This should be the low-point of COVID-19's impact on the box-office. Everything is holding very well now, so I imagine things will improve and get "back to normal" next month when some bigger films open. Other than Mulan (now opening May 22nd), none of the other big April films like Detective Conan have been postponed.

This upcoming weekend has a couple notable films opening, not event films, but they did decently on Friday. Birds of Prey will open above ¥100 million, maybe ¥150 million, to prevent the weekend from having a sub-¥100 million #1 film. And Not Quite Dead may approach/exceed ¥100 million as well. And to finish off the month of March, Fate/stay night - Heaven's Feel III - Spring Song will likely do ¥300/400 million net week.

It was originally slated for April 10th, but moved back to May 22nd. All domestic sites still have it listed for the May 22nd date. Unless things suddenly worsen, it should open on that day. Japan never saw the uptick or explosion in cases like just about everywhere else. They're not out of the clear yet, but since we're nearing April, things are looking good.

The May 22nd release date for Japan was announced even before the movie delayed its global release, so definitely will be moved in Japan.

>Birds of Prey debuted atop the box-office, selling 81,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 736 screens; it sold 136,002 admissions over its first three-days in release. While certainly hindered by the slower business at the box-office, this is still a decent opening weekend all things considered. It's NOT the worst opening for a DC film. I'll post the Marvel/DC Opening Weekend Chart later to show where it landed.

>Not Quite Dead settled for a second place start, selling 67,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 333 screens; it sold 108,000 admissions over its first three-days in release. Not a particularly good start, but it's alright since it would have broke ¥100 million under normal circumstances.

Honestly, it's probably going to be around posting decent numbers for several more weeks, so I wouldn't completely rule out ¥5 billion ($45 million+) yet. This weekend was easily among the weakest ever for the start of Spring Break weekend (typically one of the strongest weekends every year outside of Summer), but the box-office is still doing pretty well in the absence of the event films (Doraemon, Onward, Sonic, and Precure) being postponed. And this weekend, while very low, still isn't near any record lows and isn't even the weakest in the past five years.

I'm actually shocked. Horror movies always struggle to surpass even $1m in Japan, most of TCU movies ended below that mark. Why is Midsommar doing so well?

As a result of these theaters closed, the box-office is reportedly down 55-60%.

This weekend is down 90% compared to the same weekend last year, and the box-office is down a projected 63-75%, higher than the reported 55-60% range from last week. Goes to show just how much the box-office really depends on Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures.

Here's the past Weekend's Top 10 ranked by admissions. As per the usual, no weekend figures were released this week due to theaters being closed in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures (which were also apart of the state of emergency declaration last Tuesday), which account for 80% of the national box-office. And when you take into account that some other theaters across the country have also closed, the box-office is down over 90%.

And for the first time, no cumulative totals were reported this week either. Everything is earning peanuts at this point though, so their totals are barely moving at this point, so it's not a total surprise.
