TFA became the highest grossing film in NA in only 20 days, while it was still making a very large amount of money every day, so there was no noticeable boost as far as anyone could tell. I don't know much about Japan BO, but I think it's very possible DS sees a bit of a boost.

There was some crazy winter storm in January in most of the US that dampened its gross a bit, but it still managed to make almost $200m after crushing Avatar. However, it was strongest in its first 17 days. The second and third weekend records still stand even after Avengers 4 obliterated the opening weekend record.

02 (---) ¥325,000,000 ($3.1 million), 0, ¥435,000,000 ($4.2 million), Pokemon: Coco (Toho) NEW
03 (02) ¥253,000,000 ($2.4 million), -33%, ¥2,205,000,000 ($21.1 million), New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms (Toho) WK3
04 (---) ¥200,000,000 ($1.9 million), 0, ¥300,000,000 ($2.9 million), Poupelle of Chimney Town (Toho) NEW
05 (03) ¥173,000,000 ($1.7 million), -40%, ¥775,000,000 ($7.5 million), The Promised Neverland (Toho) WK2
06 (05) ¥x72,000,000 ($695,000), -39%, ¥2,140,000,000 ($20.6 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 (Toho) WK6
07 (06) ¥x53,000,000 ($510,000), -54%, ¥325,000,000 ($3.1 million), Wonder Woman 1984 (Warner Bros.) WK2
08 (04) ¥x44,000,000 ($425,000), -65%, ¥265,000,000 ($2.6 million), Kamen Rider Zero-One: REAL x TIME (Toei) WK2

10 (08) ¥x26,000,000 ($250,000), -37%, ¥415,000,000 ($4.0 million), Tengaramon (Giggly Box) WK3

Based on these estimates, the last weekend of 2020 beat 2019's by ~5% despite Disney's continued absence.

Since theaters reopened nationwide back in mid-June, roughly half-a-year ago, 2020 is down just 22% versus 2019. And for the full year-on-year, only using the Top 10 films each weekend, 2020 was down 43% versus 2019. This has got to be one of the best, if not the best, retention percentages worldwide.

Damn, 22%, so no chance of ending up above the US box office for 2020?

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train achieved an eleventh-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, experiencing an unprecedented 133% increase thanks to the final giveaway event and its 4DX expansion, shattering the eleventh weekend record in the process. Also over the weekend, on Saturday, the film surpassed Spirited Away to become the new highest grossing film in the market, breaking the long-standing 19-year-old record. And it still has a lot left in the tank, clearly, as it enters the New Year holiday period, so look for an eventual finish that will almost certainly never be beaten in our lifetimes.

>Pokemon: Coco debuted in second place, selling 234,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 375 screens, and sold 320,000 admissions over its first three-days in release. The 22nd Pokemon film was originally scheduled back in July, like every other Pokemon film of the past 22-years, but it was delayed due to COVID. As has been the case with all the younger-skewing films this year, its opening was subdued, although it was able to do just enough to avoid having the worst opening weekend in the series. But I wouldn't read too much into this slow start because, again, this has happened with all younger-skewing films this year, and they've mostly been able to recover by achieving great legs. Also, a change in an annual release date from July over the past 22-years is a major change and must be considered (just like Doraemon being delayed from March to August this year).

>New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms continues to hold well, selling a further 185,000 admissions over its third weekend of release, and has now sold 1.65 million admissions. I will not be surprised if it doubles it three week total, so look for a total above ¥4 billion (~$40 million) without much trouble, but it has potential to go a bit higher, too.

>Poupelle of Chimney Town settled for a fourth place debut, selling 144,000 admissions over the weekend on 306 screens. Its three-day admissions haven't been released yet. This is more of a unique release, so it's hard to gauge its opening performance, but I'd say it's fair, maybe even good. And with the boosts it'll receive from the New Year holiday period, it can really run the numbers up and finish strong. For now, I'd say it's aiming for ¥2 billion (~$20 million), but it's one to keep a watch on.

>The Promised Neverland enjoyed a reasonable hold in its sophomore frame, so it's unlikely to drop-off quickly like many live-action Shonen films have a tendency of doing. It's also performed decently over the weekdays, suggesting that while it's still likely mostly appealing to the fanbase, said fanbase seems to be pretty diverse which will help it enjoy a solid run. ¥2 billion (~$20 million) remains the goal, but I believe it'll comfortably get above that mark and approach ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million).

>Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 managed to hold well-enough in its sixth-weekend so it can finally reach the New Year holiday period while posting respectable numbers still. Its total has been lacking due to little/no support on the weekdays (always the risk of opening in November for family films), but its total is going to grow quite a bit after this week (Monday alone was at least half of its weekend take), and I'm still expecting it to clear the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone.

>Takizawa Kabuki Zero 2020: The Movie remains in the Top 10, even retaining its position from last weekend, so apologies for not estimating it in the Top 10 yesterday. It didn't have the admissions to make the Top 10, so there was something going on to boost its average ticket price to allow this to happen.

The final weekend of 2020 ended on a high note, beating the last weekend of 2019 by 8%.
