The New Mutants | August 28, 2020 | Rumors are saying it released, but no one we know saw it

Recommended Posts

I think that streaming release is less embarrassing than having a mega bomb that makes headlines. Streaming would probably end up with decent viewership so they can spin it as success. Theatrical release is gonna bomb worse than Dark Phoenix and that one is now dragged all over the news.

Once again, the budget is supposed to be 45M, let's say Disney pays the same amount for reshoots with more action, etc as the rumors say. It will make coin, especially if it's marketed as it should be, and it will just feel very different. It won't bomb. Its budget assures that.

By the way, someone told me of a rumor that Disney wants Anya Taylor Joy in X-Force, and mentioned the Kitty Pryde film, saying she doesn't know if Anya is in it. By the way, DanielRPK has teased the Kitty Pryde film on Twitter like a few days ago, when he'd been adamant for months that everything was getting rebooted (depends if Page comes back I guess).

so 90M budget, no stars, no known Mutants. Bomb. sorry.

Just making an educated guess, we don't know how much is needed, could just be 20M, more likely lower ranger than higher range, just rumors out there that the setpieces will be made bigger and more intense, but it's still a small scale film. We'll talk about this again next year, prepare to eat crow.

Kinberg claiming there will still be reshoots was "hopeful optimistic PR Kinberg" right before Dark Phoenix's bombing weekend... everything changes when something like this happens.  It was already moving this direction, anyway...but this past weekend solidifies it: I see Disney low-key dropping this over to Hulu next year sometime...with minimal further investment.

Why are people such gluttons for punishment?

Other than the concept, there is nothing we've heard about this movie that even remotely insinuates it will be halfway decent. It's been a production disaster like "Dark Phoenix," and the execution suggests a dumpster fire.

The writing is on the wall for this project, and the only thing Disney cares about doing with it is trying to find a way to not lose even more money on it than FOX already lost. Let the FOX-Men brand die in the garbage dump it created for itself.

Several reports (from Jeff Sneider, and trades) say that the film tested well, as high as Deadpool's first screenings. Not that test screenings are always a sign your film is good or bad, Scorsese's films test terribly for example. So maybe inform yourself a little on everything surrounding the film before being an a-hole.

@Macleod Sure, the reshoots are happening, and Disney could have found a way around the contracts to dump it on Hulu or Disney + later this year, they didn't have to give it a sweet release date in April, but sure, keep making up fantasies in your mind.

The only fantasy here is that "the reshoots are happening". It's been an 18-month fantasy so far.

Until it's released in theaters, there's no guarantee it will be released in theaters. This will be Disney's "Cloverfield Paradox", a mid-budget genre film not worth the reshoots and not worth theatrical distribution.

You act as if Disney is contractually obligated to release this in theaters.

“Disney would NOT be investing money in reshoots if they did not see potential.”

Disney hasn’t done squat yet. Disney hasn’t commited to anything.

Disney was waiting to see how Dark Phoenix did before commiting. They have seen, and the chances they will sink any large amount of money into a reshoot for NM are very low.

That Disney might be contractually obligated to a theatrical release is realistic possibility, but we  just don't know, and to assume it is is  a mistake.

And if Disney does have an obligation to release, it,  look for them to spend as little money as possible on it. They will dump it, forget about  it except for what tax deductions they can get on the money they lose.

The lever of fan delusion about New Mutants is truly astounding. Fact is, good movies simply do not sit on the shelf as long as this one has.

I think what happened is that  there was a massive fight between those who wanted a R  Rated Horror Themed movie, and those who wanted a PG 13 more convention X Men movie and nobody won, and the film is a mess.

For this guy to accuse anybody else of making up fantasies in their minds is really funny.

I remember seeing some event ( from Disney ) showing all the future movies to be released ( New Mutants was there ). Sure, that doesn't mean it'll be released to theaters, but that doesn't mean they'll cancel the movie or something like that.

You can't cancal a movie that is already made...only question is what will Disney do with it.

And DP flopping  bigtime has certainly hugely lessened the chances that the Mouse is inclined to spend money on at attempt to save NM. I think it's "cut your losses,if we have to release it to theaters we will spend as little as possible on it " time at Disney as far as NM goes.
