DAJK Posted September 29 Posted September 29 I did think the finale sequence where Roz’s “creators” come for her and attack the island was a little undercooked, and honestly felt like a dollar-store version of the finale of Tarzan (which I thought did that plot beat a lot better). That being said, this singular criticism hardly negated my enjoyment of this movie. It’s charming, lovely, is mature without being preachy, and the animation is lovely. I thought it would make me cry and it didn’t, but I was definitely feeling all the emotions during the scenes that @The Wild Eric already mentioned. I’m not sure whether I would put it ahead of Inside Out 2 yet, but I have to let both films sit with me for a while. All that being said, if anyone hasn’t, go read the book Love You Forever. 1 Quote
AniNate Posted September 30 Posted September 30 (edited) On a second viewing, yes, I did fully enjoy this. With expectations adjusted for a movie in the mainstream incident-driven mold (and also choosing a theater with better presentation), it's easier to appreciate the craft and storytelling that is on display. Some of the score cues like Give Me a Boost are definitely going to go down as classic Dreamworks moments. Personally I'd say Kiss the Sky is the stronger of the Maren Morris cues. Btw I can't be the only who expected the falcon to say ARBY'S: WE HAVE THE MEATS at some point Edited September 30 by AniNate Quote

Killimano3 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Loved every part of it. My one nitpick is that the final act included a bunch of robot battles. I understand that's probably how the book went, but I kinda hate how every modern film no matter how quiet and emotional has to inevitably have its marvel action ending. But it didn't ruin the movie or anything, so I'd still give it an A. Without a doubt the best original animation in years. At least that's come out of Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks or illumination. Encanto might still be better though. Quote
WebSurfer Posted October 2 Posted October 2 (edited) I liked this movie, I’d call it a damn good time at the theater. While, I didn’t find it as emotionally impactful as the book it’s based on, there’s still so much to enjoy about it. My only gripes with the movie are that I felt Brightbills relationship with Roz could’ve been given a little more time to be fleshed out. I felt a little more invested by Finks relationship with Roz. Funnily enough, Fink doesn’t have that much of a role in the book and seems more like an afterthought, but Brightbill and Roz are given more time for their relationship to be fleshed out, and by the end it was worth being invested with them. The climax of the movie was also something that could’ve been handled better, as it all felt rushed and the villain didn’t really leave that much of an impact. Vontra was actually not in the book at all, but instead three of those Reco bots that were sent out in the movie are the ones that cause chaos during the book climax. In the book, there’s a much more defined reason for Roz to leave the island outside of the corporation just coming back to retrieve her. The pacing was also another issue, but I can respect it given how much of a story they needed to tell with the time they had. Still enjoyed it. 9/10 Edited October 2 by WebSurfer 1 Quote
narniadis Posted October 4 Posted October 4 Rare theater outing for the kiddos and we ended up with a private screening with just is 6 (lol.) Fantastic film and my daughters were just chatting up a storm about it. Will check in with my tween later after she has had time to reflect and see how she compares it with IO2 for animated films so far (she's my most verbal on this stuff), but easily one of the best films I've seen this year, and probably the last couple. lilmac Posted October 5 Posted October 5 This movie definitely brought out the feels for me, like the best of the Pixar movies. Quote
Safeno Rdz Posted October 6 Posted October 6 I know they are not from the same studios, and TWR is based on a book, but during the whole movie I was just thinking about how this could've been rewriten as a Wall-E prequel (make the main robot one of the same brand as Eve or Wall-E), put some reference here and there, and it could've fited perfectly into that universe and would've been a huge hit. AniNate Posted October 8 Posted October 8 I mean, Pixar tried the tangentially-related spinoff thing already and it didn't go well. Any kind of Wall-E universe movie should include Wall-E. I'm sure the fanfic community will embrace the idea though. Quote

If you're talking about Lightyear, it flopped for some other reasons, and I dare to say it was actually a good movie. Quote

Well whatever those "other reasons" are, it still flopped. Frankly I can't say I'd be that confident in even an actual Wall-E sequel being a huge hit in this box office climate and with a typical high Pixar budget. The timeline we're in where this is a separate entity and has the possibility to launch a franchise of its own really is the better one. Edited October 9 by AniNate Quote

wattage Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Sequel is in development. Dreamworks has to be happy with it's performance in the markets it's debuted in so far and the critical reception. Happy to hear it. Quote
XenoMorph Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Didn't blow me away, like other legendary animations, to justify a 8.5 IMDB score, but a decent movie nonetheless Quote
cinema pal Posted October 15 Posted October 15 A weird movie. So..so..so much talk about death and dying and many ways you can die and be killed, animals eating each other and then suddenly it all drowned in syrop with prey and predators living as big loving family. I get what it tries to say, but its themes exploration and tone shifts didn't really work for me. Loved first 1/3, the rest is ok. Quote
avensis Posted October 19 Posted October 19 (edited) a relevant animated film.
