chasmmi
I have decided to try and complete this list, the Max Power way... 18th Memories of Murder (KOrea) 12 Votes: 202 Points 2020 Position: 14th Looks like a lovely walk in the country... The birth of the Bong-Song connection A strong film by a strong director starring a very strong actor. Seems a good top 20 shout to me. That likely sews up 4th place for Korea. Although I would have hoped they would be closer to 10 by now. The real list we all care about: 24 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 6 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia
chasmmi
17th City of God (Brazil) 6 Votes: 203 Points 2020 Position: 10th I have seen the eyes of God, and they burn my soul with pink. Ah the film that I always confuse with Kingdom of Heaven even though they are very different. One of the plucky outsiders from last time out makes another big stab at the top 10, but this time they fall a little short. Whether this is a downward trajectory for the future remains to be seen... That adds a 16th country to the list. The real list we all care about: 24 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 6 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil
chasmmi
16th Crouching Tiger Hidden Panda (Taiwan) 10 Votes: 204 Points 2020 Position: 7th Silent Hill: Japan Ah, that film that was the breakout film for Chinese language cinema as a worldwide phenomenom To be fair, the director went on to make one of the best English language films of all time, so that is something. Maybe I will watch this one day. Taiwan... YOU JUST MADE THE LIST! The real list we all care about: 24 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 6 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan
chasmmi
15th Wild Strawberries (Sweden) 7 Votes: 213 Points 2020 Position: 80th I don't know this film, but surely that poster cannot be right That one Swedish director returns to ... Maybe I should have made a top directors list alongside the country one. This is surely the biggest climber on this list in regards to the ratio of how high the film has climbed to. going from just inside the top 100 to the top 15 is a huge jump and I cannot see anything causing as big of an impact on the business end of the list from so far down. This also brings Sweden into the top 5 and upsetting the powerhouses of Germany and Italy (potentially). The real list we all care about: 24 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 6 - South Korea 5 - Sweden 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan 4

chasmmi
14th The Handmaiden (Korea) 8 Votes: 214 Points 2020 Position: 9th She bad? Never Doubt Park Chan Wook, he makes good films My personal number 3, this film is a masterpiece and if anything was sacred would still be in the top 10 at least. Luckily for all around, it did at least manage to not fall below fucking Totoro. Is this too little too late in Korea's quest for 10? Only time will tell. chasmmi
v 13th Bicycle Thieves (Italy) 8 Votes: 215 Points 2020 Position: 23rd Bicycles? it has to be Italy Wait... this is actually just a film about chasing a bicycle? So it seems that one Italian film survived the Romapocalypse? Whereas everything else Italy has fallen to major new lows, this one rises 10 spots to almost make the top 10. This also brings Italy on par with Germany and Hong Kong and within one of Sweden. Is there an unexpected intrecciare to come? The real list we all care about: 24 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 7 - South Korea 5 - Sweden 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan

chasmmi
12th Akira (Japan) 9 Votes: 220 Points 2020 Position: 54th Aha, a film by MotorItaly Ah the film set in the 2020 Olympics I watched this one! The first 40 minutes is dull, monotonous, and nothing interesting happens. The second 40 minutes starts to get really interesting and feels like it is building to something cool. The final 40 decides it missed the drollness of the opening 40 and returns to being a bit rubbish but with added Dragonball characters. Japan continues its march to 30. I think we are at a point where if we split Japan into anime and live action, it could threaten to finish 1 and 2. The real list we all care about: 25 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 7 - South Korea 5 - Sweden 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan 3
chasmmi
11th Oldboy (Korea) 9 Votes: 222 Points 2020 Position: 8th Clearly projects as being the best prison movie ever. The film that made that one episode of Daredevil really good. Did I mention already that Park is the best Korean director and I will die on that hill? Well, it's still true and to back up that fact, this film isn't even in his top 3, it's just the most famous one that broke most into the mainstream. it is still very, very excellent though. Yet another of the previous list's top 10 falls by the wayside, albeit agonisingly close in this instance. That makes only 5 games from the first top 10 to survive into this version. chasmmi
10th High and Low (Japan) 8 Votes: 227 Points 2020 Position: 43rd The story of a tall angry man and a short scared man. Top 10 begins with a shock? I mean, Japan having more entries is not a shock, but this particular one seems a pretty unexpected rise. But at least it isn't animated eh? eh? Japan has now officially secured first place on the list, but it has long been a case of seeing just how high the number can go. The real list we all care about: 26 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 8 - South Korea 5 - Sweden 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan
chasmmi
9th Chungking Express (Hong Kong) 10 Votes: 227 Points 2020 Position: 16th A sentient glass of wine goes for a walk. Plus ten points for the song choice. I forgot that Hong Kong was a part of this again. It is possible that it is suffered even more than Italy since the last list It seems maybe the kung fu fans were overrun this year, leaving more dramatic output as the last films standing. It reaches the same level as Sweden, and moves above Italy and Germany. The real list we all care about: 26 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 8 - South Korea 5 - Sweden 5 - Hong Kong 4 - Germany 4 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan

A newly watched Kurosawa for me - which only increased my Toshiro Mifune crush. He's fantastic as a samurai but here he wears sweaters and knows how to sew. Irresistible. chasmmi
8th Ran (Japan) 9 Votes: 233 Points 2020 Position: 6th A story about the fall of the Prussian empire? That's a lot of ketchup. The first film from the previous top 10 to show up in this top 10 involves a woman with weird ...eyebrows? I don't know. Trying to work out if this is Japanese King Lear, some folktale I don't know, just something out of the mind of an eccentric Japanese director. There is only one way to truly find out and we all know I am not going to put in that 125 minutes of work. 30 is still on the table. Japan needs to score 3 of the remaining seven places to manage it. The real list we all care about: 27 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 8 - South Korea 5 - Sweden 5 - Hong Kong 4 - Germany 4 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan
chasmmi
7th Harakiri (Japan) 7 Votes: 240 Points 2020 Position: 25th This is the Samurais in samurai times type poster I expect from non-animated Japan. That's pretty much the scene I expect to be in every black and white Japanese film that hits this list. Another film new to the top 10 and another notch on the bedpost of Japanese cinema. I know I am very blase about casually saying that most of them are the same samurai film just remixed slightly, but a part of me does suspect that Kurosawa is a bit like you Kubrick, Tarantino, Hitchcock and such in that they have a way of doing things that means that if you love one film, there is a good shot that you will love everything. It's not that they are all the same, but there is a DNA that will resonate from film to film. Screw 30, Japan has a shot of being 1/3 of the list at this rate. The real list we all care about: 28 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 8 - South Korea 5 - Sweden 5 - Hong Kong 4 - Germany 4 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan
chasmmi
6th Seven Samurai (Japan) 9 Votes: 242 Points 2020 Position: 3rd But there are only four of them, and I don't think they are all samurai. Ah, the Bug's Life Premake. I think before this list even began, there were maybe 3 films that you would 100% be certain would make the top 10 and this is one of them. The most famous Japanese samurai film that spawned riffs and interpretations in multiple other nations and mediums. It is a classic and will likely never leave the top 10 of these votes. Is anything not Japan going to appear? The real list we all care about: 29 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 8 - South Korea 5 - Sweden 5 - Hong Kong 4 - Germany 4 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil 1 - Taiwan
