2 (-) Pokemon Best Wishes: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsman - Keldeo (Toho) Week 1

3 (1) The Amazing Spider-Man (Sony) Week 3

4 (-) Heruta Skelter (Asmik Ace) Week 1

6 (2) Snow White and the Huntsman (Toho-Towa) Week 5

7 (4) Go! Anpanman: Revive Banana Island (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) Week 2

8 (3) Rinjo: The Movie (TOEI) Week 2

9 (5) Man on a Ledge (Disney) Week 2

10 (6) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) Week 6

Brave Hearts opening weekend, Saturday and Sunday, results are 686,977 admissions and a gross of ¥878,226,350 ($11.1 million) on 450 screens. Since Friday, it's 4-day total easily exceeded 1 million admissions with 1,223,437 to gross ¥1,563,575,650 ($19.8 million). This bests the openings of the previous Umizaru films, and becomes the fastest film this year to reach 1 million admissions, ¥1 billion and ¥1.5 billion. It's also by far the best opening this year, nearly passing The Amazing Spider-Man's 9-day total (including previews) in 4 days.

More than 5 million admissions is very likely, and ¥7-8 billion ($90-100 million) is the target total.

Pokemon did very well for itself, too, selling 724,067 tickets to gross ¥753,760,100 ($9.6 million) over the three day weekend on 351 screens. It's opening weekend (Sat and Sun) figure hasn't been released yet.

Heruta Skelter opens in fourth place on 204 screens. Over the weekend (Sat and Sun) it grossed ¥233,533,030 ($3 million) on 174,274 admissions, bring it's 3-day total to ¥348,173,390 ($4.4 million) on 257,281 admissions. The opening is a bit above expectations and guarantees it the ¥1 billion milestone.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanaho opens on just 50 screens, but managed a fifth place ranking. No figures have been released, though it's ranking alone is extremely impressive.

Umizaru: Brave Hearts Breakdown

Fri. - ¥239,944,200 ($3.1 million) / 190,821 admissions

Sat. - ¥368,449,250 ($4.7 million) / 301,238 admissions (+54%)

Sun. - ¥509,770,710 ($6.4 million) / 382,739 admissions (+39%)

Mon. - ¥445,405,100 ($5.6 million) / 348,639 admissions (-13%)

4-Day Total - 1,563,575,650 ($19.8 million) / 1,223,437 admissions.

Incredible. I'm starting to think this may have an outside shot at ¥10 billion ($125 million), making it the first film to reach this milestone since 2010.

No, it's possible, but it's certainly the ceiling I think. In the breakdown I posted above I said it may have a chance at 10 billion (no film has reached this coveted milestone since 2010, and they were all 3D releases). I'm about to post a survey (similar to Cinemascore) that suggests it's going to have a long run.

So old people do go to the movies more than most give them credit for?

You could say it like that, or you could say young people don't go to the movies as often as in other countries. I think both statements have their truths. The 50's demo is usually ahead of the 40's demo when this data is released. From my observation, the 30's demo is the group that goes to the movies the most. I think that 20's and 30's making up 55% of the opening weekend audience is a great sign for Brave Hearts. In the event of bad weather (like this past week's horrible rain in the south), people in their 50s or older are probably less likely to go outside and attend a movie.

Japan has a very old population. That 11.7% is actually less than what many films receive.

23% of the Japanese population is 65 or over 65, and we could reach 43% in 2050, it's really big. It's not easy for Hollywood to appeal such an old population.I'm surprised you're not Japanese, I mean we have no Japanese on this website, but we have several Koreans, and South Korea (49m) is way less populated than Japan (127m)..The bad English proficiency in Japan, we see the effects now :P

Yes, I guess young Japanese prefer Hollywood movies and old Japanese prefer Japanese movies, same thing in Germany.I wonder about The Avengers there..The style, the fights, it's really like their Shonen (Mangas dedicated to male teens and young adults), they could love it if it gives it a chance.I know it because I love Shonens and I love The Avengers :D

what is umizaru? Titanic meets Bay Watch?

...I guess that's not a bad comparison, lol.The story is about the Japan Coast Guard and their shipwreck rescues, or in the case of the new movie, a jumbo jet rescue. Like most Japan movies, they're based on a manga and tv drama.

There seems to be some doubt about 3D, or rather the profit gained from converting/filming in 3D isn't worth it anymore.3D was huge in 2010, and still did very well in 2011. However, lately films have been getting a 60% or so 3D share vs. the 80-90% share during 2010 and a couple in 2011. It could be because the interest of 3D was enough to justify the premium when it first started, but no longer. It's expensive to go to the movies in Japan, and even in 2D a family of four would spend $60-65 on just tickets vs. $75-80 for a 3D release.I think Kaibutsu-Kun may have gotten under a 50% share last November, and I know that Always 3 only got about a 30% share in January (half of it's audience was over 40, though). Spider-Man is also just managing a 55-60% share. If these franchise films aren't getting over a 70% share, it's probably cheaper to stay with 2D in the end.Brave Hearts is on track to beat The Last Message in admissions, and probably match it in gross so it was a smart move, imo. 3D may have discouraged some older people and hurt the overall attendance.

Brave Hearts delivers the biggest opening weekend of the year. Technically, if you count a weekend of previews (¥320 million / $4 million worth)*, The Amazing Spider-Man would be on top in gross but second still to Brave Hearts in admissions with 620,000.

Pokemon drops about 6% compared to last year's film, but earns a Top 10 ranking. It would rank 3rd in admissions, but because it sells so many tickets in advance at a discount price, it's avg. ticket price is well below the average.

*Local Sources haven't been including previews into Spider-Man's Opening Weekend (BOM didn't either which I just realized), so I'm not going to either unless it's later stated otherwise. My guess, since previews have been included in the past for certain films, is if previews represent a certain percentage of an opening weekend they aren't included. And previews for Spider-Man would be over 50% of it's Opening Weekend.

I just made a poll about Previews and Opening Weekends. Some films have their previews included in their Opening Weekends, while others don't. And some sources don't even match on the same films. Basically, there's no clear consensus concerning previews. If the poll receives enough votes, and a majority (60%), I'll go by the result.
