We're going to continue to see most of these same films for a few more weeks until more films begin to be released (see above regarding postponed films being rescheduled). But the box-office is growing, and more theaters are opening, so things may appear somewhat "normal" in about a month. "Normal" meaning regular openers each weekend and higher earnings, but I don't expect the grosses/admissions to be near normal levels until August at the earliest.

And honestly, The Real Exorcist is already performing decently well. It's definitely being helped by being the first notable release in two-months, but it's still a small film from an independent studio. And, obviously, it's not playing quite as wide as it would be and has to operate under capacity limits. I wouldn't have expected a lot more out of it if released under regular conditions.

A few news films in the Top 10 this week, two new releases and one new re-release. And the box-office continues to grow every week with strong increases. Some bigger films like Dr. Doolittle and Sonic the Hedgehog open later this month, and they might be able to post respectable numbers if things continue going this well.

Back to this weekend: Both new releases are smaller films from independent distributors, so hard to say how their debuts went, but I'd consider them at least decent under the circumstances. The Dead Don't Die, in particular, seems to have performed quite well.

The Avengers received a re-release this weekend and ranked in sixth-place. Disney may decide to re-release all of the Avenger films in the coming weeks, so it'll be interesting to see how much they add to their previous totals in the market.

Interesting weekend. I believe this is the first weekend that will begin getting the box-office back to "normal." What I've taken away from this weekend and its varying declines and increases is:

>Films that were in release prior to the shutdown, while still enjoying week-to-week increases as theaters reopen, are starting to level off a bit. The majority of theaters have reopened now, but once the remaining few do in the coming weeks, these films will probably begin to see gradual week-to-week declines as they would under normal circumstances.

Little Women debuted in second place over the weekend, grossing ¥41,215,140 ($384,000) on 30,464 admissions across 300 screens. Its 3-day total reached ¥54,151,340 ($505,000) on 40,210 admissions.

The film was the first wide release since box-office reporting resumed and since theaters began reopening five weeks ago, and while it wasn't able to open in first place (The Real Exorcist achieved its 5th-weekend at #1), this is a solid start. It's planned to expand to 340 screens as the last batch of theaters reopen in coming weeks.

>The Real Exorcist was the first notable film to open when the first theaters reopened five weeks ago, and up until this weekend, it was seeing week-to-week increases like the films that were in release prior to the shutdown, due to expanding to more theaters as they opened each week. But now that it's basically playing as wide as it can be (as of last weekend), it experienced its first (and somewhat large) drop. I expect it to see steady declines moving forward given it's mostly played under normal circumstances.

>And finally, last weekend's openers (The Dead Don't Die and Anna) were some of the first to open with most theaters being reopened, so they dropped in their second weekends as a normal release would since they've were released under normal circumstances, too.

>But lastly, as for the re-releases, I imagine they'll largely be unpredictable in their weekly performances. The 2020 release schedule is beginning to take shape, do I ultimately don't expect them to be around much longer, perhaps not longer than one or two more weeks as more and more new (or postponed) films begin to fill theater screens.

And note that when I say "normal" or "normal circumstances", that still obviously accounts for COVID-19 concerns and theaters having to operate under capacity limitations in place. "Normal" just implies the most normal the box-office has been (most theaters reopened, box-office reporting having resumed, etc.) since before the shutdown.

 

Dr. Dolittle (June 19th) and Sonic the Hedgehog (June 26th) are the next notable wide releases this month.

What's this? It's our first film to open (or earn) above ¥100 million(!) since Birds of Prey during the weekend of March 21st-22nd.

>Dolittle debuts in first place, selling 81,486 admissions over the weekend frame across a significant 707 screens, and sold 106,913 admissions over its first 3-days in release. As mentioned, this is the biggest opening in 3-months, and the debut itself isn't too bad. It's probably no less than half of what it would have opened at under regular conditions.

This was an important weekend for the box-office, having a very-wide opener( targeting a broader demographic than the other openers over the past six-weeks) succeed on this level. And the recent holdovers which also received wide/very-wide openings have been holding decently well. Let's hope the success of Dolittle and strength of the holdovers will be the prelude to a stronger box-office in the coming weeks/months.

Sonic the Hedgehog opens next weekend and will be the next big test for the box-office, so let's see if it can reach ¥150 million ($1.5 million) in its debut, or maybe even ¥200 million ($2 million) is a possibility?

this is kinda old news, but the new detective conan film (24th) was pushed to april 2021 as expected. this is the first time where they don't release a DC movie since 1997 where they started releasing them yearly since then.

First of all, thank you for the updates and infos (of course also @Corpse)!

Because we have so far no update I can only post what Corpse wrote at WOKJ on Saturday:

The battle for #1 this weekend is going to be very close between all three Hayao Miyazaki re-releases (Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke), and Rambo: Last Blood. Spirited Away has the slight edge over the rest after Saturday by about 1,500 admissions right now at the usual locations (~70% of the market), but that's not much of a lead, and the other three films are ridiculously close in admissions after it with a mere 222 admissions separating them. 

For Saturday: Spirited Away probably sold close to 40,000 admissions, while Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, and Rambo: Last Blood all sold 35,000+.

All four films listed above are on track to earn ¥100-¥125 million ($1-$1.2 million) this weekend. 

Sonic the Hedgehog, however, isn't doing very well. Perhaps not surprising though since Japanese audiences generally shun Hollywood adaptations of domestic source material. Unless Sunday provides it with a big boost, it's going to debut in 6th place (behind Dolittle's second weekend) and might miss ¥50 million ($500,000).

This weekend will become the biggest at the box-office since the last weekend in February.
 

 

I used the great mimorin-blog for the weekdays. As I learned this site shows the biggest part of the sold tickets but not all (e.g. Dolittle had on its first Saturday+Sunday ca. 55k sold tickets at mimorin and in fact it were ca. 81k) - so the weekday numbers that I mention below must be (even) higher. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday all four mentioned above films had around/mostly over 10k admissions/day according to mimorin. The top 10 had ca. 60k admissions each day (last week it were ca. 20k).

Okay, so first let me remind everyone that the Japanese market and domestic sites base their rankings in terms of weekend admissions, not revenue, and that the re-release of Spirited Away debuted in first place in admissions. Also, the re-release of Princess Mononoke came in second place in admissions, and the re-release of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind rounded out the Top 3 in admissions. All three films were re-released in 374 theaters, more than their initial theatrical release theater counts. 

So, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli managed to take the Top 3 positions, which, of course, made the headline of all the box-office related news articles this past week. But unfortunately, admission figures weren't released for any of them. But I'd estimate that Spirited Away sold around 80,000, while Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa were very close, each probably selling around 75,000. And in Nausicaa's case, it didn't have any of its weekend figures revealed (which explains the estimate*), just its cumulative total since it was re-released in limited locations a couple weeks ago (which is why its total is higher). 

>Rambo: Last Blood debuted down in fourth place in admissions, but with a higher average ticket price, managed to take the #1 spot in revenue. And unfortunately, its admissions weren't released. But since it ranked in fourth in admissions, I'd estimate it sold between 70,000-75,000 over the weekend frame since it was very close to both Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa as well.

>Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in sixth-place, selling 38,306 admissions over the weekend frame across 435 screens, and 47,433 admissions in its first three-days in release. This is a pretty disappointing result, I have to admit, but perhaps it was destined to disappoint regardless of the current circumstances as Hollywood adaptations of domestic properties typically disappoint. But also, as mentioned above by neo_wolf and Jack Sparrow, the Sonic brand wasn't ever particularly big in the market either.

>And finally, we had the re-release of Tales From Earthsea, also from Studio Ghibli (directed by Goro Miyazaki) making the Top 10 to give the studio four Top 10 films this weekend. It performed noticeably worse than the more popular Hayao Miyazaki films, but I wouldn't say it wasn't worth re-releasing or anything.

This weekend, June 27th-28th, was the biggest at the Japanese Box-Office since March 07th-08th, nearly four-months ago with the Top 10 earning ¥536 million ($5.2 million). So will we see more Studio Ghibli films receiving re-releases in the coming weeks/months? If this weekend is to go by, I'd say most definitely, at least among Hayao Miyazaki's catalog of films. A second "wave" of Studio Ghibli films could be released at the end July for sure.

Solid weekend. Nothing exciting, of course, but it remained pretty stable and Hayao Miyazaki's three classics remained strong and stayed flat/increased (securing the Top 3 positions for a second week in admissions, but also in revenue this week). If re-releases of Studio Ghibli films help theaters and keeps the box-office going for awhile, I couldn't think of a better way to manage for another month or two.

Rambo: Last Blood and Sonic the Hedgehog experienced sizable second weekend declines, but these drops would be normal under normal circumstances for these two particular films, so I'd consider them "good" in that regard.

Update: Outside Japan, I compiled $128mn. Japan as per Corpse is $249mn, which I guess is only first release. Which means $377mn total before Japan re-release.

Talk about a surprising weekend. Granted, I wasn't following the box-office going into this weekend, but when I saw From Today, It's My Turn! open so high (biggest debut of 2020, second since Star Wars), it was certainly a shocking moment. It opened how it would have under regular conditions, if not arguably even higher than what expectations would have been normally.

The film, based on the popular TV show, sold a remarkable 486,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 359 screens, and sold 605,000 admissions over its first three-days in release. It also had an excellent second weekend and exceeded ¥2 billion ($19 million+) after just 10-days, and I'll have that weekend chart posted later this evening or early tomorrow.

There's another notable debut on the next chart as well, achieving the second best debut of 2020 (just behind From Today, It's My Turn).

It feels nice to finally have the box-office looking like a box-office again!

>From Today, It's My Turn! defended its #1 position with an excellent second weekend hold, selling a further 389,000 admissions in its sophomore frame. And while that's very impressive following its big debut last week to kick-off the Summer box-office season, the fact that its 10-day total has already exceeded ¥2 billion (nearly $20 million) and 1.61 million admissions is remarkable. The Obon Festival holiday week is coming up in two weeks, so we can probably look forward to a total near ¥5 billion ($45-50 million) if it achieves another great week like this.

>The Confidence Man JP: Episode of the Princess, the second film based on the popular TV drama, settled for a second place debut, but its opening weekend was quite strong (especially its 4-day total from opening on a Thursday). The second film of the series sold 286,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 344 screens, and hit 648,000 admissions after its first four-days in release. The opening weekend is 5% higher than its predecessor, which isn't just a strong sign for any future films in the series, but also for the current state of the box-office itself to be able to support a sequel that opened higher--and will almost certainly gross more than--its predecessor. Expect a total around ¥3 billion ($25-30 million).

>The three Hayao Miyazaki re-releases continue to do well, and with Summer dailies in effect and Obon Festival coming up in two weeks, both Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away could end up grossing ¥1 billion ($10 million) in the end.
