Coco | Pixar / Lee Unkrich | Now playing | #1 all-time in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Coco still amazes Mexico.

On sunday had a cume of 930,33M pesos ($49,95M) and 19,69 tickets sold,

By tomorrow (thursday) they are predicting it will reach the 20 million tickets (1st movie ever reaching that mark in Mexico)

By next monday they are predicting it will reach the 1B pesos ($53,74M) (1st movie ever reaching that mark in Mexico)

It's already #1 all time in Mexico in tickets sold and box office (pesos).

It's last target should be being #1 in box office (dolars).

This is the top-10 movies in Mexico in $.

Coco would be 3rd by monday. And will be only $8M away to #1 (The Avengers). $8M at today's ER are 149M pesos. It's gonna make 1000-930=70 million pesos this week (mon-sun).

1 The Avengers (2012) $17,439,946 28.2% $61,748,523
2 Toy Story 3 $15,088,275 25.4% $59,382,044
3 Furious 7 $14,344,048 27.8% $51,682,039
4 Avengers: Age of Ultron $18,689,287 36.7% $50,940,433
5 Iron Man 3 $17,067,467 35.1% $48,566,365
6 Despicable Me 2 $14,878,750 31.2% $47,702,364
7 Ice Age: Continental Drift $11,462,936 24.5% $46,845,581
8 Maleficent $14,047,330 30.4% $46,172,590
9 Instructions Not Included $11,578,515 25.1% $46,103,013
10 Avatar $4,998,010 11.3% $44,229,043

I bet Coco can get all the #1 records in Mexico. Not bad at all.

And it opens tomorrow in China. Will se how it performs there. Not big opposition there, since JL is making weak numbers.

Very bad news from China.

Coco could make only $1M OD.

Well, the Chinese market is wildly unpredictable, right? with good WOM a low opener can have a very leggy run in China. It is just that the film this happens to (Zootopia, Dangal) have the mass appeal that Pixar films often can't deliver. Pixar has never done well in China, there's a clear disconnect between Chinese audiences and these films for some reason. The box office success of pixar films never seemed to rely on China.

I think this could change somewhat with Coco, as I think it will have relatively good WOM in China, the best it can hope for is a Zootopia type of run (on a much smaller scale), but that really needs a perfect storm which seems uncertain for Coco, we'll see in the next few days. If that doesn't happen, and Coco has a Inside out kind of performance in China, that's fine too, that's kind of the expectation... No disappointment without high exceptions...
