JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I dont think Olympics will effect too much because of time zone difference.

The Olympics shouldn't have any effect on the box office. 2008 saw no effect and I haven't seen anyone mention them.

So is there any buzz for TA in Japan? Do Japanese audiences pay attention to films that break records in other countries or does that not really matter to them?

More buzz than your normal superhero movie, but TDKR has more.

Evangelion 3.0 may just be the most anticipated film this year. 2.0 grossed 4 billion yen (almost $50 million) in 2009, doubling up on 1.0, and never played on more than 120 screens. It's been announced that 3.0 will play on over 200 screens this November, and most expectations are in the 5 billion yen ($60/65 million) range. Advance tickets go on sale July 14th.

And One piece Z???

It's funny that you mention it. In 2009, Evangelion 2.0 broke the opening psa record for a film playing on 100 or more screens. Then just 6 months later, One Piece Strong World broke that record by selling out 60% of all it's weekend showtimes (which is also a record) to gross over 1 billion yen on 190 screens in two days. For the new films, Evangelion 3.0 and One Piece Film Z, I give the advantage to Evangelion 3.0. Strong World was released during the Marineford Arc of the manga and was beyond hyped with Oda producing for the first time. Oda is producing again, but I don't think the anticipation will be quite as great. Evangelion 3.0 opens November 17th. Mid-November is a tricky release frame. The Box Office Year ends November 30th, and any film that grosses 1 billion yen or more after this date will be considered a 2013 release. It's undecided which year Evangelion 3.0 will end up in right now.One Piece Film Z opens December 15th. Interestingly, it's up against The Hobbit's opening weekend. I don't believe there has ever been a weekend where two openers grossed over 1 billion yen, but this one has the potential for that to happen.

what's your prediction for TA TDKR and Brave?

July 7-8

Weekend Forecast

1 (1) The Amazing Spider-Man (Sony) ¥410-420 million ($5.1-5.3 million), Week 2

2 (2) Snow White and the Huntsman (Toho-Towa) ¥110-120 million ($1.3/1.4 million), Week 4

3 (new) The Life of Guskou Budori (Warner Bros.) ¥90-100 million ($1.1/1.2 million), Week 1

4 (3) Rinjo: The Movie (TOEI) ¥90-100 million ($1.1/1.2 million), Week 2

5 (4) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) ¥85-95 million ($1.1/1.2 million), Week 5

6 (new) Man on a Ledge (Disney) ¥75-85 million ($900,000 - $1 million), Week 1

7 (5) Thermae Romae (Toho) ¥65-75 million ($800-850,000), Week 11

8 (6) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) ¥40-50 million ($500-550,000), Week 7

9 (new) Go! Anpanman: Revive Banana Island (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) ¥35-45 million ($425-475,000), Week 1

10 (7) LOVE, Masao (Shochiku) ¥20-30 million ($250-300,000), Week 3

The Amazing Spider-Man is likely to drop over 50%, but that's only because it had previews last weekend. The weekend drop minus previews will be in the normal 25/35% range.

Anpanman will once again luck out and make the Top 10 this year due to late June being typically weak.

Weekend Milestone Watch:

The Amazing Spider-Man will exceed 1.5 billion yen ($20 million) and 1 million admissions. It crossed 1 billion yen on Wednesday, so I see about 1.7/1.8 billion ($22 million) after Sunday.

Snow White and the Huntsman may reach 1.5 billion yen ($20 million) after four weeks in release.

Thermae Romae will cross 4.5 million admissions and 5.7 billion yen ($72 million) after it's eleventh week in release.

MIB 3 may reach 3.1 billion yen ($40 million) and 2.1 million admissions after it's seventh, and final week in the Top 10.

Summer Vacation begins next week, and it's also Umi no Hi (Marine/Ocean Day) Weekend and sees the release of July's, and possibly Summer 2012's, two biggest films: Umizaru: Brave Hearts and Pokemon Best Wishes: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsman - Keldeo. Heruta Skelter should also post a decent showing next week (fourth place perhaps).

22M total after a 5M weekend. Can it even make 50M. I know movies are leggy plus summer weekdays would kick in but it has competition? SM3 was also not so leggy after a huge start.

Competition means nothing from mid-July to mid-August, it's Summer Vacation. Blockbusters open against each other or just one weak apart every July and they always perform well (July 2010 is perfect example: TS3, Arrietty, BS3, Inception, Pokemon). And $50 million is definitely still doable, and quite likely, for Spider-Man. Most films receive a 2.3 multiplier from their two week total which would give Spider-Man about $51/52 million if my two week prediction is accurate. There's also Umi no Hi next weekend which will give it a boost as well. It should still be playing well next month too and benefit from Obon Festival. At the moment, $60 million is still attainable.SM3 was a rare case of a frontloaded film because it opened at the start of Golden Week, meaning four of it's first five days in release were National Holidays. Literally everyone, including business and the like, is off that week.

Another Best Wishes movie?

It's only the second film in the Best Wishes (5th) generation. Each Pokemon Generation lasts about 4 years, thus meaning 4 movies per generation. Edited by Corpse

And don't forget weekends in Japan are just 2-days and usually account for less than 50% of a film's total gross year-round.I just read at Cinematoday that Spider-Man sold 62,889 tickets (about 90 million yen or $1.2 million) on Wednesday alone for example.

July 7-8

Weekend Estimates

1 (1) The Amazing Spider-Man (Sony) ¥349,800,000 ($4.4 million), -39.8% / -61%, Week 2

2 (2) Snow White and the Huntsman (Toho-Towa) ¥89,600,000 ($1.2 million), -44.3%, Week 4

3 (3) Rinjo: The Movie (TOEI) ¥87,600,000 ($1.1 million), -39%, Week 2

4 (new) The Life of Guskou Budori (Warner Bros.) ¥76,100,000 ($959,000), Week 1

5 (4) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) ¥75,900,000 ($956,000), -43.1%, Week 5

6 (new) Go! Anpanman: Revive Banana Island (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) ¥75,700,000 ($953,000), Week 1

7 (new) Man on a Ledge (Disney) ¥72,800,000 ($920,000), Week 1

8 (5) Thermae Romae (Toho) ¥51,700,000 ($650,000), -38.3%, Week 11

9 (6) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) ¥31,900,000 ($400,000), -49.1%, Week 7

10 (7) Love, Masao (Shochiku) ¥23,600,000 ($300,000), -45.2%, Week 3

The overall weekend is a little weaker than usual (about 10%) because last Sunday movie tickets were 40% off (the first of every month) which resulted in sub 20/25%, and some single digit, drops last weekend.

The second drop you see (-61%) for The Amazing Spider-Man is the drop with previews included into it's opening weekend, and in line with films like Inception or Resident Evil IV that also had previews.

Go! Anpanman greatly overperformed by selling almost 70% more tickets than last year's film. It only played in 3 more theaters, so it's even more surprising.

Films 4-6 could easily change rank in the morning since they're only 400,000 yen (less than $5,000) apart with estimates.

Next weekend will see four new releases, two very big ones, make the Top 10 to liven things up.

THR's $20.7 million total is pretty solid and will guaranteed about $50 million. Summer Vacation starting this week, Umi no Hi, and Obon Week will probably push it a bit higher, too.I've explained many times that judging a film's performance on the first few weeks, or even a month, in release is pointless in Japan. The avg. multiplier is about 6, and blockbusters and summer releases often go above that number.
