06 (---) ¥80,000,000 ($750,000), 0, ¥100,0000,000 ($930,000), Money Monster (Sony) NEW

64: Part 2 is positioned to open much higher than its predecessor based on pre-sales, and it's certainly the result of the first film's ongoing strong WOM/reception. Typically, when a two-part film is released six weeks apart, the first-half begins to drop-off as audiences prepare for the second-half. And with most examples, whether its poor WOM, disappointed fanbases - the second-half doesn't open, nor does it perform, as well as the first-half.

That doesn't appear to be the case with the 64 two-part film, based on the '64 (Rokuyon)' novel by Hideo Yokoyama. The first-half has developed excellent legs in recent weeks (it may even reach the ¥2 billion milestone, with a multiplier approaching 8), still very much in the Top 10, and is poised for another great hold this weekend based on pre-sales. And the second-half opening this weekend is looking to deliver with a strong debut atop the box office, possibly as high as ¥400 million.

Money Monster is only receiving a modest release by Sony, opening in just 182 locations. Its opening yesterday (Friday) was mediocre, and based on Saturday pre-sales, it's unlikely to reach the Top 5 over the weekend frame and should miss the ¥100 million mark as well.

Looks like Zootopia and Evergreen Love are holding up better than expected. Especially Evergreen Love. 64 Part 2 still has to hold up well enough against Zootopia's Sunday increase for it to keep 1st place.

What kind of drop did you expect for Evergreen Love? Almost 50% is pretty steep. Also a pretty sharp drop for Deadpool. I can't compare it with Ted because that opened over winter holidays, but even Ted 2 only dropped 30% in its second week.

On an unrelated note, does Toho release half of Japan's local films or something? I mean, here are the last several films that have won the weekend, assuming 64 wins this one:

64: Toho

Deadpool: Foreign

Zootopia: Foreign

Conan: Toho

Assassination Classroom: Toho

Doraemon: Toho

Martian: Foreign

Nobunaga Concerto: Toho

TFA: Foreign

Orange: Toho

Spectre: Foreign

Little Prince: Foreign

Mozu: Toho

Galaxy Kaidou: Toho

Toshokan Sensoi: Toho

Bakuman: Toho

Heroine Shikkaku: WB

The last ten local movies that won the weekend were all distributed by Toho.

@LMAbacus

Just because it has a 50% drop compared to the same time last week doesn't mean there will be a 50% drop overall. From what I understand, last week there was some promotion going on where the tickets for Evergreen Love were cheap. Right now I think Evergreen Love will make around ¥240m this weekend, which is about a 30% drop. I'm basing this on how close it is to Zootopia.

>64: Part 2 is set to open atop the box office charts, dethroning Deadpool and preventing Zootopia from rising back to the top as well. Its first day comes in a very impressive 41% above the first-half of the film from six weeks ago (which is still in the Top 10). If Sunday performs at a similar level, the second-half of this film is on track for a debut between ¥350-400 million. That'd be quite an impressive opening, especially for this time of year.

>Zootopia continues to hold on very well and while its weeks of increasing seem to be over, it's still posting excellent weekends holds. Expect to see it in the Top 3 for the remainder of the month (achieving at least 10 weeks in the Top 3) before Alice Through the Looking Glass andFinding Dory bring its run to an abrupt end in July.

>Evergreen Love held better than I was expecting following its inflated opening weekend last week (stage greetings), and combined with its strong weekday numbers, legs for this one may turn out to be pretty strong. If it's able to reach the ¥2 billion mark, I'm sure Shochiku will be more than happy with that result.

>Deadpool doesn't appear immune to the typical 40%+ second weekend drop that superhero films experience in the market, however, if its weekend drop does end up right at 40% or possibly under, it'll post one of the better second weekend holds for the genre. Either way, whether it ends up being frontloaded or not, it's on track to outgross all the X-Men films.

I don't think Alice 2 is going to have much of an impact, given how much it's bombed everywhere else.

Nothing on Zootopia coming up 2nd in Japan on both Saturday and Sunday, but finishing ahead of The Dark Knight for 25th place all time?

The second part doesn't really matter for this thread. The first part, well, it's slowly winding down its run, so that's to be expected.

How did it do on its opening weekend in Turkey, by the way?

07 (05) ¥69,393,600 ($649,000), -31%, ¥288,784,300 ($2.7 million), The Kodai Family (Toho) WK2
08 (---) ¥59,892,600 ($560,000), 0, ¥79,455,800 ($742,000), Money Monster (Sony) NEW
09 (07) ¥46,016,600 ($430,000), -32%, ¥1,045,849,500 ($9.7 million), If Cats Disappeared from the World (Toho) WK5
10 (10) ¥40,273,100 ($376,000), -29%, ¥6,102,530,800 ($56.2 million), Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (Toho) WK9

>64: Part 2 claims the top spot in its debut weekend, selling an impressive 282,693 admissions across 321 screens. This is a very nice 39% increase over the opening of the first-half of the film which opened six weeks ago (and is continuing to have a great run), and should lock up a total above ¥2 billion (~$20 million). And a ¥2 billion earner in the month of June is fairly uncommon, and with the first-half developing legs strong enough to get it there as well, this makes the two-part film based on Hideo Yokoyama's novel a notable success

>Zootopia remains in second place for a second weekend, once again enjoying a very strong hold, now in its eighth week of release. Disney's latest blockbuster also exceed the 5 million admission milestone over the weekend, making it the first film since Disney's own The Force Awakens from December to reach the mark so far this year.

>Evergreen Love managed to pull off an excellent second weekend hold, especially with it coming off an inflated opening weekend that was driven by strong stage greeting showings. Its weekday business is proving to be good as well, so the likelihood of the film exceeding the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone are looking good. And if it does just that, it'll be Shochiku's first film to reach the mark so far this year.

>Deadpool also had a nice second weekend hold, one that's notably stronger than the vast majority of other comic book superhero films. It'salready outgrossed all the recent X-Men films, and is well on its way on outgrossing the original trilogy as well as it, too, targeting a total above the ¥2 billion ($~$20 million) milestone.

>Money Monster delivered an unremarkable debut, selling just 45,728 admissions on 182 screens over the weekend. Sony had little confidence in the film considering its low screen count, and it appears they made the right decision by not giving it any more.

All-Time Best Multipliers (¥1 billion Earners) [1998-]

01. 33.34 - Frozen (Mar., 2014)
02. 30.37 - Spirited Away (July, 2001)
03. 26.99 - Princess Mononoke (July, 1997)
04. 26.13 - Avatar (Dec., 2009)
05. 23.21 - Departures (Sept., 2008)
06. 19.96 - Les Miserabes (Dec., 2012)
07. 16.44 - The Cat Returns (July, 2002)
08. 16.15 - The Eternal Zero (Dec., 2013)
09. 15.69 - Monsters, Inc. (Mar., 2002)
10. 15.29 - Big Hero 6 (Dec., 2014)
11. 15.25 - The Last Samurai (Dec., 2003)
12. 14.98 - Ponyo (July, 2008)
13. 14.84 - Howl's Moving Castle (Nov., 2004)
14. 14.81 - Always: Sunset on Third Street (Nov., 2005)
15. 14.65 - Zootopia (Apr., 2016) [8 Weeks in Release]

Zootopia just needs $8 million more to pass The Cat Returns to be in 7th place, so that's all but certain. Passing Les Misérables requires about $22 million more, so it's probably going to fall short of that.

This was Wednesday, when women can buy tickets for ¥1,100. A 12% increase week to week for Zootopia is pretty notable. Will it increase this weekend?

Interesting fact I noticed about the Japanese box office compared to the USA+Canada box office.

Only 23 of the top 100 movies of all time in Japan came out in 2010 or later:

http://www.kogyotsushin.com/archives/alltime/

Compared to 44 of the top 100 movies coming out 2010 or later in USA+Canada:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm

This might be attributable to Japan's recent history of low GDP growth and deflation in prices.

Ticket prices actually increased a couple of years ago, thanks to the tax increase policy. But that was the first time ticket prices changed in decades. Before that, they had stayed the same since the 80's or the 90's I think. That's why the all time list doesn't change that much.
