JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Last year's overall total/total after GW multiplier was 1.4346. This year's movie had one extra day so its multiplier will probably be lower but even going with 1.30 puts it over $50m. So unless it really collapses it should manage it.

49 vs 50 is irrelevant. Huge jump from IW and really good for Japan which hasn't been strong on CBMs lately.

Glad they liked it, beforehand people were saying 35 or a bit more.

What does this mean?

It means, doesn't matter if EG passes $50m or not. Because even if it ends up being just below $50m (for example $49m), it's still an amazing result and a huge increase from IW.

The post-Golden Week weekend is one of the worst in terms of drops and debuts, and given this year's GW was super-sized, this weekend will follow that tradition, but on steroids.

Since Endgame is naturally frontloaded, it'll perhaps, surprisingly, have one of the better holds as a result of not having as far to fall after the holidays. It'll likely return to #1, and pre-sales suggest this as well. Detective Pikachu will also have one of the "better" holds this weekend as well since it was released on the tail-end of Golden Week, therefor it didn't burn as much demand before its opening. Detective Conan, however, was the strongest film over the Golden Week holiday frame, so it's going to suffer one of the biggest drops and will probably fall from #1.

The bottom half of the Top 10 is a mess. There are a lot of limited and near-limited releases opening this weekend, and since holdovers in the bottom half of the Top 10 last week are going to see huge drops, the #6-10th positions could go to any of around ten or so films.

Is this correct ?

Yes looks to be.

EG and DP were very similar in admissions at usual locations for the weekend. Wasn't sure which would win, looks like Pika edged it.

It's actually a really good hold for Pika given it's a post-holiday!

Pikachu wins in adm, by 2k

AEG wins in BO, by 2M yen

That's more what I thought. At usual locs Pika won by 700 over weekend, so was expecting AEG to win in BO by a tad.

Did Pika hit ¥300m this weekend?

May 17th is when Detective pikachu imax release in japan is.

so tickets will be more expansive is some areas. Will help maintain the legs

The thing is that End Game is holding on to IMAX screens in most of the world and DP will finally get them this week (2nd weekend in most countries); not sure about other regions but in South East Asia, there is a rush-factor for fans to catch their favourite movies in IMAX in OW, and IMAX opening only on the 2nd weekend is sometimes too late and screenings are pretty much empty.

Yeah that’s true but I guess it just depends on how much a country likes the movie

a 31% drop from 1st to 2nd weekend without holidays
