Sorry to say this, but no. Streaming plus Covid has permanently trained a portion of audiences they can just wait. Long epic runs are over.

This.

Streaming has permanently changed the film industry in a way we have not seen since the coming of Television in the late 1940;s.

BTW I think this would have happened even if there was no  Covid; Covid  just speeded up the process.

People want original ideas, but with how expensive movies are these days that is impossible for studios to risk on. That's why we keep getting sequels, nostalgia flicks, remakes, and stuff based on books.

No one would take a chance on something like Star Wars these days. Lucas was lucky to be born the decade that he was.

All the cool new stuff will be the lower budget movies like John Wick, Terrifier 2, and Everything Everywhere.

Even stuff based on books is becoming less common than it used to be. The most recent big book-based franchise I can think of is Game of Thrones, and that was adapted into a TV show instead of a series of movies. We're long past the days of Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Twilight, when every bestselling novel was guaranteed a movie adaptation. Maybe you could count Dune and The Meg, but I'm hesitant to consider those "franchises" since they currently consist of a single film each.

In 20 years movie theaters may well be just like live stage theaters are today.

Movies will keep being made but some things will change. More focus on PLF screens, shorter theaterical windows, more and more nonblockbusters will be regulated to streaming.

More and more sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes which will be unbearable.

There probably are a lot of original ideas out there with the potential to breakout into something big, but the reality is just that studios won’t be willing to take a punt on something unproven and very risky.

Studio heads are massive cowards.

Absolutely will happen. There will be some surprise hit or incredibly popular new IP over the next decade that does it. The original projections for Avatar were a resounding flop so you never know.

Of course. With inflation going through the roof dethroning TFA and the first $1b is only a matter of time. Definitely before this decade is out. And historically the new top grossing film has almost always been a surprise - only GWTW and TFA weren't.

I'd add Avengers Endgame to that list of "obvious top-grossers".

Better question. Will we see 9 films do a billion dollars at again like in 2019. This year might only have mario, maybe one other.

Probably not for a very long time, at least until inflation makes $1 billion more commonplace. 2019 was incredibly stacked thanks to Disney deciding to drop all their biggest blockbusters in succession. The number of remaining franchises that can guarantee a gross over $1 billion are pretty low now.

Reading the forums, one might get the impression some participants are even bigger cowards. It's true, Studios are reluctant about spending big bucks on unproven properties / films. But sometimes it does happen. How does the forum react? "how could they spent so much money on this?! it will flop..."

Exactly. This sums it up nicely. I'd add to that the fact that when movies like Jaws, ANH, ET, Indy, Ghostbusters, and BTTF came out, sequels were not that common. And when they did happen, they were sequels to movies in the list I just gave. Movies WERE the social activities for a LOT of young people on Friday and Saturday nights. So they went to see what was hot at that time.

I honestly don't think we will ever see another E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in our lifetimes. A $10M budgeted small and intimate children's film that mostly takes place in a regular middle class house becoming the highest grossing movie of all time? In today's time that concept would be a direct-to-streaming film.

Special effects extravaganzas with an epic scale and a lot of action like Avatar and Star Wars are more likely. Dare I say a new Titanic is more likely than a new E.T. (Idk why Titanic hasn't been mentioned in this thread).
