Mexico Box Office | Frozen Empire spooks with $2.7M OW; Kung Fu P4nd4 reaches $22.8M, Dune 2 crosses $10M.

As per Canacine's numbers Sonic got to 230M and will pass Bad Boys Life over the week to become the number one movie of the year.

Birds of Prey continues stumbling but will at least get to 200M, a bad number when all things are considered. Wonder Woman will have to really devilered in June

Parasite falls against the Post-Oscar surge but is still on track for 150M. I already have it pre-ordered in iTunes

With good WOM The Call of the Wild can probably get to 100M... but it will be hit hard in two weeks by the Pixar movie.

Weekend estimates!

Deadline reports that The Invisible Man conjured a No. 2 start from 929 with $1.85M (over Get Out and Don’t Breathe). Does that mean, Sonic three-peated at #1? Update: Screendaily confirms that yes it did with $2.3M! Total is now a fab $15.7M.

Birds of Pray stalls at $10.2M, Bad Boys for Life about to end with $12.5M and Call of the Wild reached $3M.

FEBRUARY 28TH-MARCH 1ST WEEKEND. SONIC EDGES $300M LC AND NOW IS THE HIGHEST GROSSER OF THE YEAR. INVISIBLE MAN OPENS OK. GODÍNEZ FORMULA FLOPS.

Sonic The Hedgehog

- Highest grosser of the year so far. It’s been performing similarly to last year’s How To Train Your Dragon 3 –which ended up north $400M lc- but late legs won’t be as strong due to Onward opening this weekend. Still going above titles of big franchises such as Hobbs & Shaw.

The Invisible Man

- 12.9% below 2018’s A Quiet Place and nearly 60% over last year’s Happy Death 2U. Already above lifetime runs of Us and Get Out.

Parasite

- Third movie in the last 12 months and fourth since 2017 to spend 9+ weeks in the weekend Top 10.

What's the buzz on Onwards (Unidos)? Can it reach Inside Out levels, or more like the average Pixar movie?

It feels like if it's locked to open under Sonic which is a bit weird. Buzz just doesn't feel here. It'll be up to wom.

MARCH 6TH-8TH WEEKEND. PIXAR TOUCHES 10-YEAR LOW WITH ONWARD’S OPENING. INVISIBLE MAN ADVANCES OVER SONIC. PARASITE SPENDS ITS 10TH WEEKEND IN THE TOP 10.

Onward

- Lowest opening for Pixar in lc since The Good Dinosaur and the lowest in admissions since Up.

- Comps aren’t really helpful but if anything sub-$200M is possible. Good Dinosaur enjoyed of holidays that fueled its legs but this one has to wait another month and face Mulan so won’t leg as well.

- $150M-$160M could happen which would mean the lowest result –unadjusted- for Pixar since Cars (2006). By adjusting figures this would be the worst result of the century for Pixar and that’s only because there are no figures for pre-2000 titles.

The Invisible Man

- Better hold than A Quiet Place second frame but it’ll face the sequel of that one next week so is going to end near $120M after it finished its run.

Sonic The Hedgehog

- It’s running under last year’s Hidden World in overall gross but slightly over in weekend gross. It has a holiday in advantage and no competition until Mulan so expect it to finish with $380M.

Parasite

- First title since Coco to spend 10 weeks –although no consecutive- at the Top 10. Its multi from 5-Day opening is 16.2x.

Jojo Rabbit

- Another successful crowd-pleaser. It started with 480 screens; it never went beyond 700 and still has a 7x multi from its opening weekend.

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 Onward $57.2   $57.2 $2.84 922K 922K

3 Sonic The Hedgehog $21.4 -51,47% $330.3 $17.34 416.2K 6.3
4 The Call of the Wild $9.5 -44,76% $72.8 $3.74 161.5K 1.3
5 Malasaña 32 $8.5   $8.5 $422K 154.8K 154.8K
6 La Rebelión de los Godínez $6.9 -42,01% $25.3 $1.27 121.5K 485.7K
7 Birds Of Prey $4.9 -51,48% $209 $11.04 86.5K 3.7
8 Parasite $3.2 -42,85% $151.2 $7.91 41.7K 2.2
9 Loco Por Ti $2.6 -55,93% $66.8 $3.50 45.3K 1.2
10 Jojo Rabbit $2.5 -32,43% $91.8 $4.82 31.2K 1.2

This Friday opens: Bloodshot, Veinteañera Divorciada y Fantástica, My Spy, Ema, Downhill and Maiden.

Well... what a terrible result for Onward. Not sure if it was lack of buzz, the Coronavirus or the 8/9M... but this was not good at all.

Will A Quiet Place Part II and Mulan suffer the same fate? Considering some movies are moving out of April not sure the March ones will deliver the big bucks if this situation continues spreading.

Do you think the May ones will move or not? Considering some countries are locking down and America is basically only starting I think we will have the greater impact during the month of April. Let's hope is not so complicated but damn this is not a good year at all.

I think it was a mix of the lack of interest and the events of March 8th and 9th. COVID-19 hasn't had any effect... yet.

And I'm not sure if it's just me or something else but people is not in the mood to go to the cinema right now, like there's more stuff going on around and there's no appeal or rush to watch something specific.

And so... it is here.

A Quiet Place Part II out of the calendar worldwide.

Fast and Furious 9 moves to 2021¡

Mulan and Black Widow should be in the horizon soon as USA prepares to avoid gatherings and concentrations specially in California and NY
