EXCLUSIVE: After taking nearly two years to figure out his next project following his Oscar sweep at the 2020 Academy Awards, Parasite director Bong Joon Ho looks to have found his next film and is taking a certain Caped Crusader along for the ride. Sources tell deadline, Bong is in talks to write and direct an Untitled film based on Edward Ashton’s upcoming novel Mickey7 for Warner Bros. and that The Batman star Robert Pattinson is in talks to star. Bong will also produce the untitled film for his production company Offscreen alongside Dooho Choi for Kate Street Picture Company as will Plan B.

The book will be published in 1Q ’22 by St. Martin (a Macmillan imprint). While the film will be inspired by the novel, sources say given Bong’s past experiences with adaptations, his iteration of the story might ultimately may be different from novel’s.

The Warner Bros. feature marks Bong’s second deal with WarnerMedia in recent months following an HBO limited series based on Parasite currently in the works with Bong executive producing alongside Adam McKay.

As for Pattinson, this would also mark his first film he has signed on to since finishing production on the highly-anticipated The Batman. Though this will mark his first film since wrapping The Batman, Warner Bros. has already shown how much they plan to stay in business with A-lister by recently signing him to a first look deal at the studio. The Batman bows on March 4.

Bong Joon-Ho’s Sci-Fi Movie Starring Robert Pattinson In Pre-Production At UK’s Warner Bros Studios Leavesden

Quote

Bong Joon-Ho’s follow-up film to Oscar winner Parasite is currently in pre-production at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden.

Robert Pattinson, coming off The Batman, is set to star in the anticipated sci-fi film, which is due to begin shoot over the summer.

As we revealed last week, also joining are Toni ColletteMark Ruffalo and Naomi Ackie.

The untitled film is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. Bong is writing, directing and producing for his production company Offscreen, alongside Kate Street Picture Company’s Dooho Choi and Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, as part of the latter’s overall deal with Warner Bros.

The project re-teams Bong and Choi with Brad Pitt’s Plan B following their collaboration on the director’s 2017 film Okja.

The novel, which was published in February, follows Mickey7, an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

As we reported last week, the film will be inspired by the book but there may well be diversions.

The project is Bong’s first since Cannes Palme d’Or winner Parasite stormed the Oscars and shattered box office records worldwide. The filmmaker is also working on a Parasite series at HBO.
