>Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker earns its second weekend atop the box-office, and delivered a better hold than either of its predecessors (though not by much). Its two-week cumulative total is exactly even with The Last Jedi based on my rough estimates (after opening 3% lower), so perhaps an early sign that it won't be near as frontloaded as its predecessor.

Star Wars (ST) Second Weekend Comparison:
¥726 million ($6.0 million), -42%, ¥3.84 billion ($31.8 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens
¥696 million ($6.1 million), -39%, ¥3.20 billion ($28.3 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi
¥653 million ($6.0 million), -37%, ¥3.20 billion ($29.3 million), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker *Estimate*

>Frozen II appears to be the sole film to increase this weekend, and this is very notable because this weekend isn't known for its increases. Great holds, sure, but next weekend is the one that typically sees the increases. It's already pulled a little ahead of my rough projection path I posted a few days ago, and I expect it'll have a strong New Year frame. Its chances of reaching the ¥15 billion ($140 million) milestone remains pretty good.

Frozen II looks to exceed the ¥10 billion milestone tomorrow, its 40th-day in release, on the last day of 2019. It didn't get there as fast as its predecessor, or ten other films, but reaching the milestone after 40 days with the only holiday support in its run beginning just last week is quite impressive. And it technically hasn't had one national holiday during its run yet -- the first will be this Wednesday.

It will also become the third fastest sequel to reach the mark. This isn't as notable of an achievement since original films are more likely than sequels to find uber-success in Japan, but it's pretty impressive as well.

New Year Eve is really the weakest day in bussiness during the New Year week....

Yup. In Japan, people like to spend New Year's Eve with their families at home, watching TV. It's the tradition there. In many other countries, families gather on Christmas Eve. But in Japan, they do it on New Year's Eve.

@edroger3 the new year day number so far is doing me a concern..... even new year eve (yesterday) has bigger jump than today!!

Japan is weird market... in the same new year week but monday +269%, tuesday +48%( eventhough tuesday was supposed to be flat or decrease because its new year eve)..., then wednesday +around 10% (???) (Wednesday is new year day which is supposed to be the biggest during the new year week)...
