whats the consensus of WW gross?

This is the tricky part, the VFX was just so great it make a trip to movie theater like going on a vacation, plus there are more emotional parts in the movie that may very appeal to underserved female audience. We all know how "dangerous" to mix superb visual effect and heart warming drama and I do think Avatar 2 has that potential.

Now I am still predicting a $2bn run although the chance is getting slimer and slimmer.

There is no way you're breaking even at 2x since marketing budgets don't get rolled into the number. Black Adam breaking even off theatrical revenue just isn't a thing.

No, very few big budget movies break even on just theatrical.  They always look for the marketing budget to be covered by the follow on and ancillary revenue...

And speaking of a movie that had gotten out of the flop category, it looks like Black Adam will climb over $390M WW (2x its production budget of $195M) this weekend, and officially make it to "disappointment" stage, where it will go no farther...

I actually bought Black Adam on iTunes lmao, because I never watched when it was at the movie theaters. It’s awful, but I actually kinda dig Hawkman, he was the actual highlight from that film. It follows that weird Venom trend of edgy superhero films that feel like belong to that weird early 00s craze of bad superhero films.

Nevermind simply bombing, that Rock ‘leak’ of how profitable Black Adam was is an even worst look. I’m not sure if Marvel would want The Rock around, but I could see Cavill playing Hyperion eventually. It would be hilarious if Cavill played Hyperion in Thunderbolts, but maybe too distracting.

For what it's worth, Naver breakdown does have the film being much better rated by female audience than male audience (9.29 v 8.84), so that sounds about right to me in terms of appeal.

Cavill just got himself an Amazon series (Warhammer 40K) to star in and produce, so he may be off the superhero market...

I'm looking forward to Avatar but I do agree that Cameron shouldn't be spending the next 6 years just on Avatar films. My own preference would be something that more akin to Titanic which was both spectacle and traditional at the same time.

Are people actually freaking out over this preview number? It's a 4 hour commitment on a Thursday night for a film where people who have been looking forward to it are going to plan for a quality screening. It's not like there's a rush to catch this before spoilers, it's not like there's a need to catch it before the next blockbuster release.

Relax folks. This was always going to be a long-haul track, and I think that's a very respectable preview #. What were people expecting?

Even if he ever directs any other movie than avatar, he will not get back to make movies with practical effects, in interviews he said he's not interested in this. Tho they still build lot of crazy set pieces for Avatar like most of human tech.

I have a lot of respect for Cameron's ability as a director. But I find it sad as a moviegoer that he has spent 25 years on two Avatar movies and will continue spending so much of his time on this franchise for years to come. I feel like we're missing out on some other cool stuff that Cameron might be able to come up with.

That is why I am waiting for 2nd week to finally declare if the movie is an BO disappointment. The extra positive WOM among female can even help to offset some WC effect on Sunday.

I would be fine with that. I just think that the best of Star Wars happened when Lucas allowed others to play with his sandbox. I think Avatar could benefit greatly of that. Also a lot of the ideas that felt bad back in 2009 when it comes to colonialism and the white savior trope sting even more now in an world after Black Panther, Woman King and now Wakanda Forever.

I think that Cameron giving the tools and the budget - even at a smaller scale, it’s sacrilegiously too big for their own good - to up and coming directors have their take on the Avatar world would greatly enrich the franchise. It’s too hard to top what Avatar was in 2009, and while A2 delivers in spectacle, we live in a different world now, and thankfully so.
