a year ago i wasn't sure big box office numbers would ever return.

So Avatar 2's Friday gross was 34% ahead of Rogue One's gross on the same day. Looks like it needs to average 71.5% above Rogue One's daily gross the rest of the way to go above Last Jedi's $620.18M total. I would like to see it happen!

So Avatar 2 already has a 3x multiplier just in the month of December. And it's locked into a 4x multiplier, and could be headed for 5x-5.5x range.

Still a bit scared about the drop today, but the real chance for over A1s third weekend is just crazy. 
 

Not sure what calendar anyone is looking at in Jan/Feb to say 700+ isn’t very likely at that point.

It's a better debut than Women Talking? Not that A Man Called Otto is likely to be a hit, but it's not really the kind of movie that ever flourished with a NY/LA platform release, even pre-pandemic. Stuff like Green Book or Lion didn't start out amazingly (for their time) and everyone mistakenly wrote them off after their opening weekends. The reviews for Otto also aren't great.

With a 65-70 weekend, I would totally take the bet over TGM DOM. Over Avatar first run I think would be 50/50, and I don’t think it would beat A1’s DOM total, but it’s also not out as the ceiling with a weekend like that.

It's a decent start for a movie that's clearly going nowhere awards-wise. Its numbers when it goes wide in two weeks will paint a clearer picture, though it seems to be getting a pretty notable expansion next weekend.
