AUGUST 17-19 WEEKEND. MEG REPEATS ON TOP AS IT KEEPS OVERPERFORMING; DECENT OPENING FOR EQUALIZER 2 AND MEH FOR HERE WE GO AGAIN.

The Meg

- Running 22.06% behind San Andreas and 41.81% ahead of Rampage at the same point of release. Aims to $360M+ by the end of its run

- It doesn’t have competition but its screen count (2,290) will see a big reduction given upcoming special events (Grease and MCU re-releases) and releases and also will lose audience as kids and teens are incorporating to school.

The Equalizer 2

- Opening 63.36% above Sicario: Day of the Soldado on past july and 33.87% ahead of first Equalizer. Should come close to $70M+, so… good numbers but nothing spectacular.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

- Low screen and theater count, it affected it badly but it could be another Christopher Robin and show strong legs the upcoming weeks.

Haven't seen a drop like Christopher Robin's in ages!!! Disney = poca fe.

Yup, was a huge mistake to give it such a small release, they thought it would be another WiT but to be honest nostalgia for Pooh is considerably big in here and it could have doubled what it's currently grossing.

I'm still baffled about the numbers for The Meg. This should be the surprise of the summer as I don't think anyone believed this would break out as it did at the beginning of the year.

Christopher Robin is a very sweet (although somewhat saccarine) movie, getting to 100 Million will be difficult.

Can "Ya Veremos" get to 200 Million? It's already out of some theaters so I don't think that will happen.

So this Weekend, nothing to see... The Spy Who Dumped Me looks funny but not HAHA funny. Teen Titans I will wait until it's on TV, Slenderman looks generic and The Happytime Murders just looks gross. The summer has indeed ended.

My thoughts for this weekend:

El Meg - 38M (just to say something as I have not make any good prediction with this one)

The Spy who Dumped Me - 22M

Slenderman: 17M (Just because Mexico LOOOOOVEEEES HORROR)

Equilizer 2: More Equal - 15M

Mamma Mia 2 - 12M

And finally, the bet will have to be paid and the Minion will enjoy his tacos al pastor

I think Slenderman can do better (not much) and Spy Who Dumped Me worst but both predictions looks reachable.

Surprisingly Teen Titans Go got the Christopher Robin treatment and went low on both screens and theatres, should be looking at low-mid teens.

Out of new releases and holdovers wouldn't shock me if Grease re-release shows up in Top 10 this weekend; since tickets went on sale theatres around me have been selling it like crazy and saw a lot of sold-outs today across the city.  At this point would shock me if doesn't make it.

And HT3 is now at $26.5M. Where's my napkin? 😃

Other news:

Slender Man: Mexico led all markets with a strong $1.4m debut.

A $1.2m number three debut in Mexico for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.

Mamma Mia 2 579,000 in Mexico for $1.9m total, higher than original in lc.

Well, I put those wrong. Slender 28M, TSWDM 15M (forgot about Teen Titans) and the Meg did 42M (only 39.1% less that's unheard of, although it's a very entertaining movie)

The Equalizer and Mamma Mia I almost nailed those.

@Carlangonz you're like a prophet¡ Grease shows in the 9th place with 5.75M. That was a very good call.

All in all, I think it is still a strong showing for late August. Next week, surely El Meg will 4peat (the first since Black Panther in February)

AUGUST 24-26 WEEKEND. MEG WINS TOPS THE CHART FOR THIRD WEEKEND IN A ROW. SLENDERMAN DOES FINE AND TEEN TITANS MEH.

The Meg

-Running 53.6% ahead of Rampage at the same point of release and 19.9% behind San Andreas showing that the movie keeps overperforming. Something interesting from both comps is that both collapsed on their third frames, the former due to Infinity War and the later because faced Jurassic World, on the other hand Meg had a hold even better than last week. Conclusion: Studios should stop over-crowding the may-july period and release more titles on august!

- Currently is looking to finish its run with at least $370M but could go as high as $390M, $400M is a long shot but september is coming loaded with many releases starting with The Nun on Sep 7 (btw tickets went on sale earlier today).

Slender Man

-Behind this year’s comps: 33% behind A Quiet Place and 51% under Insidious: The Last Key but 42% above Hereditary and on par with Winchester. Already surpassed totals for Jigsaw and Happy Death Day although the last two are useless since one was C rating and the other one was limited.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

-47% behind The Emoji Movie and this week should pass Ninjago’s total. Meh performance, might develop legs but don’t see it in a Christopher Robin level and Warner probably decides to pull it out from theatres in a couple of weeks.

The Spy Who Dumped Me

-16.5% behind last year’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard, should pass $40M

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 The Meg $42.80 -39,14% $322.88 $17.19 788.3K 6.34
2 Slender Man $28.18   $28.18 $1.49 552.19K 522.19K
3 Teen Titans Go! To The Movies $22.75   $22.75 $1.20 466.67K 466.67K
4 The Spy Who Dumped Me $14.97   $14.97 $794K 251.32K 251.32K
5 The Equalizer 2 $14.42 -45,37% $53.61 $2.82 244.08K 986.84K
6 Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again $10.87 -41,65% $37.24 $1.96 151.73K 551.18K
7 Ya Veremos $8.21 -48,16% $187.72 $10.01 160.46K 3.89
8 Christopher Robin $7.3 -43,41% $89.16 $4.73 143.18K 1.79
9 Grease: 40th Anniversary  $5.76   $5.76 $305K 94.7K 94.7K
10 Plan V $5.14 -57,27% $23.8 $1.25 102.81K 522.18K

Next Friday opens: Alpha, Mile 22, Ana y Bruno, Dibujando el Cielo, Tiempo Compartido, No Dormirás and The Insult

LOL, Disney knows their shit; besides the current re-release of MCU titles they're planning a Coco re-release for October to celebrate Dia de Muertos and the anniversary of the film's release

Why will they re-release the MCU films in Mexico? Because of the 10th anniversary? Good for Coco for that re-release. That film deserves US$1B but getting US$800M worldwide is also excellent especially for an original film.

Yup, 10th anniversary celebration. They're showing 16 titles, the only missing ones are Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor and Ant-Man and the Wasp. Three movies per weekend, only a handful of theatres (mid 100s) and one show per day.

I've already purchased my tickets for The Nun in Imax for Friday the 7th (first horror movie I will ever see in Imax, that's strange). I'm thinking at least 130M for opening weekend as we haven't had any good horror movie in a long time and this one has Bichir's Power (hahaha).

For this weekend I expect:

1. El Meg (4peating) with anything between 25-28M

2. Mile 22 probably can get to 18M

3. Alpha with something like 14-15M

4. Slenderman with 12M
