened to 100M by the 6th week now we have none, can Sonic save the first bimester??? Does anyone know how pre-sales have been?

So we will have to wait until Onward in March and it will not compare to the level that Captain Marvel achieved last year so Mulan will have to save the first trimester by her own... haha

Great win for Parasite really. Was very happy that happened on Sunday

Huh? The first 100M opener last year was Captain Marvel in March.

Edit: ignore this post

Do you have any top 5 asian films in mexico? I wonder which place parasite could get

Actually no, I asked the same thing not only for Asian films but also for foreign ones (of course outside USA). I think someone said Parasite will be the top one without considering Dragon Ball franchise of course. Not sure how much Crouching Tigger, Hidden Dragon gross. Even Train to Busan (one of the latest Asian hits) only grossed about 20M

Weekend estimates!

  • Sonic becomes the first hundred-million-plus opener of the year with $6.7M (about 125M lc). How high can it go?
  • Another remake, another million: The Grudge's 2020 version opened to $1.05M.
  • The Gentlemen, on the other hand, only opened to $0.6M. No surprises.
  • Birds of Prey total is now $7.9M (close to 150M lc), still the #1 OS market.
  • Bad Boys for Life reached $12.3M, Dolittle $8.7M and 1917 $5.4M.

Well. Sonic at least saves some face. Will it have kiddie legs and get to 300M? Weekdays will be hit hard due to the lack of holidays but the weekend should be interesting without competition for the next two weeks.

Parasite increases a great 300% from last weekend and in it's 8th week has it's biggest weekend yet with 118M total. 150M is not out of the question which is really outstanding for a movie that opened with 6M (¡¡¡¡). I don't remember a movie with such a great performance (in recent years at least).

Next week we have only small films and Harrison Ford trying to be relevant for a few more years with The Call of the Wild, can it get to 20M?

How do you think The Invisible Man will fare? Can it open at 30 or 40M? It looks really intense.

FEBRUARY 14TH-16TH WEEKEND. SONIC SPEEDS UP TOWARDS THE HIGHEST OPENING OF THE YEAR AND HIGHEST FOR A VIDEOGAME ADAPTATION. BIRDS OF PREY RUNS BELOW DARK PHOENIX AND PARASITE HAS A MASSIVE SURGE POST-OSCAR WINS.

Sonic the Hedgehog

- Opens 53.4% above past summer’s Detective Pikachu and 62.5% over last February’s 4-Day opener Alita: Battle Angel.

- First $100M+ opener of the year and highest number for a videogame adaptation.

- The answer of its success? Effective marketing campaign in traditional media and social media + Jim Carrey.

Birds of Prey

- 6.5% below Dark Phoenix at the same point of release although this one had a better second weekend drop.

- Shall cross $200M but it’s still quite an underwhelming result. Lowest result for a DC live-action production since 2011’s Green Lantern.

The Grudge

- Opens less than half of Rings and below last year’s Happy Death 2U. Weak opening. Will fade quickly.

Parasite

- Bigger jump percentage-wise than Green Book –comparing its post-Oscar weekends- last year and the biggest post-Oscar weekend in lc.

- Only the third Best Picture winner of the century after Return of the King and The Shape of Water to collect over $100M lc. Fifth overall after Titanic, Shape of Water, Return of the King and Gladiator.

-Now, it’s tricky to say if it’s the highest grossing non-English speaking, non-Spanish speaking movie ever because ahead there’s a Dragon Ball title. Although all shows of Dragon Ball: Broly were dubbed while all shows for Parasite were subtitled. Anyway, massive result for a foreign title that only had subtitled shows.

Jojo Rabbit

-Amid Parasite’s craziness this one quietly also has had a wonderful run now with a 5.5x multi –and counting- from its opening weekend without any sort of expansion. This one also had subtitled shows only.

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 Sonic The Hedgehog $128.1   $128.1 $6.90 2.2 2.2

10 Bad Boys For Life $4.6 -59,29% $230.8 $12.24 84.6K 4.2

This Friday opens: The Call of the Wild, You Die, Sadako, Just Mercy, Waves, Kraben Rahu, Love Me Not, Dos Veces Tú, Flotten and Honeyland.

I'm noticing that for some reason studios have stopped from reporting previews and limited openings. Warner didn't reported Birds of Prey's Thu night previews and rolled them straight to weekend gross. Zima (local) was even worst hiding The Gentleman's gross of its limited one-week run before this weekend's expansion so the actual number is even lower.

In the Domestic market they have done for a very long time (more than 10 year's I think)

There is ego but also there is a large part of the audience that is influenced by how successful a movie is to decide if they go see it in theater are not (using popularity has a audience judgment of what to see), so it is important for a studio to present there movies as a winner instead of a looser.

To do so they massage down budget, the massage OW up, so the press surrounding it has a positive vibe.

FEBRUARY 21ST-23RD WEEKEND. SONIC EXCEEDS THE CALL OF THE WILD AND REPEATS ON TOP. BIRDS OF PREY STRUGGLES BUT IS ABOUT TO PASS DARK PHOENIX. PARASITE HOLDS STRONG IN ITS 10TH WEEKEND.

Sonic The Hedgehog

- Already surpassed Detective Pikachu. With no competition next week it should gross $300M+ when is all said and done.

The Call of the Wild

- Right in between A Dog’s Way Home ($28M) and A Dog’s Journey ($26M). It’ll be luck to surpass $70M.

Birds of Prey

- It shall pass Dark Phoenix by Friday so it won’t be the worst result for a Marvel/DC ive-action of the past years and it’ll be comfortably ahead by about $30M lc.

Parasite

- Second best 9th weekend ever only below Avatar’s. Wasn’t mentioned but its past frame was the biggest 8th weekend ever. It’s about to cross a 15x multi from its opening weekend.

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
