Accursed Arachnid!™
Elba is the worst possible choice, critically and, more importantly, commercially. It would be ridiculed until the end of time, and gross less than Johnny English. Johnny English? Less than 30m? Seriously? And not being as widely accepted does not mean it would be "ridiculed". Craig has said that the world is ready for a gay Bond, I think it's past ready for an ethnic version. But, to be perfectly honest, anyone taking over the role from Craig is going to have a hard time following him, regardless of his ethnicity or sexuality. Elba has as much a chance as any actor of his caliber to do it. I want Fass, not because he's white, but because I like him better as an actor.
The Toymaker
Craig? So what? You're quoting him like he's some sort of authority on the Bond franchise. The world is not ready for a gay Bond because that would be ridiculous, even moreso than a black Bond.

Jessie
Someone needs to learn to grow up.And someone needs to keep their political views away from bond. Ian Flemming made the character a straight white man. The only people who think he should be black are pretentious idiots like you who want to come across as politically correct.

Ozymandias
It's pretty simple. James Bond isn't black. I'm by no means racist, but it makes no sense to make James Bond black.Like, what happened if they cast a black guy as Bond, did he just wake up one morning and turned into a black guy? It just doesn't make sense to do so. I don't know about anybody else, but I don't have the ability to change my skin color. And the argument that Craig is the first blonde Bond honestly is completely irrelevant. A blonde Bond makes much more sense than a black Bond. And another argument I don't like is Nick Fury being black. At least Nick Fury was black in some comics (and was actually based off of Samuel L Jackson).Again, not racist, just using logic. I don't want skin colors of my film characters to change. I don't want a black Bond as much as I wouldn't want a white Morpheus, Blade, or Storm. They can make a movie about a black spy without naming him James Bond. Its like casting a white guy for a Blade reboot or a Chinese guy for Captain America. Its just stupid. These characters were invented a certain way. This racist talk about wanting consistency is bullshit. cheesypoofs
You're ok with the fact that one character has been portrayed by 6 different actors spanning 50 years? That is acceptable but having him be black isn't?He is a character. This series will never die, in another 50 years he will still be going. Will he be 100 years old in the film? No.To answer your question, no I can't just change the color of my skin. Then again I can't stop my self from aging and I don't suddenly look like another person altogether. No offense, but that is the lamest argument I've heard. Of course they're not going to cast a 100-year old. That makes as much sense as casting a black person. I don't know why you and others have a problem with others not wanting Bond's skin color to change. If there were talks of casting a white person in a black role, there would be a major controversy. Kvikk Lunsj
Unless the person is playing a historical figure, I could less what the skin color of the person is. Just get a good actor for the part.

If there were talks of casting a white person in a black role, there would be a major controversy. I was responding to your post. This one specifically: Like, what happened if they cast a black guy as Bond, did he just wake up one morning and turned into a black guy? It just doesn't make sense to do so. I don't know about anybody else, but I don't have the ability to change my skin color. My argument makes as much sense as yours does. What I meant was, you are just fine with completely different people portraying the same character over the span of 50 years(while never aging), but you change the color of his skin, and that is where you draw the line? And another argument I don't like is Nick Fury being black. At least Nick Fury was black in some comics (and was actually based off of Samuel L Jackson). He was white until the Ultimate line at Marvel started, then he miraculously changed color! He was white. Now he is black. They can make a movie about a black spy without naming him James Bond. So instead of having a really great actor have a chance at a great role, we would have to come up with something for him because he is black? "Sorry, Mr. Elba, this is the whites only stack of scripts. Please choose something from this stack over here, it's for black people." That is what I am hearing from some of you. Gopher
Nothing tangible or thematic about Bond's color or race makes him Bond. Just give us a badass British spy. Everything else doesn't matter. Then again, the internet always freaks out about trivial crap like this. Remember when Daniel Craig was supposedly not right for Bond because he had blonde hair? Conveniently, everyone shut up about that when Casino Royale came out. http://danielcraigisnotbond.com/index/ Edited October 28, 2012 by Gopher

Would you please just be quiet now, your getting tedius annoying. I'm sure Idris Elba would understand if he wasn't cast due to skin colour. Guess what, I'm black and I think casting a non-Caucasian actor to play Bond just isn't right, now quit your moaning.

Gopher
I didn't realize there was layers to what you post.Django is a freed slave and Black Dynamite is a parody of the 70s blacksploitation era. Race is essential to those characters. Bond's whiteness isn't essential to Bond. He's British and a spy for MI6. That's what all the Bond actors so far have in common. Phil in the Blank
I think if people are asked to describe Bond, the word 'white' is not likely to appear in that description.
fishstick
Nothing tangible or thematic about Bond's color or race makes him Bond. One tnagible thing makes him Bond - he is male! So fuck off feminists, Sasha Crone and other destroyers of good cinema. Bond will NOT be Starbuck`d! You cna pull that shit with a Z-list cult character but not with the mainstream icon. grey ghost
It used to be Bond could only have brown hair. Now Daniel Craig is considered one of best Bonds ever.So maybe the limits of what Bond should look like should be pushed even further. In fact I wouldn't mind a lesbian Bond at some point. There's been over 22 white male Bond movies. It's time for some experimentation.
