cannastop
Since the next Sight & Sound poll is a few months away, and because I appreciate animation (if you can't tell from my avatar) I thought I'd try to start a discussion on animated movies voted for in the poll. If I remember 2002's results correctly, there were only two animated features voted for, Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, and My Neighbor Totoro. In the 2012 poll, there was more variety. see here:https://www2.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/sightandsoundpoll2012/films#group-A Hayao Miyazaki had 4 films represented in the poll. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) (1 critic)My Neighbor Totoro (1988) (11 critics, 3 directors) Princess Mononoke (1997) (4 critics) Spirited Away (2001) (8 critics, 3 directors) Ghibli's other major director, Isao Takahata, was also represented.Grave of the Fireflies (1988) (2 critics) And for the first time, some American animated features came through too.Toy Story (1995) (4 critics) Toy Story 2 (1999) (2 critics) Toy Story 3 (2010) (1 director) WALL-E (2008) (8 critics) Up (2009) (1 critic, 1 director) If you know of any animated features in the poll that I missed, please let me know. I might have missed some obscure European animated feature, I suppose. .I think we'll see a great more variety of animated movies on 2022's list, not only because more came out since 2012, but because appreciation for animation as a medium/genre has increased. And maybe some critics will not focus as much as looking cool or sophisticated in front of their peers. After all if you only have 10 shots to influence a list, why not go with your heart? I know of some animated features not even listed here that might make my list of top 10. Edit: Alice (1988) (3 critics) this is a movie with both live-action and stop motion Tale of Tales (1979) (8 critics and 2 directors) Edited July 13, 2022 by cannastop
