JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

On 175 theaters (47% of total), Demon Slayer has 394,887 admits in pre-sales in 4299 shows with 36% occupancy. And that is not even final, just at 6PM. Holy Shit!

That is equivalent of 550k advance sales on usual 70% locations and overall 750k approx already. That right there is the Friday opening record in pre-sales :hahaha:

The biggest Friday opening day I can remember is Endgame at 247k. Detective Conan movie in April 2019 had just 179,626.

Chain wise breakdown of Demon Slayer

 TOHO: 175,129 / 510,611 34.3%
 109: 36,537 / 85,757 42.6%
 KINEZO: 4,341 / 138,040 32.1%
 MOVIX: 73,919 / 148,181 49.9%
 UNITED: 64,966 / 208,634 31.1%

 Total: 394,887 / 1,091,223 36.2%

The number of seats in the AEON system is about 230,000, so even if the sales rate is less than 25%, The number of seats sold is already over 450,000.
It is a certain situation without waiting for Saturday and Sunday to exceed 569,492 seats of 2019/12/1 " Frozen 2" which became the highest record in history .

It will cross 3mn admits in 3 days, when no film till date has even cross 1.7mn.

This is even crazier than what Endgame did in USA, considering how Japan and USA are two most saturated markets when we see in opening weekend admits.

Edit - LOL. No film has ever crossed 1.5mn admits either. Yo-Kai Watch had 1,484,916 admits in first weekend but only Saturday and Sunday release.

This reminds me of Endgame in China. Though it will break the record by more, and with 3 days instead of 5 :hahaha:

Endgame though crazy in money, did not had single day admit record on any day. In hindsight, 5 days weekend took us from crazy single day records. Though if we add midnight to OD, that will give 13.8mn admits, number 2 behind Monster Hunt 2 OD of 14.2mn, but ahead of F&F8 13.2mn.

Endgame in US, UK is more likely.

Baahubali 2 in India had 27mn admits in FSS when previous record was barely 10mn.

"filmgoers will also receive an adorable special coloring in sheet drawn by manga creator Koyoharu Gotouge. This is one top of the already announced 84-page booklet that features the story of Rengoku's first mission as a Demon Slayer that will be given out to everyone who sees Mugen Train.

While the sheets given out at screenings are limited to 2.5 million people, the images were released on the official website, letting anyone download them to color in at home!"

When they decided for that figure of 2.5 million drawings for the audience, I wonder if anyone thought they will be gone/mostly gone by the end of the opening weekend.

It is difficult to comprehend due to how different western and japanese market are. I don't think anything can challenge dragon ball and naruto in most of the world.

But every number I see about demon slayer, coming from japan, puts it as the biggest anime of this century, if not all time. Manga after season ending, home media, streaming and now box office. Only thing left is video games.

Manga is already pointed out. But in dvd/br sales, KnY did half as much sales in 1 year as one piece has done in it's whole lifetime of 20 years.

I think it's way more than good animation. Any japanese here who can explain the reasons?

At 18:45 465k admits on usual locations. There are shows worth 320k seats remaining, the occupancy of those will be 80% or more, which means we are looking at 720k day in usual locations. MASSIVE.

The previous record was 569k and only time a film ever crossed 500k. And here this film is crossing 700k.

Yesterday I stated this will be the OW record in Japan for decades to come. I take that back, this record will never be topped. This is the absolute max a movie can do in Japan in its OW atm and it's downhill from here. History in the making this weekend.

Never say Never.

I mean, DS has 61% showtimes at usual locations. There can be more.

I don't think Endgame is a suitable comparison here, EG really isn't that a big deal in Japan,

Yes, with current market conditions, but Japan's population has started decreasing and streaming is getting bigger, those are my main concerns when stating nothing will ever beat DS.
