  • Disney 1st Pull in recovering market starts with "Avatar: The Way Of Water" bring back 1st Post-Pandemic ¥4.0B Title for the Distributor, with subsequent effort by "The Little Mermaid" then "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny". Finally, "Elemental" WOM brought some movement followed by "Haunted Mansion". Only a matter of time to know how "Wish" gonna help in 2024!
  • "John Wick: Consequences" became the only Indie Production with R15 ratings to exceed ¥1.0B, almost doubling up previous record in Franchise (Chapter III - ¥540M). Similar record by "The Equalizer 3" being ATG in the Franchise.
  • "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3" &"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" are the only CBMs exceeding ¥1.0B and ATG in their respective Franchise. "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" was closed but couldn't make it (unless Disney pump it at the end)
  • Summer wasn't particularly good for Miyazaki who missed ¥10B for "How Do You Live?" &next is the Obon Festival coming with lots of shutdowns because Typhoons all around. A little good to see "Kingdom 3: Flame Of Destiny" breaking ATG in Franchise &Japan's most loved Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" reaching the height of Franchise Peak start (3rd in Franchise)
  • 2023 started with a Hugh break-out, only to slip drop on 3rd/4th Quarters, nevertheless we shouldn't forget "ONE PIECE: FILM RED" (August 2022) &"Suzume" (November 2022), helping the 3rd/4th Quarters of 2022.
  • BO of Live-Action has improved from 2022. Keeping the market diverse without favoring only one genre while affecting the others. 
  • Non-English Film like "Paris Taxi" (¥180M), "The Wolf House" (¥75M), "Asteriod City" (¥170M) or "Pathaan" (¥45M) also not to forget "Rise, Roar &Revolt (RRR)" (¥2.4B) did well! RRR still undergoes IMAX Revival Screenings!
  • No #Barbenheimer here. But, still 2023 projected ending +5~8% ahead of 2022 (Full numbers will be out on Last Week of January 2024). All ¥1.0B Grossers will be out by the end of January 2024 while below ¥1.0B Grossers will be out on March 2024!

Godzilla -1.0 will exceed ¥5.0B on Wednesday! 

 

Seems like there is a chance of outgrossing "Kingdom III: Flame Of Destiny" (¥5.60B) for Pandemic Biggest Live-action Japanese Film!

 

 

Well, it's need to be noted that I am keeping "Arashi Anniversary 5 x 20 Record Of Memories" out which got an New Year Eve Re-release. Previously, reported ¥5.06B / 1.6M admits.

 

New Year Eve (Tracked Data) - 34,032 / 66,983 (191 TC/232 Shows) ~ 50.8% Occupancy

BOJ expect USD-JPY to reach ¥120 by the end of the 1st Quarter. Already performing better from ¥151.94 Nov (32 Years High) to ¥142 (+¥1 from yesterday accident)

These are very nice increases for -1 in Japan! It still needs a lot to go right for it, but 100m worldwide is slowly becoming a possibility.

 

International totals should be updated today on BOM.. but it’s missing like 1m from Brazil in its total which could be very important in that goal.

I am not sure the strategy that Toho is going for. Apparently their focus this round is mostly on the western country, totaling snubbing neighboring Asian countries, which are not only known for more friendly for Japanese content but monster flick.   

 

The cinema chain and moviegoers in Malaysia have been furious with the lack of progress from Toho.

Market Trends favors anime over live-action. Nothing to do with WOM, but Genre overall is relative weaker, unless some romantic just blow up like Flower Bouquet, The Last 10 Years or recent Hello Mother &Ano Hana. Though, in case of above SxF is the one underperforming but I am optimistic since I prefer late legs/holds over initial weeks numbers :)
