How the hell did Devotion get greenlit at $90m with zero stars?!

I think it's time to start factoring in inflation with regards to budgets too. $90 might not be as outrageous as you think if we knew what the studio got for it.

Nah movies like Lightyear and Strange World just looked unappealing. They would have flopped no matter what

You're not wrong, but Chapek putting the last 3 Pixar movies on Disney+ and enforcing a 30 day theatrical window for Encanto now diluted both brands.

Iger has his work cut out for him for the next two years. The Disney brand lost a lot of value under Chapek, and the numbers for Strange World prove it. That movie, as an original science fiction piece, was always a tough sell even without the rainbow elephant ithe room. Add in the Disney+ stigma, and you have yourself the next John Carter.

Disney needs to put something, anything in that Christmas 2023 slot previously reserved for Rogue Squadron. They'd be crazy to rely on an animated movie as their sole Thanksgiving and Christmas vehicle next year. At least Strange World's failure will be washed away by Avatar 2 the very next month. They have no failsafe in case Wish also bombs. Move up one of your early 2024 tentpoles there. It's not like Aquaman 2's going to be much of a threat when the DC brand is an absolute joke.

He forced Pixar movies to go straight to streaming, killing the brand.

I'd say he diluted or even damaged the brand more than he "killed" it. Regardless, work will need to be done to fix that.

Wish is celebrating Disney's 100th anniversary. They need to knock that one out of the park.

Probably more "Disney+ killed Disney Animation/Pixar movies in theaters" articles coming but truth be told, Strange World reeked of Treasure Planet 2.0 from the beginning. Guessing Disney knew it was doomed early on too between the quiet marketing campaign and "Lesser Disney" reviews.

In BOP's weekend projections they had mentioned the movie was tracking terribly among female demos. It really goes to show how much the mother/daughter audience that powers things like Frozen and Encanto to phenomenon status (and will also be among the most crucial demos for the live-action Little Mermaid) is truly important to the Disney brand. Wish should easily have better luck next Thanksgiving since it's more in their wheelhouse.

Making a period war drama doesn't come cheap. Add in COVID-induced production costs and it checks out. It's gonna end up being a pretty ugly write-off for the studio since it'll probably be lucky to hit $20M total and has presumably no overseas prospects, but the writing was on the wall for a historical war movie that was neither an awards contender or had any household names in the cast.

I worry that 2 years isn't long enough for Iger's impact to be noticeable.

Failing that, Iger and/or the board could extend. But we'll have to wait and see.
