JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Sunday night business slowed down a bit, not surprising since this is a regular weekend with school and work tomorrow, but it was able to sell enough before then to still claim the Sunday record.

However, its Sunday ended up declining from Saturday, but a 5% decline after such a historic Saturday is of little concern.

I'll post the final Sunday update in a few hours, followed by an estimated opening weekend figure and many, many chart updates using that figure. It'll be exciting (as far as box-office tracking goes).

Sunday full day same time/location

Blue (50%-) 88 shows

Orange (50%+) 33 shows

Red (80%+) 63 shows

Average saturation (assuming 25%/65%/90%) = 54%

Saturday real saturation (TOHO) = 52% (predicted 59%)

This is because evening/night shows were less saturated, so today I have counted the full day and it seems a bit bigger (+2%)

By the way these number should be take as a trend because TOHO is the 24% of mimorin2014 Saturday admissions (109k/454K) but only the 19% (208K/1076K) of seats, that means TOHO cinemas are a bit more saturated than the others chains and the overall saturation will be lesser (52% vs 42% Saturday)

TOHO Sunday seat/saturation by version

VERSION

          SEATS       SOLD   % SEATS      %SOLD
DUBBED   188084 98752 70,3% 52,5%
SUBBED   49081 11545 18,4% 23,5%
DUBBED IMAX 9516 4623 3,6% 48,6%
SUBBED IMAX 14271 1976 5,3% 13,8%
MAGICAL EDITION 6491 4512 2,4% 69,5%

TOTAL   267443 121408   45,4%

Overall saturation is 43%, bigger than Sat but there are less seats today so adm are -4%

At this time, I am not surprised at all. I mean sequel to biggest modern blockbuster will of course break opening weekend record.

That said, I was sorta expecting $20mn 3 days, so ehh.

To be honest, I didn't expect this. I mean, I knew OW's gonna be much bigger than Frozen. But not record-breaking big. In Japan, a sequel to a blockbuster is not always guaranteed to open bigger. Even if it does, it won't be that much bigger. Let alone breaking OW record. Then again, maybe I shouldn't have applied normal rules to Frozen in Japan.

not a Blockbuster, the biggest blockbuster in modern history.

True. But the biggest blockbuster is still a blockbuster. We have no precedent to know how a sequel of a movie that big would perform. Even HP2 didn't open that much bigger (without previews) than the first. And HP1 was the 2nd biggest movie ever at the time. Although this is not a good comparison, since HP1 was already big from the get-go. Other biggest blockbusters don't have sequels, only follow ups from the same director (Howl's Moving Castle and Weathering with You). That's why I assumed Frozen 2 would be like any other blockbusters sequels.

Frozen II has 3 weekends with no competition right? Then comes Star Wars, but then the Post Christmas and New Years holidays? Might be a huge month.

Corpse is sure it will have great 2nd weekend as big openers normally does. After that we will see the effect of how good the WOM is over there. TS4 legs to me was not great but it faced crazy competition but in japan multiple movies can thrive. So its all driven by WOM. Aladdin had insane legs bcos of its WOM. So did 1st Frozen.

No believe me. It isn't.

Why are you forcing your belief? Besides, the biggest elephant ever is still an elephant. In a venn diagram, it's a subset. So how is the biggest blockbuster not a blockbuster? I don't get it. Please elaborate?

So big that it isn’t a blockbuster, then what is it? A citybuster? A countrybuster?

In the above context, I meant that Frozen wasn't just a blockbuster in Japan.

There are many Blockbusters every year, but what Frozen did in Japan is unique. We, in India, say them All Time Blockbuster.

Baahubali, Baahubali 2, Gadar (2001), DDLJ (1995), HAHK (1994) are the recent ATBBs.
