Weekend Forecast [9/7-8]

1 (1) The Wind Rises (Toho) ¥305 million ($3.1 million) Week 8
2 (-) Space Pirate Captain Harlock (Toei) ¥165 million ($1.7 million) DEBUT
3 (2) Man of Steel (Warner Bros.) ¥150 million ($1.6 million) Week 2
4 (3) Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (Aniplex) ¥105 million ($1.1 million) Week 2
5 (5) The After-Dinner Mysteries (Toho) ¥90 million ($910,000) Week 6
6 (4) Sadako 3D Part 2 (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥80 million ($810,000) Week 2
7 (6) Monsters University (Disney) ¥75 million ($760,000) Week 10
8 (7) Star Trek Into Darkness (Paramount) ¥70 million ($710,000) Week 3
9 (8) World War Z (Toho-Towa) ¥45 million ($460,000) Week 5
10 (9) Gatchaman (Toho) ¥40 million ($410,000) Week 3

Post-Summer vacation and post-1st of the month weekend = bad drops for the holdovers (except for The Wind Rises). I'm doubting any of them will avoid a 40% drop, with the majority likely dipping 50-55%.

As for The Wind Rises, it's hard to predict it's weekend besides it achieving an incredible 8th-consecutive week in 1st place. There are a lot of factors at play this weekend, the ones mentioned above (post-summer, post-1st of the month weekend) and Miyazaki's retirement and the Venice Film Festivals awards going out this weekend, too.

As of Thursday, it's 48th day in release, it's box-office had reached ¥9.23 billion ($94.5 million) and will have seen a week-on-week (Mon-Fri) increase despite losing it's Summer vacation support.

Captain Harlock was expected to do good numbers (popular anime revival + James Cameron support) but it's ticket sales are looking weak and it will probably disappoint. I'm hoping for the best, it looks great. And with a huge budget of ¥3 billion ($30 million), it won't be recovering. Although it will still be more successful than Gatchaman (which could fall out of the Top 10 this weekend) with it's insane rumored budget of ¥6-8 billion ($60-80 million) Posted Image Whoever is allowing these recent budgets are pretty stupid and maybe out of a job, but the trend of reviving old manga/anime into big-budget live-action films was pretty popular a couple years ago.. idk.

And The Wind Rises looks like it increases for a second-consecutive week even though last week was the last of the Summer vacation and with last Sunday being a ticket discount day. It's now been atop the box-office for 8-consecutive weeks. Everything else, however, sees the effects of the post-Summer, post-discount Sunday weekend, but they'll recover next weekend with it being a 3-day Holiday weekend.

No cumulative numbers, my friend?

They usually come out on monday

Most-Consecutive Weeks at #1 (1998-)16 - Spirited Away [July 21-22 to Nov. 03-04] (2001)14 - Armageddon [Dec. 12-13 to Mar. 13-14] (1998-1999)10 - Avatar [Dec. 26-27 to Feb. 27-28] (2009-2010)9 - Howl's Moving Castle [Nov. 20-21 to Jan. 15-16] (2004-2005)9 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! [July 19-20 to Sept. 13-14] (2003)9 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets [Nov. 23-24 to Jan. 18-19] (2002-2003)9 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone [Dec. 01-02 to Jan. 26-27] (2001-2002)9 - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace [July 10-11 to Sept. 04-05] (1999)8 - The Wind Rises [July 20-21 to Sept. 07-08 so far] (2013)7 - Alice in Wonderland [Apr. 17-18 to May 29-30] (2010)7 - Hero [sept. 08-09 to Oct. 20-21] (2007)7 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King [Feb. 14-15 to Mar. 27-28] (2004)7 - Spider-Man [May 11-12 to June 22-23] (2002)6 - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides [May 21-22 to June 25-26] (2011)6 - Umizaru: The Last Message [sept. 18-19 to Oct. 23-24] (2010)6 - 20th Century Boys: The Last Chapter [Aug. 29-30 to Oct. 03-04] (2009)6 - Ponyo [July 19-20 to Aug. 23-24] (2008)6 - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe [Mar. 03-04 to Apr. 08-09] (2006)6 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire [Nov. 26-27 to Jan. 07-08] (2005-2006)6 - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith [July 09-10 to Aug. 13-14] (2005)6 - Monsters, Inc. [Mar. 09-10 to Apr. 13-14] (2002)6 - The Sixth Sense [Oct. 30-31 to Dec. 04-05] (1999)6 - The Matrix [sept. 11-12 to Oct. 16-17] (1999)The Wind Rises easily makes it 8 in a row and probably would have done so without Miyazaki's retirement announcement. The openers the past couple weeks have been quite underwhelming. Now the question is, can it make it 9-consecutive weeks? Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill, The Wolverine and Unforgiven open this upcoming holiday weekend and should do well, but The Wind Rises is still really strong and I don't think it'll slow down for a few more weeks so the openers will need to meet or exceed expectations.IF it wins a 9th-consecutive week, it may rule the box-office for the rest of the September and into early October (potentially giving it 11+ consecutive weeks on top) since the late Sept. openers (Elysium, Despicable Me 2, Like Father, Like Son, etc.) should do alright, but they're all small-mid tier films at best.

Weekend Ranking [9/7-8]

1 (1) The Wind Rises (Toho) Week 8
2 (-) Space Pirate Captain Harlock (Toei) DEBUT
3 (2) Man of Steel (Warner Bros.) Week 2
4 (4) Sadako 3D Part 2 (Kadokawa Pictures) Week 2
5 (3) Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (Aniplex) Week 2
6 (5) The After-Dinner Mysteries (Toho) Week 6
7 (6) Monsters University (Disney) Week 10
8 (7) Star Trek Into Darkness (Paramount) Week 3
9 (11) A Boy Called H (Toho) Week 5
10 (10) White House Down (Sony) Week 4
11 (9) Gatchaman (Toho) Week 3

The Wind Rises wins it's 8-consecutive week in 1st place by increasing for a second straight week. It earned ¥455,761,200 ($4.6 million) and 346,103 admissions over the weekend, increasing 34% over last weekend, which saw an increase of 6% over that previous weekend. It's eight-weekend is one of the biggest of all-time.

After 51-days in release, the film has amassed ¥9,773,190,000 ($100.2 million) and 7.88 million admissions. It's now the biggest film in 3 years, and in just a few days, it'll be the first film in 3 years to reach the ¥10 billion milestone, and the first 2D film in 5 years to do so.

Debuting in second place, Space Pirate Captain Harlock grossed a dismal ¥133,969,750 ($1.4 million) and 90,692 admissions on a whopping 578 screens. A very disappoiting number for the big-budget film, though it did manage to break a record - all-time screen count for a local film. I don't know if it's a typo or not, but 578 screens easily breaks Ponyo's 481 screen count record back in 2008. Too bad an overwhelming majority of those screens were nearly empty.

And dropping to sixth place, The After-Dinner Mysteries continues it's solid performance exceeding ¥3 billion ($31 million) with 2.6 million admissions. It may manage to overtake Midsummer Formula as the highest-grossing local-live action film of the year.

Blockbuster Showdown [2004-]
8th-Weekend Gross (%-change) - Film - 8-Week Total (%-change)

¥644.9 million (-08%) - Howl's Moving Castle - ¥15.23 billion (+18%)
¥507.1 million (-11%) - Avatar - ¥10.96 billion (+14%)

¥412.1 million (+46%) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - ¥11.56 billion (+13%) [Obon Weekend]
¥378.2 million (-26%) - Ponyo - ¥13.44 bllion (+06%)
¥251.6 million (-09%) - Toy Story 3 - ¥9.98 billion (+07%)
¥234.6 million (-18%) - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - ¥8.69 billion (+06%)
¥219.9 million (-37%) - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - ¥10.08 billion (+06%)
¥189.6 million (-33%) - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - ¥9.93 billion (+03%)
¥186.2 million (-38%) - Alice in Wonderland - ¥11.15 billion (+04%)
¥168.5 million (-15%) - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - ¥8.43 billion (+04%)
¥150.8 million (-37%) - Arrietty - ¥8.43 billion (+05%)
¥148.9 million (-28%) - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - ¥8.41 billion (+04%)
¥126.7 million (-32%) - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - ¥9.37 billion (+03%)
¥115.4 million (-40%) - The Da Vinci Code - ¥8.39 billion (+04%)
¥111.4 million (-35%) - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - ¥9.18 billion (+04%)
¥101.8 million (-48%) - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - ¥8.90 billion (+02%)

It's hard to project the rest of it's run since it'll definitely last until December or beyond into 2014, though it looks on track for maybe ¥13-14 billion ($135-145 million) and 10.5-11 million admissions, but it could certainly go higher.

It needs ¥13.71 billion to surpass The Last Samurai and break into the Top 10 Films of All-Time, which would then give Hayao Miyazaki 5 of the Top 10 films of all-time with Spirited Away (#1), Howl's Moving Castle (#3), Princess Mononoke (#5) and Ponyo (#9) currently there.

¥1 billion

The Wind Rises will exceed ¥10 billion anyday now. I expect an announcement after Wednesday (tomorrow).

MU has slowed down now that Summer vacation is over, but still may reach ¥9 billion ($92 million) and 7 million admissions. In admissions, it's only going to be about 300,000 short of Toy Story 3. And it's overall performance is very close to it's predecessor which did ¥9.37 billion and 7.6 million admissions.

The After-Dinner Mysteries becomes the 11th film this year to reach ¥3 billion.

And The Lone Ranger hits the ¥2 billion mark, giving Depp another solid hit in the market. The film will practically finish with the same total as Depp's other recent non-Pirate films.

Damn are the holdovers (except The Wind Rises) losing a lot of showtimes and being bumped to the smallest auditoriums.

Ataru will be the first (for real this time!) big threat to end The Wind Rises's eight-week run atop the box-office...maybe. The drama series did quite well and ticket sales for Saturday are pretty strong already. September is usually very kind to tv drama adaptations, so this film will likely prosper this Fall and be the top film released in Sept. and Oct.
