My seat started shaking from the speakers as Elphaba started flying and I got goosebumps and it was everything I wanted it to be. Just wow.

👏 Where. 👏 Was 👏 My 👏 Technocolor 👏

Biggest issue with the movie. Didn't need to be technicolor but just...not with the usual gray sheen that's over most movies nowadays. It had great sets and costuming and everything that deserved better cinematography that could really make the colors pop. They needed the Barbie cinematographer on hand lol. It is what it is though, it still looked fine.

I loved the movie, biggest compliment is what it made me want to reread the novel and listen to the Broadway soundtrack again.

All the actors were well cast, and Erivo and Grande were great. The most important things, the singing and visuals were fantastic. It was kind of a little long, but I understand the studio likely mandated 2 films to make the most money possible, so I will blame Universal and not the crew.

It will be hard for Moana 2 to beat this as my favorite musical of the year so far.

4/5 for me.

Good

All the performances were great

Those girls can SING

Jonathan Bailey surprised me. He was definitely dashing. I liked Fiyero a lot in the musical too.

Ariana doing her 1930s singing style when she's trying to impress and a modern singing style when she's herself.

They really want to make this a prequel to the 39 film to the point they use fake flowers.

The art deco fantasy design is amazing.

Bad

It felt to me like they really drew Defying Gravity out to the detriment of the urgency of the escape.

To be honest they drew out No One Mourns the Wicked too. It just seemed weirdly constructed to get the flashbacks in.

They changed the punch line of the line about politicians in Popular and its inferior to the musical. Its not meant to be Elphaba realising Galinda's point, its meant to be Galinda getting a big laugh from the audience while also foreshadowing The Wizard being a con man who gets away with it because he's popular

This was pretty dam good. Saw the musical once 9 years ago. Certainly not a superfan. Thought the first 20 minutes was kind of rough but once it got into a groove it was great and the ending was Chef's kiss. If Cynthia is not front runner for Best actress  than I do not know what else to say.

The rare adaptation of a long-running Broadway smash hit that's better than the stage play it's based on. Director Jon M. Chu has been discussing how he saw so much potential in a movie version of Wicked due to how "cinematic" it is, and it turns out to be true: while many a movie version of a stage musical can feel too trapped by their stage origins, this in no way feels like a filmed version of a play, but a rich, magical experience that was always ready for the big screen. This is as much a spectacle as the blockbusters that were playing on movie screens when the musical opened in 2003. The ending of "Defying Gravity" before we reach "To Be Continued"....goosebumps inducing! This is how you make a movie musical, folks.

Furthermore, it's the rare movie adaptation of a musical that fully gets what made the show such a hit and why it continues to run 21 years later. The music remains delightful, and due to the magic of film technology and the expanded canvas that movies allow, the magical land of Oz makes the easy transition to celluloid (again). Those who have not seen the musical but know this world from the 1939 movie will have a blast picking up on all the references and foreshadowing for where the characters end up. Stunning production and costume designs all over. And even with the 160 minute runtime, it provides an enchanting experience that moves at a rapid clip without ever dragging.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande live up to the challenge of stepping into the incomparable shoes of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in making Elphaba and Galinda their own: Grande is a delight as the egotistical future Good Witch, and Erivo is able to convey so much emotion even without any dialogue. And as expected, both perform the songs with gusto and power. The rest of the cast is similarly charming, with Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum bringing a touch of class and Jonathan Bailey continuing to prove he is a definite star. The Idina/Kristin cameo made me smile.

I'd say that my only truly major complaint is that it feels rather incomplete due to the fact this is only the first half of the musical, but that ultimately won't matter when Part 2 arrives a year from now.

Can not stop thinking about that last 20 minutes and the way it builds through Defying Gravity to the To Be Continued Card. It sounds like some of the superfans of the musical have some quibbles with some of the editing choices  but for a casual like me who saw the play one and have not obsessed or cared much since , it worked like gangbusters.

  • The opening and ending are fabulous.
  • Stuff in the middle is good too.

I was okay with the greyish cast until I got into the theater; It's a little distracting, and some sets seemed overly lit, but it didn't break anything for me.

The two songs I had never heard ("Dancing Through Life" and "I'm Not That Girl") I found okay, but not interesting.

so there was a long stretch of time between those where I felt a little bored with the exception of "Popular".

Spoiler

"Stick with the froat. it's nice."

Ariana is having the TIME of her life and it makes Glinda so enjoyable to watch. Cynthia has to be understated beside her and I fear she'll be overlooked, and she shouldn't be, and I appreciated Boq more than I expected.

saw it for the second time today, first time in imax second time in rpx. oddly enough preferred rpx because it puts such an emphasis on sound and the seats shook during the musical numbers which made it even better.

still feel this is an absolute knockout. the last twenty minutes of the film are to me the best ending to ANY major blockbuster in maybe the last five years. textbook denouement. the reflection of her childhood self absolutely wrecks me every time. also it can’t be overstated the dance scene is just absolutely crushing and beautiful. ariana is very good but cynthia. bitch can ACT.

Part 2 intrigues me because there is scope for expansion and improvement, I've seen the show and I've always thought Act 2 was weaker than Act 1 and I think developing the Wizard and Morrible's backstory would help a lot. There is a scene in Act 2 which I will in spoilers which I think would be useful to expand:

Morrible is responsible for the twister that brought Dorothy by accident to Oz and also Nessarose's death but it's never been explained how she can cause weather to change in what is another dimension. I've always had this theory it was Morrible who brought the Wizard from Omaha to Oz and that she's the real power behind the throne

This was excellent I loved it I cried immediately once it started and barely stopped.

Ariana was transcendent as Glinda. Cynthia was masterful as Elphaba. And WHAT a surprise it was to me to see Kristin and Idina (more or less) briefly reprise their roles.

Literally my only complaint is some of the washing out of the colors by the lighting. But that's an industry-wide problem.

Been listening to the soundtrack almost nonstop. Been a while since we had a musical that feels like it will go down as an all-time classic as much as this does, especially since I'm sure Part 2 will also improve on whatever issues that people have always had with that portion of the play.

Have never seen the show, but thought this was great and I can’t stop thinking about it. Definitely going back for a rewatch.

The defying gravity sequence might be the best scene in any film this year. Goosebumps.

Part 2 will benefit from the more explicit connections to The Wizard of Oz. I could see that being a key part of the marketing campaign. I can't think of any massive moments that would justify its own film though. But I did see it 10 years ago. The ending is understated. We know how it ends we saw The Wizard of Oz.
