*COMPLETE* BOT's Top 100 *ANIMATED* movies of all time COUNTDOWN THREAD year 2024 edition *COMPLETE*

Recommended Posts

29 people voted. 435 different movies were tallied. I will reveal the top 100 in a few hours over about a week. or faster.

The format goes like this: there are no tiebreakers. The movies will be listed one at a time based on their points they received. I will give my take on each movie, or if I don't have a take of my own, I'll find something someone else wrote that is well-written.

Now let's have fun with the countdown!

I Lost My Body (2019)

I Lost My Body’s intrigue partially stems from this uncertainty, as it keeps viewers guessing as to whether we are heading towards a tragic or triumphant climax, but also finds jolts of energy in the adrenaline-pumping run-ins the hand has with subway rats, guide dogs, pigeons or even a garbage truck compactor. The film’s incredibly fluent animation packs a vivid immediacy, but the true beauty stems from its confident mode of storytelling.

Despicable Me (2010)

The one that started it all. I guess this is considered Illumination's best. Still going as a series after 14 years. It's a good movie, and it was a pleasant surprise at the box office at the time.

Ice Age (2002)

Another Chris Meledandri franchise starter is on the list. Pretty sure this is the only one in the series that has humans in it? I just remember the Rusted Root song "Send Me On My Way". Still, Matilda did that better.

Wolf Children (2012)

Silence abounds; the wordless sequences are stunning. There are a few schmaltzy, sloppy-sappy moments, but the attention to Romantic-poetry detail is sublime. Rarely has maternity, or maturity, been shown with such poetic force on-screen.

A lot of young children, indeed more than you might expect, are routinely whipped and thrashed by mental illness. When was the last time you saw a movie about one?

Inside Out 2 (2024)

It's customary to allow movies from the list year to appear on the list. This one I find interesting. The box office performance definitely overshadowed the movie itself for me, but it's mostly a good movie. I might have some harsh things to say about it though, like it just feels like a tacked-on sequel. Still this seems like what audiences want.

Encanto (2021)

Another movie that was released after the last list was compiled. At the time I said this was as good as Zootopia. Maybe it is. I forgot to vote for it though. The soundtrack is pretty good, though of course with Lin-Manuel Miranda there is some corniness.

Only Yesterday (1991)

The only one of Studio Ghibli's Tokuma Shoten movies that was not localized by Disney (Grave of the Fireflies was not made for Tokuma Shoten). Many suspect it might be because of a point in the movie where menstrual periods are brought up in an embarrassing fashion for the girl characters. GKIDS even said that the movie had a reputation of being "untranslatable" but they localized it anyways.

As for me, I like the flashback scenes a lot more than the "present day scenes". And the flashback scenes were based on a manga but the present day scenes were original material.

An American Tail (1986)

The quality of "An American Tail" is right up there with top-drawer Disney. It features richly drawn characters, fully detailed scenes, backgrounds with realistic depth, pictures that are charming and easy on the eyes.

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

Saw this as a kid, liked it. I remember it feeling a little slow-paced, but it is still short at 76 minutes. According to Wikipedia Roger Ebert thought the opening scene with Lady as a puppy is one of the best Disney scenes ever, and I guess it's good? Don't see how it surpasses anything from Bambi though.

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022)

Pinocchio_(2022_animated_film).jpg

Saw this in theaters even though it's a Netflix joint. It was hyped up with great reviews and it won the Oscar. Maybe I didn't like it all that much because I was standing a different movie from 2022 but I still think the songs were mostly bad and the themes were too bald.
