JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Corpse, no actuals yet? A few weeks back you gave admissions figures as well as actuals. Any idea when that will be up?

I did, but I'm much busier these days.

The actual for The Expendables 2 - 164,786,007 ($2.07 million) on 135,418 admissions on 545 screens.

Oct. 27-28

Weekend Forecast

1 (-) Smile Pretty Cure! The Movie: Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) ¥180 million ($2.3 million), NEW

2 (-) Terminal Trust (Toho) ¥150 million ($2 million), NEW

3 (1) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) ¥90 million ($1.2 million), Week 2

4 (2) Connection (Toho) ¥85 million ($1.1 million), Week 4

5 (3) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥75 million ($1 million), Week 8

6 (4) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) ¥65 million ($850,000), Week 3

7 (-) Resident Evil: Damnation (Sony) ¥55 million ($700,000), NEW

8 (-) Argo (Warner Bros.) ¥50 million ($650,000), NEW

9 (-) RE: Cyborg (Production IG) ¥40 million ($500,000), NEW

10 (5) Space Sheriff Gaven: The Movie (TOEI) ¥35 million ($450,000), Week 2

The last weekend of October isn't going to be much different than the last two weeks. The No.1 film probably won't reach ¥200 million ($2.5 million) which will make the past three weekends the three weakest of the year. At least September more than made up for this year's weak October.

Note: Resident Evil: Damnation is NOT Resident Evil: Retribution (the latter will fall out of the Top 10 this weekend). It's a 3D only animated feature film released by Sony in Japan that will probably make it's way to DVD elsewhere.

Weekend Estimates

1 (-) Smile Pretty Cure! The Movie: Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) ¥181 million ($2.3 million), 0, NEW

2 (1) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) ¥89 million ($1.2 million), -46%, Week 2

3 (3) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥85 million ($1.1 million), -15%, Week 8

4 (2) Connection (Toho) ¥84 million ($1.1 million), -32%, Week 4

5 (-) Terminal Trust (Toho) ¥61 million ($775,000), 0, NEW

6 (6) The Lorax (Toho-Towa) ¥56 million ($725,000), -21%, Week 4

7 (4) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) ¥50 million ($625,000), -46%, Week 4

8 (7) The Mystical Law (Nikkatsu) ¥45 million ($575,000), -28%, Week 4

9 (-) Argo (Warner Bros.) ¥41 million ($525,000), 0, NEW

10 (-) Resident Evil: Damnation (Sony) ¥36 million ($450,000), 0, NEW

'Smile Pretty Cure' debuts with an estimated 93% take of it's predecessor last March. Pretty good start, though I doubt it reaches the ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) milestone since it won't have Spring Break.

So-so for 'The Expendables 2'. It's still tracking slightly behind the original after two weeks (though they're about even in USD).

Excellent hold for 'Bayside Shakedown 4'. If it stays above 'Connection', an eighth weekend in the Top 3 is a great accomplishment that hasn't been done since 'Harry Potter 7.2' last Summer.

Disappointing for 'Terminal Trust'. You don't see too many dumbs like this coming from Toho. It was only released in 264 theaters though, less than the eighth weekend of BS and fourth weekend of Connection.

'The Lorax' has been performing very well for an imported animated release. It's probably over ¥600 million ($7.5 million) now and will likely finish quite close to 'Brave' which still hasn't seen any announcement of it reaching ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) yet.

Does BOM really have TS3 at $115 million? They must have stopped tracking it well before it's run ended. It actually grossed $130 million (10.8 billion yen).Monsters Inc. was indeed a very big hit which should surely help Monsters University. I don't think it'll behave like Toy Story 3 though. Unlike Monsters, the first two Toy Story films weren't very big. They gained a large audience on DVD over a decade.10 billion yen is never an easy number to reach, so I won't be projecting that much right now. Chances are it's going to open very close to Hayao Miyazaki's new film if it sticks to Summer also. Opening near or against Miyazaki shouldn't necessarily hurt Monsters, but I have a feeling Miyazaki's next film may be billed as his final film which probably would hurt it and other films next Summer to a certain degree.Anyway, 5 billion yen ($60 million) should be pretty easy goal and I'll predict 7-8 billion yen ($90 million range) right now. That's using today's exchange rate. It could be completely different come next summer.

2012 officially overtakes 2011 in films that have grossed over ¥1 billion (56 Vs. 54).

'Connection' and 'Outrage 2', likely the only two October releases to make over ¥1 billion, debut on the charts this week.

'Bayside Shakedown 4' continues to edge closer to 'Thermae Romae'. It's going to be very close between these two films to see which claims 2nd place for the year. Also, 'Bayside Shakedown 4' ranked fourth in it's eighth weekend breaking it's Top 3 streak.

'Resident Evil 5' has begun to slow down now. ¥4 billion ($50 million) is still quite likely, though.

The Opening Weekend Chart has been barren of any debuts in several weeks now. Thankfully that'll change now that October is finally over. The most interesting opening will be 'Evangelion 3.0' on November 17th. The last film opened (in limited) over ¥500 million on about half as many screens as the third film will be receiving. Hype appears to be enormous (that even the crew, animators, filmmakers, etc. was kept secret until two weeks ago) enough it may challenge the top 2.

The ten selected theaters I'll keep updated over the next 12 days. Among them include some of the busiest and largest theaters in the country such as Roppongi Hills, Wald 9, and Umeda. Since I've been tracking the box office, I've never seen sellouts like this.
