Weekend Admissions Ranking

1 (new) Snow White and the Huntsman (Toho-Towa) Week 1

2 (1) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) Week 2

3 (2) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) Week 4

4 (3) Thermae Romae (Toho) Week 8

5 (4) Dark Shadows (Warner Bros.) Week 5

6 (6) The Final Judgement (Nikkatsu) Week 3

7 (5) We Bought a Zoo (FOX) Week 2

8 (7) Girls (Toho) Week 4

9 (8) Sadako 3D (Kadokawa Pictures) Week 6

10 (new) Library War: The Wings of Revolution (Kadokawa Pictures) Week 1

11 (new) Love & Sincerity (TOEI/Kadokawa Pictures)

Snow White and the Huntsman opens via Toho-Towa (Toho's subsidiary company), and is the third high-profile imported release they acquired distribution rights to earlier this year (Battleship and MIB 3 being the other two).

The fantasy debuted on 572 screens and grossed ¥301,775,200 ($3.8 million) on 234,869 admissions over the weekend. Since Friday, the film has made ¥374,826,400 ($4.7 million) on 296,160 admissions. A final total of ¥2 billion ($25 million) is possible, though it'll likely settle for ¥1.7/1.8 billion ($21/22 million) instead.

Thermae Romae enjoys it's eighth weekend still in the Top 5. After 51 days in release, it's total stands at over ¥5.2 billion ($66 million+) and more than 4.1 million admissions. This makes it the second biggest film of the year so far, and it could become the #1 film of the year as early as this Friday.

Library Wars: The Wings of Revolution makes a surprise debut in the #10 spot this weekend. It was released on just 30 screens so no weekend data was released. Over the weekend, the film grossed ¥39,103,600 ($490,000) on 25,614 admissions giving it a psa of ¥1,303,453 (or over $16,000).

Love & Sincerity misses the Top 10 in admissions and it's unlikely to have made it there in gross as well.

Multipliers are high because Japan has 2-day weekends, and there isn't any rush or frontloaded factor for any film really. Even big franchise films can easily get a 6 or 7. And there are usually a couple films each year that goes well over 10, 15, or even 20. Kamen Rider films generally have the worst multipliers each year with 4.It's also important to note that weekdays are just as strong or stronger than weekends year-round.

June 23-24

Weekend Forecast

1 (1) Snow White and the Huntsman (Toho-Towa) ¥205-215 million ($2.5-2.7 million), Week 2

2 (2) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) ¥165-175 million ($2.1-2.3 million), Week 3

3 (3) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) ¥135-145 million ($1.7/1.8 million), Week 5

4 (4) Thermae Romae (Toho) ¥125-135 million ($1.6/1.7 million), Week 9

5 (new) LOVE, Masao-kun Ga Iku (Shochiku) ¥80-90 million ($1/1.1 million), Week 1

6 (5) Dark Shadows (Warner Bros.) ¥50-55 million ($600-650,000), Week 6

7 (new) Berserk The Golden Age Arc II (Warner Bros.) ¥40-45 million ($500-550,000), Week 1

8 (6) The Final Judgement (Nikkatsu) ¥40-45 million ($500-550,000), Week 4

9 (7) We Bought a Zoo (FOX) ¥35-40 million ($450-500,000), Week 3

10 (8) Girls (Toho) ¥30-35 million ($400-450,000), Week 5

The Amazing Spider-Man has previews this weekend at many locations. The last big Hollywood film with previews was Resident Evil: Afterlife, and it grossed approx. ¥418 million (about $5 million) in previews alone. This should be the number Spider-Man aims for this weekend. That figure was also included into REIV's opening weekend, so I'm expecting the same thing to happen for Spider-Man's nationwide opening next weekend.

Weekend Milestone Watch:

Thermae Romae will become the #1 film of 2012 and may exceed ¥5.5 billion ($70 million) and 4.3 million admissions. And there is actually a possibility it rises to #2 this weekend in it's ninth week in release with another single digit drop or even a small increase.

Glow of Fireflies will cruise past the ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) milestone becoming the 35th film this year to reach this mark.

MIB 3 may reach ¥3 billion ($38 million) and 2 million admissions.

Dark Shadows will exceed ¥2 billion ($25 million) and 1.7 million admissions.

Dark Shadows will exceed ¥2 billion ($25 million) and 1.7 million admissions.

Hi Corpse... awesome job with the Japanese BO updates!

Anyway, I've been googling around and i've gotten the impression that average 2D ticket prices haven't changed that much (or at all) in most of the last 10 years or so (not counting student discounts or early presales or some such, and apparently the price doesn't change from one city/region to another?). It seems it was at Y1800 when the first potter came out in 2001/2002 and was still at Y1800 at least up until before spring last year.

Am i right in saying this or do i need better references  ?

I also came across an article that said that one of the biggest (if not the biggest) theater chains in japan was reducing their ticket prices from Y1800 to Y1500 starting spring of last year 2011. Is this true, and if so, will it force or has it forced other theater chains to do the same?

Thanks in advance. :)

Ticket prices have been the approx. the same for about 15 years now. The general admission fee is still 1800 yen. I love that ticket prices have remained the same because it's so much easier and much more accurate to compare films this way. No need to convert for this, adjust for that, etc. Toho was suppose to lower ticket prices at some of their theaters to 1500 yen to encourage more people to come to their locations. Some locations have the lower price, but others don't. Toho's latest attempt to completely monopolize the box office (they already have a 34% market share avg. the past several years, and nearly 50% for 2012 so far) is by placing movie ticket vending machines that dispense tickets exclusively to their locations this summer. I think they're priced the same, though.

Aren't there competition laws preventing monopolisation?

Weekend news has been really slow so I don't have anything to report right now. In the next few hours weekend estimates should be released which may include Spider-Man preview numbers, but I have work today and won't be able to post them until tonight.

The Amazing Spider-Man sold 200,304 tickets to gross approx. ¥276,600,514 ($3.5 million) in previews this weekend from 346 theaters. The 3D share isn't known yet, so the gross may rise slightly in the morning (15 hours from this post).

Full weekend estimate will be up shortly.
