So, to begin, most should know by now that a state of emergency was issued in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo on Sunday, this one being the most strict yet resulting in theaters closing (first time any have close since last June) until May 11th. So the numbers are going to be lower than normal for a few weeks, but the numbers so far haven't been as poor as expected. The impact will vary a bit by film (the wider a release with broader appeal will perform better than a small release with limited appeal), but so far, we'll take what's been coming in so far.

>Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet repeated atop the box office, selling an additional 549,000 admissions in its sophomore frame, bringing its 10-day admissions up to 2,745,074, and its total almost hit ¥4 billion. Its second weekend is just 13% lower than its predecessors with the hit it took on Sunday, and its two-week total is 10% higher. It's likely to lose its lead over Golden Week due to the SOEs, but this is a nice lead that will cushion the impact of the next couple weeks.

It's going to be difficult for it to outgross its predecessor, thus becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise (for the ninth-consecutive release), but don't rule it out yet until we see the numbers after a few weeks. Its stage greetings that were cancelled on Sunday will be rescheduled at some point, and if it (and theaters) need a boost, Toho could certainly add a giveaway event for it to recuperate some of the revenue loss these next couple weeks.

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final, the fourth film in the series and Part 1 of the finale, came in second place, selling 362,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 480 screens, and 515,708 admissions over its first three-days in release. The film gave Warner Bros. their biggest opening weekend in revenue since Joker back in October 2019, and biggest opening weekend in admissions since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald way back in November 2018!

This opening is 32% higher than the original film, and 11% lower than the second film (and it would have opened a decent bit higher than it if not for the SOEs on Sunday). It, too, will lose some revenue over Golden Week due to the SOEs, but this start will help get it a good total (and Warner Bros. could also do some sort of event after May 11th for it too). I'd expect around ¥3 billion, but predicting this one right now is difficult.

>Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time exceeded the ¥8 billion milestone on Sunday, and brought its admissions up to 5,233,987 after 49-days in release. This should be one of the harder hit films over the next few weeks due to the SOE in Tokyo in particular. However, it was starting to wind down, and if anything its chances of reaching ¥9 billion (which were 50/50) are probably gone. There was no reason to really get to that milestone though (don't really see Toho trying to make two of their releases the #1 film of 2021 over the other), and it should still get to ¥8.5 billion ($77/78 million) without much trouble.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train enjoyed the best hold in the Top 10, and it probably would have come in sub-15/20% if not for Sunday's SOEs. Still, this is great. Its admissions are up to 28,802,456! It's likely going to take most of its run before its home video release on June 22nd to reach ¥40 billion now with the lower numbers it'll generate over Golden Week due to the SOEs, but it's still pretty much a near-certainty. Toho/Aniplex won't let it finish ¥50 million or something short of the mark, and it's already picking up some 4DX screens again beginning April 29th to further help it get there.

Oh, and if it held off BanG Dream! Episode of Roselia - Part I (which I had to estimate--all its theaters were accounted for at the usual locations since it's a near-limited release), it managed to score an unexpected extra weekend in the Top 5. And since it's likely going to have excellent holds from this point forward in its run, especially as theaters keep it going to reach ¥40 billion (such as giving it back some 4DX screens next week), it could managed to squeak out one or two more weeks in the Top 5 (next weekend is almost certain). And as for the Top 10, it's clearly aiming for well over 30 weeks there now (maybe up to 35+).

>And finally, Loved Like a Flower Bouquet refuses to leave the Top 10 and earns a 13th-consecutive week there now.

So deadline is reporting that Demon Slayer already is the highest grossing movie worldwide for 2020, because The Eight Hundred had an actual worldwide gross of $450m.

Yeah, the official gross is 450.4M. I’ve posted this is a couple places since we learned it but I know that mojo/the-numbers being too high means most people didn’t realize.

Note: Besides the Top 2 films, the other holds are estimated since last weekend's full actuals weren't released due to the Golden Week holiday period.

So, clearly, the box-office is hitting a dry period now that the holidays are over, theaters remain closed in the two busiest prefectures (in addition to 4 others), and several delays in recent weeks due to the SOEs that drag the Top 10 down. May is going to be very uneventful, so expect to see the Top 4/5 films go mostly unchanged for awhile, while the lower ranking films will probably earn some extra weeks in the Top 10 as well.

But we shouldn't be complaining of the slowdown given how strong the box office has been for the past 8/9 months. I think we can accept a month of slowdown and delays.

As mentioned yesterday, surprise new #1 film this weekend!

Beautiful Lure - A Modern Tale of "Painted Skin", based on the work/teachings of messiah claimant Ryuho Okawa, debuted atop the weekend box office selling 112,564 admissions over the weekend frame on 202 screens, and 151,939 admissions since Friday. This is quite good, especially for a Nikkatsu release barely on 200 screens, and reviews are strong. All of this points to a likely leggy performance to come, but it's possible that the worshippers of Okawa could be skewing the numbers at this stage, so we should wait a week or so to see where it goes from here.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final edges out Detective Conan to stay in the second place position with an excellent weekend hold. And the strong weekend hold, in combination with its very strong weekdays, have locked up a total north of ¥3 billion (~$30 million), so it'll very likely outgross the first film of the 5-film saga. Part 2 of the finale film opens on June 4th.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet slips to third place, though it still enjoyed a good weekend hold. It looks like strong holds are in store for the next couple weeks, so it's a little harder to project where this one could end up as Toho is likely to reschedule its postponed stage greetings in June and I wouldn't be surprised by a giveaway event of some sort to recoup some of the loss earnings from the SOEs in Tokyo/Osaka. As it is, it should be on track to break ¥7 billion (~$65 million), but depending on what Toho does next month (if anything), it could go higher still.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time rose a very impressive 69% in its tenth-weekend of release, due to a mini-poster giveaway. It remains to be seen if any additional giveaways or stage greetings occur post-SOEs, which would benefit it greatly, but I'd say it's aiming to finish around ¥8.7 billion (about $80 million) or so at the moment. But again, circumstances could change next month.

Fate/Grand Order: Paladin; Agateram rounds out the Top 5 with a disappointing debut, selling 37,951 admissions over the weekend, down 66% compared to the first film. This isn't a totally unexpected result it doesn't have Tokyo (or Osaka) right now which films like this heavily rely on in order to post significant numbers. It probably "should" have been delayed if earning more money was vital, and while more money is always better, Aniplex isn't exactly losing much here (especially with Demon Slayer) and probably didn't see any real need to delay it in order to earn what was probably not significantly more in the end.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train keeps on chugging along, setting a new 31st Weekend Record! After 31 weeks of release, it has sold 28,937,578 admissions, and the ¥40 billion milestone is only days away now. 30 days until the home video release (as of Sunday) now!

The Father (except for its 3-day total) and Remnants in Twilight are estimated. The Father sold 13,019 admissions over its first three-days in release.

Pretty decent weekend, the best since Golden Week ended.

A Morning Farewell, based on the novel by Kyoko Minami, debuted atop the weekend box office, selling 135,000 admissions across 299 screens, and 161,132 admissions over its first three-days of release. This is a pretty good start, and with normal legs it should be able to reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone for Toei.

Beautiful Lure - A Tale of "Painted Skin" "surprised" again this weekend by coming in second place (looked like a distant fourth this weekend, just as it looked like a distant third last weekend) with a great hold, selling an additional 88,343 admissions in its sophomore frame to reach a two-week total of 289,087 admissions. I would have expected some frontloading, but the strong reviews came through for it.

Hell's Garden barely missed second place, selling 87,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 259 screens, and reached 111,961 admissions over it first three-days in release. This likely isn't enough to reach the ¥1 billion milestone, so I'd expect a total around ¥750 million ($7 million) for now.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final barely missed third place, and second place, in its fifth weekend of release. The very impressive holds continue for the film, and it exceeded 2 million admissions after 31 days in release. I expect the strong holds to continue at least until part two, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning opens on June 4th, however, I also wouldn't be surprised if it continues to have good legs afterwards as business appears to be being stretched out a lot more than usual right now due to the SOEs in effect. Expect a total north of ¥3.5 billion (~$35 million) and over 2.5 million admissions.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet rounds out the Top 5 with a solid hold. After six weeks in release, the 24th Detective Conan film has sold over 4.5 million admissions. I don't want to make a final prediction here still since I am expecting Toho to do something for it once the SOEs are lifted in Tokyo and Osaka, but if nothing special is announced, look for a total around ¥7 billion ($65 million) and a bit over 5 million admissions.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time sees a hefty decline, but it's also coming off a near 70% increase last weekend due to a mini-poster giveaway that boosted it. The likelihood of it remaining the highest grossing film of 2021 have gone way, way up in recent weeks as Detective Conan has been impacted by the SOEs and nothing on paper for the rest of the year is likely to challenge it. We'll see if it receives any other events to further boost its total a bit, but for the time being, expect a total around ¥8.7 billion ($80 million) and 5.7 million admissions.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train keeps on keeping on, delivering a strong hold in its 32nd weekend of release, and in the process, became the first film to ever reach the ¥40 billion milestone, now just ¥387 million away from outgrossing the previous #1 film of all-time, Spirited Away, by a totally ridiculous ¥10 billion (minus re-releases). Its 220-day admissions are up to 28,966,806.

After six weeks in release, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final claims the #1 spot at the weekend box-office after falling short over its first five weekends. This is Warner Bros. first film to rank #1 at the weekend box office since Tenet back in September. Part one of the finale has continued to have absolutely incredible holds on the weekdays and weekends alike now, and has outgrossed the original film in the 5-film saga. Its 38-day admissions have reached an impressive 2,260,298, and it should easily clear 2.5 million admissions. Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning, part two of the finale, opens this upcoming weekend.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet finally had a weekend hold that it's been really needing for a few weeks now, and with theaters in Tokyo and Osaka (among others) reopened beginning this week, let's see if it can recoup some of its lost earrings in the major prefectures over the upcoming weekends. After six-weeks of release, it has sold 4,703,967 admissions.

Cruella is a huge bomb as expected from multiple theater chains boycotting Disney releases, most notably Toho Cinemas (the busiest chain in the country). It was given a four-day release, presumably due to its annoying same-day Disney+ release, and only sold 63,948 admissions after its first four-days in release. Look for a finish around ¥300 million (~$3 million). Disney obviously isn't hurting for money, but at this point, I wonder if they're actually making a profit from theatrical earnings in Japan right now.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train finally falls outside the Top 10 in its 33rd week of release (second highest ever), and just barely at that. After 33 weeks in release, its admissions are now up to 28,994,796. I'll continue to track its weekend grosses for as long as they're available, but I'd only expect one, maybe two more at the most. The biggest film of all-time's run is quickly approaching its conclusion now, so look for a projected final gross in the coming weeks.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning debuted atop the box office, selling 247,600 admissions over the weekend frame across 449 screens, and 350,199 admissions over its first three-days in release. This is about 30% less than The Final, but if you've read many of my last posts, it's very likely due to a high number of fans who haven't had the opportunity to see part one yet due to the SOEs that affected most of its run over its first six weeks. If The Beginning displays strong legs early on, we can likely determine this to be the case.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final held onto second place with another crazy strong hold that's become the norm for it in recent weeks, and in doing so, marks the first time ever that both parts of a two-part finale have occupied the Top 2 spots at the weekend box-office! Despite the SOEs affecting it almost immediately out of the gate (day 3) and over its first six weeks in release, it has displayed very good legs and is probably going to finish around ¥4 billion ($36 million or so).

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet enjoyed a nice increase to round out the Top 3, a much needed increase it's been waiting for as theaters in Tokyo/Osaka (among others) have reopened (though under capacity restrictions). It looked like it may have finished just slightly above ¥7 billion, but I expect it'll have a pretty long run now with theaters reopened and summer vacation a little over a month away. We'll need to see how it performs in the next few weeks, but this weekend is a good sign that it could be targeting ¥7.5 billion (about $70 million) or more.

Kakegurui: Desperate Russian Roulette's weekend figure remains an estimate, and I didn't realize it actually opened on Tuesday as soon as theaters reopened in Tokyo/Osaka (among others), so its cumulative total above is a 6-day total, and it's sold 88,194 admissions since then.

Fate/Grand Order: Paladin; Agateram experienced a massive increase, either due to theaters reopening in Tokyo/Osaka (where a film like this makes the vast majority of its sales) or Aniplex giving it a event over the weekend with theaters reopened now. Or perhaps it was a result of both. Either way, it was enough to keep it in the Top 10 for another week.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train dropped to either 14th or 15th place, depending on the weekend actual for the 2gether movie. Its 34 week admissions have reached 29,019,995. Unless there's an interest among the most diehard of fans to check it out in theaters ahead of the home video release on June 16th (so close now!), this will probably be its last weekend that's tracked.

Looking at the films at the top six right now, you'd think this was the 1990s! Five of the top 6 films right now (Gundam, Evangelion, Detecitve Conan, and Rurouni Kenshin x2) are 80s/90s properties.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway debuts atop the box-office in a big way, selling 165,000 admissions over the weekend frame on just 215 screens, and 259,074 admissions since Friday. That gave it an average ticket price of ¥2,004 ($18.26) over the weekend and ¥2,022 ($18.42) after its first three-days. That's almost 50% higher than the national average, and about 25% higher than a typical premium format release. Also, this is the biggest opening weekend ever for a Gundam film, and it's going to become the highest grossing film in the series in just a few days from now. Pretty incredible start.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time experienced a truly massive increase to rise back into the top 10, and it even ranked #1 in admissions over the weekend by selling 169,296 admissions. Why? Because of a major giveaway event marketed as the farewell/good-bye for both the film and Evangelion series. And Evangelion fans came out, and continue to do so this week (as of Monday), as they always do. The fans for this series are perhaps the most loyal and diehard of any domestic or foreign franchise in history. It'll be leaving theaters over the next few weeks (beginning with a 72% drop this upcoming weekend), but it's making its presence felt this week in true farewell fashion.

Character enjoyed a solid debut in fourth place, selling 133,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 319 screens, and 181,255 admissions since Friday. This should be good enough to get it to the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, a respectable figure for a June release.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning rounds out the Top 3, seeing a fair hold by selling an additional 167,000 admissions over the weekend. I was expecting a better hold here, but Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final is still holding very well (seems possible for it to actually reach ¥4 billion now), meaning that a decent number of fans still haven't caught in in theaters yet, therefore the second part is only attracting the fans that have seen part one still. I'm expecting part one to eventually see a fairly sudden decline as fans come out to see it before seeing part two, and when/if that happens, part two will probably begin to show its legs.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet held well in its ninth-weekend of release, and surpassed Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter to become the third highest grossing film in the long-running franchise. It's also less than 50,000 admissions away from reaching 5 million admissions now, too. It should continue to see good/great holds for awhile.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is nearing its end, falling outside the Top 25 films now, so its weekend grosses won't be reported any longer. However, its total continues to be reported, thankfully, and it's up to ¥40,127,186,250 ($383.5 million) and 29,040,541 admissions after thirty-five weeks of release. Its losing more theaters this upcoming Friday, so this could be the last update it receives. The home video release is on TUESDAY! Crazy to think it's 2 days, or 1 day technically, away.
