The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread

This is what November looks like now:

11/3: nada

11/10: The Marvels, Journey to Bethlehem, The Holdovers (wide expansion)

11/17: Hunger Games, Trolls, Thanksgiving, Next Goal Wins

11/22: Wish, Napoleon

Honestly, if something moved to that now empty first weekend, this would look like a very well-balanced month.

Continues to be steady. With how it's improving steadily, I think $2.5M-$3.0M is the target range.

Equalizer 3, Thursday previews T-7, southern Ontario

Total sales:  179

New Sales: 29

Growth from yesterday: 19%

Theatre Count:  51

Showtimes:  163

Tickets per showtime: 1.098

Coverage Radius: 143km

Regional comp

0.565x Blue Beetle for $1.9M

1.356x Gran Turismo* for $1.7M

*I'm using Jats estimate from twitter this morning of $1.25M for GT.

It fell against BB, which had a big jump during this period.

I still feel that this should have a strong finish that keeps it above $2M, but we'll see how things go.

Last post, I promise:

Angel Studios' next nationwide theatrical release, The Shift, opens December 1. Don't think it's been officially announced anywhere, but AMC has the date listed on their site.

And I'm sure there won't be any controversy around this one... surely... maybe...

Interesting - this was originally listed Dec 23/Jan 24 a few months ago, so they've decided to go for their earliest planned date, seeing the fall 23 slips for big movies...

Thanks for the date update!

Exact presale numbers later but I can already say that I have to lift my weekend prediction for Gran Turismo. Yesterday my guess was 15M because of its Thursday and Friday presales but I didn't price in the National Cinema Sunday enough.
Due to the post of @across the Jat verse I had a short look at the Sunday of GT in my theaters and it looks way better than the Friday. I mean I expected better numbers than on Friday but not so much better.

Bottoms appears to be doing quite well in its limited release in 10 theatres. It was selling out shows left and right last night and sales are brisk for the rest of the weekend.

with 99% critic score on RT, this could build nicely into September. Who would have thought platforming an R rated comedy would be a good strategy, but it appears it might work here. Had they gone full wide release this weekend without most people knowing what the film is, it would have done decent numbers but have been quickly forgotten. With this strategy it’s starting to build quite a bit of buzz on social media that should propel it in the weeks ahead. Expanding a little on the long weekend next weekend will certainly help.

The effort to do this each week must be insane, if it hasn't been said already then it's very much appreciated. Just wondered if there was an issue with the PLF/IMAX columns, looks like maybe IMAX is showing the 3D numbers and PLF is showing the IMAX numbers, with total PLF missing?

That is a horrific showtime drop for The Last Voyage, but not a shock 😉

Minneapolis-St. Paul Area Previews: (numbers taken at around 4 PM CST as usual)

Gran Turismo (T-4):

Day: T-4 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 15 theaters 60 30 73 11644 0.68

Comps:

0.31x Blue Beetle- $1.02 Million

0.38x Haunted Mansion (just Thursday)- $1.17 Million

Not great but it's all about these last few days, interested to see if good WOM from the EA shows shows up in these sales.

The Equalizer (T-11):

Day: T-11 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 16 theaters 75 59 59 13946 0.42

I don't have great comps for this, but I tracked The Woman King last year and I think it might be a decent comp at that point of time (T-4 on). Don't really wanna compare this with the huge summer blockbusters

Minneapolis-St. Paul Area Previews (Numbers taken yesterday)

The Equalizer (T-7):

Day: T-7 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 18 theaters 80 35 94 14734 0.64

I'll have The Woman King comp on Sunday, best I can do (haven't tracked R-rated action movies). From the looks of it I think it'll point to around $2 million but we shall see.

Big Fat Greek Wedding (T-14):

Day: T-14 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 13 theaters 26 5 5 2808 0.18

I'll start comping with Joy Ride and Strays on Sunday, but damn if this isn't looking like yet another single-digits comedy opener.

Apologies for the day late update, (super fun but very late) school event last night!

Honestly, it’s way too crowded even still when you consider how barren things could start looking after this year… get Hunger Games out of there. Flop waiting to happen, but it might have a very small chance if it moves somewhere where it has the cal mostly to itself and if it’s any good.

Gran Turismo counted today for Sunday:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 474 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 239 (9 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 29 (8 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 37 (6 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 19 (5 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 230 (8 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 314 (8 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 1.342.

For comparison, GT had on Thursday for Friday 301 sold tickets = x4.45 plus 1 day left.
Of course GTwon't get 4-5x the money of the true Friday but the multi should still be good.
