Maverikk
You're seeing the effects of this being a spectacle movie like I mentioned. Movies like Avatar, Star Wars, JAWS, The Dark Knight, had the spectacle aspect going for it. The thing that locked this as an opening weekend record breaker, and was just brilliant on Disney and Marvel's part, was knowing they had a great movie, and releasing it abroad the week before. That guaranteed the record was going to be broke by enough that I had no concerns calling it a lock. The quality of Avengers (seen it 3 times!) was a best case scenerio. It was easy to see that DKR never stood a chance against this. Nowhere near the family appeal. The question now remains about just how high it can go. The Dark Knight is obviously going to get passed up, and Titanic could. I don't see Avatar going down anytime soon, but who knows... If any movie could do that, this is the one. The sequel would have to be just as good to stand any chance.

lilmac
So about a 560-570mil finish for The Avengers then. Much higher. It will have $570m by mid-June and that's conservative. By then the weekends will be in the $5-8m range. Start thinking $600m.

There's a real shot of THE AVENGERS sinking the TITANIC (even with the 3D re-release), but a real uphill battle against AVATAR. But who knows? Let's hope so, if there's a movie deserving of becoming the highest grossing movie ever, it's this one.
