SEPTEMBER 07-09 WEEKEND. THE NUN BREAKS HORROR, MONTH AND RATING RECORDS. THE MEG REFUSES TO LOSE ITS SHOT TO $400M

The Nun

Let’s do a quick recap of the most important records that Warner’s new hit broke this weekend:

Highest opening for a horror title beating last year’s It by 9.06%

Highest opening for a september release, also beating It

- Biggest opening for a Rated B-15 title, another record that belonged to Pennywise and The Losers

- New high opening for The Conjuring franchise beating The Conjuring 2 by a whopping 44.05%

- First horror movie to open north of $200M and second highest opening for a Warner film only behind DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Valak isn’t looking to direct competition at least for a weekend but it’ll do lose screens to a local opener, then comes Predator on 21 and should be an interesting comp. Finally, should make over $420M+ by the time October begins and the Venom-Halloween combo demolish it.

The Meg

- Going as expected on its way to $400M, keeps tracking to finish o/u.

Nun update from Deadline:

Top Friday grosses were as follows: Mexico: $1.1m, rank No. 1, with 64% share of the Top 5 pics. Cume to date is $14.8M and it’s the best market for The Nun given Bichir’s stardom in the territory.

$20.9M friday gross aiming $75M-$80M weekend. $283M cume, surprisingly poor weekdays.

So how is everyone? I was on vacations last week so couldn't really follow the Box Office. The Nun did amazing in the first weekend but freefall this weekend due to bad word-of-mount (yeah... it's not good). As @Carlangonz said, this will not reach 500 million. I believe even 450M will be hard to get.

Other than that Alpha may join the 100M club (slim chance but still) and El Dia de la Union was met with a collective "meh"

So, The Predator and Crazy Rich Asians? What do you think? 25M, 15M respectively?

I'm dying to see Roma. Not sure when will it be available in Mexico (in a more mainstream way I mean). Do you think this will finally give Mexico the Oscar for Best Foreign Movie?

SEPTEMBER 14-16 WEEKEND. THE NUN FALLS APART ON SECOND WEEKEND; GOOD NUMBERS FOR JOHNNY ENGLISH. COULD ALPHA REACH $100M?

The Nun

-Biggest drop for the franchise; currently running 13.6% behind It and 10.3% above The Conjuring 2 at the same point of release.

- Once again, it had a low internal multi which added to weak weekdays and that drop confirms bad wom. With upcoming release it’ll lose audiences (Predator) and screens (Crazy Rich Asians, Simple Favor) but still should pass $400M and finish between $410M-$420M

Alpha

- Those legs! Impressive multi, it stands a good shot for $100M. Mexicans showing up again for dogs.

It's good to have you back, hope you enjoyed your vacations ;)

Yeah, those Nun numbers could've been even more shocking, i can't even imagine how much more could've done with better quality. Anyway, i think it's a good sign for what we might see next year when Course of Llorona comes, could break some records if good.

No words for El Día de La Unión, Kuno Becker should make himself a "limpia".

Maybe more for Predator, and seems spot on for CRA.

Haven't heard anything about theatrical release date for Roma, but i do know it'll have a proper release, just hope won't be a very limited release. And yeah, I'm curious to watch Shoplifters and Cold War but this year seems to be for Mexico.

Thank you @Carlangonz it was a very nice, sad I didn't have more vacation days¡

The Nun will get to 420M but it is really a wasted opportunity there. Yes, la Llorona will be a hit here if it's done well

So the Predator at 35M? I have seen a lot of publicity but not hearing so much buzz

What do you think about Venom? About 80-90M? I'm not so sure I want to see it. It does not look that bad but...

Yup, high 20s-low 30s for Predator. Should draw audience at least for its opening.

Way more for Venom, it's a very popular character, seeing something as high as mid 100s.

This fall and winter are going to be interesting: Venom and Halloween should have at least monstrous openings. Bohemian Rhapsody is looking to a possible break-out, Wreck it Ralph also aims to grow from its predecessor and FB2 is going to be fine, we'll see if Hogwarts and Dumbledore can help it.

The market is yearning for a good animated movie, after HT3. Wreck It Ralph should do really well.

La bruja de Catemaco forecasts: FB2 < FB.

The only obstacle i see for WiR2 is that it opens a week before Grinch, which by the way is counting with Derbez powah. Yes, Eugenio is dubbing Grinch. Although i could see both movies co-existing perfectly.

Warner needs to start to work out their marketing machine if they want to cross $300M with FB2

Bigger than expected debut for The Predator, $3.2M (around 60M lc)!

The Nun is now at $20.1M after a $1.8M weekend, still best international market. Hope 400M lc is still achievable.

Crazy Rich Asians had a meh OD, #5 with less than 400K.

Meg now $20.8M; La Monja will end up kicking its scally ass.

Impressive result for Predator, we'll see if doesn't turn another Nun in terms of legs.

The Nun should pass $400M, it has 11 days totally free before Venom opens and rip its legs off.

Hahaha. I'm terrible at this.

The Predator with 60+? I did not see that coming at all. CRA was never a sure bet that's why WB basically dumped it.

Storks did 49 Million so Smallfoot let's say 50 Million. As previously mentioned we have a lack of animated movies so this definetely should do some business just to cover the market. Parents are eager for the next "big" animated movie to take the kids to

The Nun will get to 400 Million. Alpha has the 100 Million assured and we still have one Mexican movie in the Top 10

So you're going with 150+ for Venom? I think without the connection to the MCU this will suffer a little bit but yes... let's say 130-150 Million.

SEPTEMBER 21-23 WEEKEND. THE PREDATOR: AHEAD OF COVENANT BUT BEHIND PROMETHEUS. NUN CLOSE TO $400M AND A SIMPLE FAVOR PULLS THE BEST PSA OF THE WEEKEND ON LIMITED OPENING.

The Predator

-Debut ahead of expectations, starting 38.06% ahead of last year’s Alien: Covenant but 6.93% behind 2012’s Prometheus, the last comparison is quite surprising considering inflation and a smaller market back then.

- Should pass $120M but wom seems to be on the same radar as Nun, so it probably won’t develop large legs.

The Nun

-Better hold this weekend, currently runs 12.57% under It and 10.56% above The Conjuring 2 at the same point of release. Aiming to finish on a range between $415M-$425M

A Simple Favor

-Debuted at barely 112 screens, pulling the best PSA of the weekend beating the second largest (Predator) by 53%. However, it was boosted by its presence only at VIP and Platinum screens. It expands everywhere this friday.

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 The Predator $62.28   $62.28 $3.33 1.10 1.10

SEPTEMBER 28-30 WEEKEND. WARNER SCORES ANOTHER HIT WITH SMALLFOOT. PREDATOR HOLDS WELL ON SECOND PLACE AND THE NUN CROSSES $400M.

Smallfoot

- Highest opening for a WB Animation title, start 28.47% above Lego Batman and already surpassed Ninjago’s lifetime gross. Is ahead of other comps such The Emoji Movie (+52.21) and Trolls (+26.84%).

The Predator

- Running 34.62% ahead of Covenant at the same point of release. This weekend face Venom, so the drop must be way bigger than this weekend.

The Nun

- 2nd highest horror film of all time behind It and today should become 2nd highest B-15 rated title of all time surpassing Deadpool 2.

- Running 13% behind It at the same point of release, should land anywhere between mid 420’s and mid 430’s.

Well. It was a good number for Smallfoot. Although my boss's wife and kids went to see it and they didn't exactly like it. It was like... meh.

Johnny basically drop from the face of the earth but good milestones for The Nun and Alpha.

So... for Venom you're going with 150M+? I haven't heard good things about it and I bought tickets for Imax on Sunday (afternoon) and theather was basically empty so... But you are better than me at this so let's say 130M (just to be safe¡ Hahaha)

Do you have the complete boxoffice numbers for this year in Mexico? I only have the ones that are published by Canacine (this is only a hobby) but as they only publish the top 10, I cannot know of all the movies that are outside that range or where do you see the numbers (if they are published at all)?
