If Nolan made a genuinely traditionally appealing OS blockbuster soon, it would probably challenge OS records. The ironic part is he never has, since Batman is actually one of the least appealing OS major Hollywood IPs.

Interstellar is not appealing?

This number is absolutely batshit crazy. She'll probably hit $570m OS by next weekend if the momentum keeps up. Unreal.

$600m+ DOM and $700m+ OS.

Batman should be more big since the character is super influential and iconic, like the Batman should do over $1.5B to get match on this character’s popularity

Spiderman’s popularity and his box office are almost on same level,Batman not, that’s the problem

The Dark knight used to be the 4th highest grossing film of all time when its release, that’s the true peak of the Batman

It's wrong to say Batman isn't appealing OS, why was Joker such a huge success or the fact in some countries like the UK, The Batman did better than the majority of the MCU films in 2022 aside from Doctor Strange and even then there wasn't much between them.

For many years, Batman would make more money in the domestic market than overseas. This was even true with BB and TDK, so it wasn’t just a case of the old days of 25+ years ago when overseas markets were more limited.

But even in 1989, there was another movie (Indiana Jones 3) that kind of showed how much Batman skewed to the domestic market.

Batman 89 made $251M domestic and $160M overseas.

Indy 3 made $197M domestic and $277M overseas.

Batman is very popular overseas...TDK and TDKR both did $533m and $635m OS fifteen, and eleven years ago.

Before the Avengers hit and Marvel really took off, the only characters that were consistently more popular overseas than Batman were Potter, Sparrow, and Baggins. Spider-Man was a little more popular, but not by too much.

Haunted Mansion never stood a chance OS. The leads are unknown (Owen Wilson is the only name they could sell but he is a side character, and Leto is hidden in a bunch of CGI), the director isn't a name either and the visuals aren't striking or distinctive enough.

It also has the issue of not being kid friendly enough for kids and not adult enough for adults. OS auds were always gonna reject it.

I have a four year old and a 7 year old and they both said they didn't want to see it because the trailer was too scary for them

Based solely on this weekend alone here's where the ultimate Domestic grosses are tracking towards:

Barbie - $567M

Oppenheimer - $279M

Sound of Freedom - $183M

Mission Impossible 7 - $163M

Dial of Destiny - $177M

Elemental - $153M

Insidious: Red Door - $84M

Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse - $382M

The fact that Mission is only going to do slightly more than NTTD domestically tells you how much Par blew it. And I am a NTTD lover and defender but Mission should have cakewalked to 200 at least.

TDK made 533 domestic and 468 overseas. Pretty unusual to have a bigger domestic total in modern times, but it was still the case with Batman as recently as 2008.

But TDK did help transform the Batman franchise into a bigger deal overseas. None of the Batman movies before 2008 made it above $167M in overseas markets. Suddenly TDK made it to $468M, a huge jump.

And GTA 6 will probably do $1B the day it's released. Part of that is logistics + cost though.

Game sales  aren't comparable to box office though. For one thing, a single game is like $60-70 and that's not including DLCs.

It’s not wrong at all. Round up the modern A tier Hollywood IPs and you will see Batman is easily near the bottom of that list in OS pull. TDKR barely beats Interstellar and Inceptions OS, when it really should have crushed those. That says it all. Joker is not a “Batman” film for the record. It’s its own thing.

Joker isn’t a Batman movie but it’s literally Batman’s main villain and Batman related. I think negating what Joker did because it wasn’t a Batman solo film… is a bit of a reach. It’s clear as day if Batman is quality with no negative preceding factors it’s a constant Billion dollar movie contender. Nolan doing one more Bale Dark Knight movie probably pushes 1.5 billion. This is also without Batman being connected to a mega game changing movie universe franchise. TLDR- Batman has overseas pull and can probably go higher depending on the movie and who’s involved and the landscape surrounding it.
